Many of us genuinely care about the impact we have on the people closest to us, as well as society and the environment as a whole. Your decisions, actions, and spending habits—though just drops in the ocean—can have an impact on your surroundings. One thing to look at is your relationship with buying and consuming products.

The ‘Anticonsumption’ community is a popular online community that criticizes consumer culture while also encouraging everyone to be more environmentally conscious. Today, we’re featuring some of their members’ most popular posts to potentially inspire you to rethink how and why you spend money.

Bored Panda reached out to Matt Johnson, PhD, a marketing psychology expert specializing in topics such as consumer psychology and serendipity, for his thoughts on how consumers can convince companies to be more eco-friendly, as well as why sustainability may be good for brands. "Sustainability isn’t just good ethics—it’s good business," he told us. Read on for our full interview with Johnson.

I would hit that button 30 times before they got the sentence out.

The amount of poorly utilized resources and general waste we’re surrounded by is shocking. Statista reports that a jaw-dropping 2+ billion tons of municipal solid waste is generated around the world each year. This number is likely to grow by around 70% by the year 2050.

Humankind also generates over 350 million metric tons of plastic waste per year, the amount of which is set to triple by the year 2060. The core issue is that the average lifespan of a plastic product is around a decade, but some plastics can take hundreds of years to decompose.

With so many people going hungry in the world, food waste is a particularly painful topic. In 2022, the world produced around 1.05 billion tons of food waste. This comes out to around 132 kilograms of food waste per capita; 79 kilograms of this was household waste.

Around a trillion dollars worth of food is thrown away each year. Food waste takes up around 30% of agricultural land around the world and generates between 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

This 'minority' word, interestingly, it's being described for demographics that are becoming the majority. We have, in my city at least, a heavy population of Filipinos and East Indians, I would say they are the majority demographic, now. (Nothing wrong with that.btw.) There are actually way more "minorities" than what is perceived as the "majorities" is what I'm trying to say. Diversity is here, and I don't think it needs to be pushed anymore than it is. If anything, we need to protect diversity for the sake of equity, and update our long-outdated terminology. - I really went down a rabbit hole.

That is the US version of capitalism. Other countries have capitalism AND universal healthcare; taxes are used for education, infrastructure and healthcare, not a bloated defense department that overpays weapons manufacturers. It can work, but it takes political will and a better-informed public. (It used to work better in the US, too).

I'm afraid that blaming only capitalism for all that is shortsighted. Communist China is the most polluting country in the world. Socialist Europe abused and keeps abusing their former colonies like leeches. And I wonder why on earth a young man is wearing a pearl necklace, which is a symbol of affluence.

The World Food Programme states that a fifth of all food produced for human consumption around the world is wasted. That’s around a billion meals thrown out the window every single day. Food waste is more common in hot climates because food spoils faster as it’s stored, processed, and transported.

The majority of food waste happens at the household level: we’re responsible for around 60% of this waste. So, all of us can realistically reduce this waste on a very individual level.

According to Johnson, consumers have more power than they think. "Every purchase is a vote, and collectively, those votes shape corporate behavior," the marketing psychology expert told Bored Panda via email. He explained that when enough people demand sustainability—whether by choosing brands with eco-friendly practices, calling out greenwashing, or supporting regulatory changes—change happens.

"Companies take notice when, and only when, they have to. The key to applying this pressure is consistency: businesses don’t just respond to trends; they respond to sustained shifts in consumer behavior. If waste reduction and sustainability become market expectations rather than niche preferences, corporations will follow," he said.

"After all, companies don’t change out of goodwill—they change because consumer demand makes it profitable. The more visible and vocal consumers are, the faster that shift happens."

We were curious what the upsides of more sustainable business practices might be for companies. Johnson noted that sustainability is good business, not just good ethics.

"Consumers are increasingly aligning their spending with their values, and brands that embrace sustainability can build stronger customer loyalty, enhance brand reputation, and differentiate themselves in a crowded market. Eco-conscious companies also future-proof themselves against regulatory shifts and resource scarcity, making them more resilient in the long run," he told Bored Panda.

"Moreover, sustainability can drive innovation, leading to cost savings and new revenue streams. In today’s market, being green isn’t just a selling point—it’s becoming an expectation. Brands that ignore this shift risk becoming obsolete as consumer and investor priorities evolve."

The son's reaction may depend on whether he's, say, 41 or 14.

You can get a sense of the type of relationship people have with consumption by looking at their debt. For example, credit card debt reached $1.17 trillion in the United States in the third quarter of 2024, up from $770 billion in the first quarter of 2021. Low-income Americans are more likely to use various loans (for example, buy now, pay later payday, pawn shop, etc.). The average annual interest rates of payday loans, for instance, stand at 400%. This is unsustainable and traps people in a loop of taking on more debt to pay old debt.

This isn’t to say that money, the economy, or buying and selling things are inherently ‘evil’ or anything like that. Balancing the short-term needs of humankind and the long-term needs of the environment and future generations is hard, yes, but it’s theoretically possible. There’s no such thing as a constantly growing global economy. But eco-conscious, sustainable growth isn’t a bad thing. After all, people need food, a place to live, medicine, entertainment, art, and various goods and services. Civilization is far too advanced for everyone to suddenly embrace a tribal lifestyle with limited to no trade.

Job security, purposeful work, good wages, career opportunities, health insurance, and social programs can provide you with safety and stability. And you can use the money you earn for good food, quality leisure activities with the people you care about, education for your kids, etc. But the way you spend your hard-earned cash should be reflective of something deeper than just trying to ride that dopamine high that comes from shopping addiction.

BS! Only true if you only use a bike, and never buy off Amazon, or use the internet. Those companies are only big because of us the consumers.

According to the Addiction Center, people suffering from shopping addiction often compulsively spend lots of money and time buying things they either might not need or simply cannot afford. An example of this is buying luxury goods with money that you’d otherwise use for rent.

Shopping addicts tend to experience things very emotionally, feeling euphoria or excitement when they shop, as well as regret or guilt. These addicts may lie about their habits, feel like they’ve lost control, and have let their financial habits negatively impact their lives.

AI can be fantastic, if used for tasks that humans cannot accomplish. For instance, ML models can be used to improve the efficiency of machines by making micro adjustments far faster than a human could make. In a factory setting, this could save energy and carbon, and reduce waste. These models give existing workers better tools, rather than replacing them. But the AI companies that get the investments are the ones that are replacing humans for creative tasks.

The Marketing team At a nearby casino attempted to use AI for a giveaway summer of 2024 and it failed spectacularly. They had a rooster holding a tray of prizes in it's claw/foot but had also made the leg part as it's shoulder and arm based on where it was attached to the rooster's body. It made the rooster look like it was holding the tray with its foot. The other "arm/wing" was developed to look like a wing with a feathered hand holding a spatula and the rooster was placed in front if a Bbq grill.

Most companies are creating stupid implementations of AI. I listed something on eBay, "create the listing using AI". I want to do a post on LinkedIN, "create your post with AI". These AI prompts suck. The AIs aren't replacing humans for creative tasks. They are reducing the technical skill required to perform digital creative tasks. Using ChatGPT, Claude and others directly is AMAZING. I'm automating my AI-generated video channel now. Me, Claude, ChatGPT, python, and some sh scripts. I've done months of development work in 2 days and have been creating beautiful and amazingly creative videos. (Seeking Gamma on YouTube) Learn some python and learn some prompt engineering! The jobs being replaced are boring infoslave jobs. Soon you'll be able to create a Hollywood level script and movie if you can describe and edit a story with AI.

I own a pair of newish skis, a pair of hand-me-down boots and just grab one of the many pairs of used poles from the garage as needed. I wear the ski jacket and pants I've had for 25 years and whatever pajamas fit under it as long johns and whatever hoodie/sweater/second pair of pants first if it's extra cold. My helmet was a present five years ago and my gloves I think I've had since I was literally 15. I can't imagine what the tubes and bottle sare in the 1952 image let alone the 2019 one. I take a sunscreen and a chapstick. If I need my skis waxed I've gotten that done at the beginning of the season by a professional. I literally can't think of any other liquids, creams, or chemicals typically associated with akiing. I honestly think whoever drew this doesn't know much about skiing and just assumes some weird consumerist sport which is weird because most of us are what you call 'ski bums.'

Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz, the authors of ‘The Good Life,’ explain that prestige at work and having lots of money doesn’t make someone happier. That being said, money can still give you security, safety, and a sense of control over your life. Your relationships matter the most.

This sentiment is partly echoed by researcher Matt A. Killingsworth from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Though he argues that the more money someone has, the happier they are, this ultimately may come down to having more freedom and control to live your life the way you want to. In short, it’s not (just) about being able to buy more stuff.

I expect that there will be a "sale" in April telling me that the normal price is "30% off" Then it will go back to normal price in May or June. I also find it interesting that the 3 major retailers for it all have the exact same price, and the price increase across all 3 is in perfect lock step. Hmmm.....

That mushrooming on the head is dangerous. Either grind it down, or get a new one. For those curious, mushrooming like that can cause stress fractures in the metal that's mushroomed out. Hit it hard enough on something, say if you miss what you're aiming at and hit metal, yes even wood, or concrete, and you run the very real risk of that mushroomed part breaking free and becoming flying shrapnel.

Fun fact: 99% of paper produced today comes from tree farms. Tree farms are a net carbon sink, and would be even better if the harvesting and transporting process doesn't use carbon producing systems. The average tree farm takes six to ten years before being ready to harvest. Seeing people post these "more trees" things... really tells me someone doesn't understand that the majority of paper used today, comes from a rather easily renewable resource.

It's astonishing how many toys are made with plastic. They are not any cheaper than wooden toys. It's just that wooden toys are viewed as higher quality, more durable and thus feeling more expensive to buy. Thrift shops and antique shops are still an option, too. Kids don't need hyped up movie and show characters on every object. It would be interesting to see if there is a link between imagination and expanded interests in kids given toys with no licensed designs vs. kids given toys with licensed designs, and how that affects them growing up.

I went on a trip to a dairy farm a while back. They explained the environmental costs involved in plastic vrs glass milk bottles. Counter intuitively, the plastic had a much lower impact. They used a type of plastic which can be recycled multiple times, got rid of labels and coloured tops which made recycling harder. Because it is a local only supplier, and our city has a forward thinking recycling centre working hard to help the environment (that was a good trip too) they can recycle from their own cartons efficiently. The life of that plastic has a lower impact than producing a glass bottle. Add on the amount of energy sterilising the glass, plus the fact the smallest chip makes them need recycling - a high energy production - and then factor in the huge fuel increase needed to transport the heavier glass. When the plastic is coming close to it's end due to multiple recycling, it is used in building materials by the recycling/energy plant. It surprised me to learn this.

You should not even recycle plastic if you care about the ocean, the stuff is mostly worthless and there is nothing you can re purpose it for that is worth much, so recycling centers take the plastic that people wish cycle and send it to China, China pays for other smaller nations to get rid of it, so they dump it in the ocean. Much more environmentally friendly to just put the plastic in the trash so it will just sit in a landfill and generally not interact with the environment.

Glass might be unlimited, but local recycle centers will no longer accept glass from the community because they have "too much". We are literally told to put it in the garbage.

the maximum emptying interval of the cup is 12 hours and the size of the cup is chosen based on the amount of menstrual flow. You can also feel it when the cup is too full through experience. I've had to empty the cup into the toilet bowl and wash the cup in the public restroom at the hand-washing station and in the swimming hall, and I do it with zero shame. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do, and if others are disgusted, that's their shame, not mine. I always clean carefully because no one wants to see blood stains and I'm not a messy person.

Soooo Pandas...this is how you attempt to remove womens choices for personal hygiene by pretending it's the environmentally friendly option. This is like trying to make men stop using condoms because the material bad for the environment. They got us all buying f*****g plastic bags in the UK for 30p to encourage us to use one "Bag for Life"...which very few people do... but the supermarkets now get to charge 30p for a bag that cots 3p to make and most people still buy them every time they shop. I had a different take. I'm a gal, use a cup and am glad it's more environmentally friendly. I don't try to force this choice on anyone else and I don't think this post is either, just providing an option. And the truth is menstrual cups are safer for the environment. Menstrual cups can be used for up to 10 years. Disposable pads are single use and most have super absorbant polymers (SAPs) that don't decompose, they just degrade into microplastics (and we all know the hazards). It's still a choice and people are free to make it, they just should be aware of how it impacts the environment.: https://www.icliniq.com/articles/womens-health/menstrual-cups-or-pads

I had a pan that became well-seasoned after a few uses. My mom asks "What happened to your pan?" Very annoying type of condescending question. I told her it was seasoned. Apparently I'm supposed to get rid of it. I only got rid of it after we discovered the pest problem in my old place got in under the oven, where we kept the baking sheets.

The "or when" timeline makes more sense. I have had baking pans for decades that still aren't rusted or warped.. and knives even older that can still be sharpened. Even my dishcloths last forever. How poorly are these people treating the cheap products they bought?!

I had a wooden cutting board that was over ten years old. When the surface looked worn I sanded it (I don't have a planer). and treated with paraffin oil. I recently gave it up as it started to crack deeper and would soon have split in two. Cutting boards can be made to last by regular cleaning and oiling. I do the same for wooden kitchen utensils. I would throw away the plastic cutting board and on this list I only agree with plastic food storage containers where the food is in direct contact with the plastic and with the kitchen brush and sponge.

The non-stick pans start to flake, and are probrably necessary to replace, but see if you can substitute enamel, ceramic or cast iron as it comes time to replace. For wooden cutting boards, plane or sand them smooth again, re-wax, and they're good to go. You can also re-hem your towels when they fray, or cut them down into rags.

I could imagine that this is why people responded to positively. Just for ONCE it was the "upper class" that suffered, instead of those at the bottom. Was it right? No. Is it right that the weakest in society are being kicked in the nuts all the time? Also no. If anything, it shows why equality is important not just for those at the bottom.

Fun Fact Pandas: Timpsons in the UK is a shoe repairer and does key cutting and watch batteries...The majority of their staff are ex prisoners who are trying to make a life after prison. Timpsons employ more ex prisoners than any other company in the UK.

You can replace the batteries - however, the phone manufacturers have purposely designed the phone so that it is difficult to replace them. I hope that they fix the laws on right to repair and soon.

I had the best wallet for over a decade. I would have kept it forever, but my dog ate it when he was a puppy. Now I have one similar and it's been 6 years. I'll try to keep it forever.

You can absolutely make overnight oats yourself. Oats, milk, fruit, whatever, in a glass container, into the fridge before bed, you've got oatmeal ready when you get up. It's wonderful. What is this c**p?

Had to live with my daughter after I was fired from my Nestle' job. I worked in a town 45 miles away, so stayed there most of the week. Bought a towel at Meijer. 20 years later, still using it, still serviceable. Wife asked the other day when 'we' got it, she was stunned.

There are products like Fray Check and some others, you can put that along the edges of your towels to keep them from unraveling. The edges sometimes get a bit stiff, depending on the product you use, but you get more use out of the towel.

Washing fabrics was never about 'killing' bacteria, just removing the stuff they feed on (and leave behind them). Decent quality towels will last for years.
