Mom Refuses To Accommodate Anti-Vax Sister’s Kids By Excluding Her Own “Sick” Son From Wedding

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to protect against dangerous diseases, saving millions of lives each year.

But not everyone trusts them.

This was the case for one woman, who not only rejects vaccines but also believes her nephew’s allergies are contagious. Convinced they could harm her unvaccinated kids, she insisted he stay home during the upcoming family wedding.

However, the boy’s mom refused, and the situation spiraled into a heated drama. Read all about it below.

Not vaccinating your children can have serious consequences

A survey from the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania revealed that the number of adults who don’t think vaccines are safe is on the rise. The OP’s sister is part of this growing group, and these increasing rates can lead to serious risks for everyone.

According to UNICEF, when children don’t get vaccinated on time, they face a higher chance of contracting diseases like hepatitis, tuberculosis, whooping cough, and diphtheria. Even illnesses like measles, which are preventable with vaccines, can cause dangerous complications.

Those who are unvaccinated are also more likely to make other, more vulnerable people sick. For instance, adults are often the ones who unknowingly spread whooping cough to infants—and for babies, it can be deadly. Pregnant women who contract rubella are at high risk of giving birth to children with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which can cause lifelong health issues. Similarly, pregnant women who catch measles face a higher chance of miscarriage.

As a result of having fully vaccinated populations, fewer people get sick, which means more people can enjoy healthier, longer lives. Take West Papua as an example—between 2010 and 2017, life expectancy rose significantly, thanks in large part to more children receiving their vaccines on time. By staying informed about vaccinations, we can all contribute to a safer and healthier world.

For more details, visit the WHO website.

F**k. That. B***h! I grew up having my medical needs ignored because of my evangelical mother. I've had major injuries, even life threatening ones utterly ignored in favor of prayer. Imagine being a 12 year old and almost bleeding out, with a beach towel soaked in blood and not getting help because your mom was "healing" you by speaking in tongues! I had fractures, torn muscles and damaged tendons ignored because I "just needed to pray on it". I've been suicidality depressed and told I just need more prayer. This woman is abusing her kids and should be forcibly sterilized before she can hurt more innocent children. Remove her from your life, because you will never, ever get through to her. Believe me, I speak from experience. Thank God (ironic) I never came out as a teenager, or I would be DEAD because of the hatemongering of evangelical Christians.

The commenter who noted that these types are so judgemental unless they need money is so accurate. My brother and SIL were evangelicals and she did her best to ignore us. He became very ill, mum and dad were constantly helping in one way or another to get them through, my sister and i too. She was constantly making a point of how "blessed by God" they were that they got all this help aka. It was not us, it was God. My brother died and my own parents, me and my sister were not welcome in the front row or the receiving line for condolences. All the congregation except 2 women ignored us at my own brothers funeral and she ensured we were not allowed to contribute to the headstone plaque which does not acknowledge him as a beloved son and brother. It still makes me want to scream 12 years later.

Ah, the good ol’ anti-vaxxers. I couldn’t give a flying fig about what happens to them, but I know whooping cough is on the rise where I live because of these morons and if an innocent baby dies because old mate over there thinks vaxxes are the devil, I’d be making hell for them (no pun intended). I know there are many people in the world and that is a reason some people don't want kids. But in order to counter the numbers of "dumb" people, "smart" children should be raised as well. I still haven't seen the movie Idiocracy but real life sounds more and more like we are going there. I hope more "smart" people have children who can rise up and rule countries wisely. Yes the children are the future, so if we want the world to keep existing, smart people should have more children tbh. And raise them well. So I fear for that outbreeding plan, as it is a very effective one. And the smart people just don't seem to be able to stop that plan or join in it.

Your niece has spoken, so that should be that. Unfortunately, it seems that it isn't due to your brother. This meal will be held at your brother's house, and he has the right to decide who does or doesn't come to it. But you definitely need to let him know that if you honor his wishes, your entire family will not be attending the meal and that this request will change your relationship with him. As for the wedding, everyone go and enjoy yourselves.

I predict at least some of Karen’s kids will run to the nearest clinic for a full round of vaccinations the millisecond they turn 18—if they live that long—-and their cray-cray mama can’t do a damned thing about it. Because the grown kids of anti-vaxx idiots like her seem to be doing that in droves. I hope the rest of the family is making sure the kids know they have a safe haven with them when they decide to GTFO of mama’s crazy house and live normal lives (after a bit of catching up because of the educational deficiencies caused by mama’s home “schooling”).

I'm sorry but there's no way her children are being taken care of properly in that kind of situation, I would have already called DHS. You cannot have eight children in the house and properly be able to homeschool them with one grown up, who has not been trained to be a teacher.

Go since it's what the bride wants and ignore the brother (he wants to be the good guy to everyone, can't be done). The sister does this because she wants control and if you allow her to get her way it will get worse. Besides, she's doing it wrong - she's supposed to expose her kids to these diseases and give them natural immunity, am I right? 👍

So the brother wants OP to keep the peace by giving in and excluding her son, but it sounds like be failed. Either the lunatic sister will be upset or OP will be. Either way, they will interact at the wedding or reception. Fisticuffs will happen. The brother/father of the bride needs to let his daughter decide, but she must decide and inform everyone of her decision, and the battling sisters need to respect that decision. OP is bringing a lot of baggage into this which is obvious from her descriptions here. Both need to respect the bride and whoever "wins" can't gloat or even mention this or any other conflict to anyone at the wedding.

Our family has a safe word. When you have enough of a conversation or you don't want to discuss it or whatever or any other time you just want to say "shut the F up" and not be rude. Just invoke the safe word. Our word is avocado. Invite whomever, and expect them all to be adults or they can make their own decisions on whether to come or not come. It's a family thing, all family should be there. And when whomever wants to b***h, when they start, just say the safe word.. then change the subject. Avocado. Did you see the sunset last night?

IMPO, religion was created by powerful men to control the rest of us, considering the amount of Deities that have peppered Human history. This is a perfect example of how it can distort people's perspectives. I know that many will disagree, and everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and that's fine, as it is just MY opinion.

Well, this is very a-typical for parents who don´t get their children vaccinated. They are usually very much aware of how the immune system works and what specific diseases look like (to be able to get the proper treatment early, to avoid infecting others). So if it is true at all, the sister has other issues. She just is a mean person with main character syndrome. She was like that before she became religious and she will be like that when she ceases to be religious because she discovers something that makes her even moe "different and interesting". And may I just add that Christianity is not opposed to medicine. Rejecting specific treatments for specific reasons is one thing, rejecting any treatment whatsoever is putting God to the test. Some people will do that, but some people just are lunatics regardless of their religious beliefs or non-beliefs.

I think you are unaware of how many antivax people exist. And i dont mean the ones who can't vax because of their kids immune system issues. But antivax people. People who actively choose to not vaccinate because either "it's just a normal sickness and no one ever dies of (insert possibly de-dly disease that has klld)" or "modern science is all a lie the devil made up" and sadly the second is becoming more and more popular.

Except that it resonates with a lot of people's own lived experience. It sounds fake until you've lived it. The other things is that those 'buzz words' are a great shortcut for communication. That's why we use them. It'd be hard to describe that kind of relative (I have one) without using them.

Fake. Not one "fundamentalist: Christian Church rejects modern medicine. A lot of individual vaccine skeptics? Hell yeah. But all modern medicine? Some kooks have come to that conclusion from Christian Science, but that denomination is actually very *liberal* and often not even discernably Christian anymore. (They have "reading rooms" instead of any organized ritual, and no required belief in God at all.) Some (a small minority) of Amish and related communities reject modern medicine, but the rest of the story doesn't fit them being Amish, of course.

Yes, it's her dad who is the a-hole for insisting that everyone else caters to his anti-vax sister to keep the peace. She isn't being excluded, she's been invited, made an unreasonable request, and that request was denied - ball is in her court, she can come or not come.
