Anorexic Celebrities: Artists Photoshop Celebrity Bodies To Spread Awareness About Anorexia
The worth1000 sites (closed in January) and Freaking News make photo editing contests and always with social awareness-raising issues related to popular celebrities.
I selected some images of a contest, where the theme was celebrity weight loss. "Let us help prevent eating disorders from spreading among celebrities and politicians, by showing them what they would look like if they were anorexic"- wrote Freaking News in the description of the competition. And we do agree with their message, as beauty standards and body image understanding seem to be going more and more unrealistic each year.
The anorexic models created for the contest were shocking yet amazing.

She doesnt look like that cause of starving herself! I hope you know she had a double mastectomy and then breast reconstruction done cause of cancer threat? It is not a very pleasant experience I am sure.

Ummm... This is not at all how to stop the spread of anorexia and actually shows that the person who did this does not understand the mental state at all. It is not a desire to "look good" generally, but is along the lines of extreme self-harm, and emaciated images feed the disease by giving something to fixate on and aim for, speaking from experience as someone who struggled nearly to death with an eating disorder. Such a disturbing approach, and I hope you remove this article and that the artist reconsiders based on these comments from those who understand a little more about this issue.

And besides, photo manipulation is of great interest for me, I find it very difficult in terms of photo editing. obviously these edits were made by guy, cuz boobs are still there and that's not how it works - boobs are basically fat, so there's not much left of it in anorexic people

They do, if they do it long enough. My friend, who died after 20 years of this, looked exactly like that, only her limbs weren't quite that long and her face looked like a mummy's - with the shape of her teeth showing through the super tight skin on her face. Anorexia is only pretty while the sufferers are under 25. It smells viscous, too, btw, like a rotting corpse - sweet and sickly. The thinspo pics never show how a person smells whose body devours itself. It means an unhappy life ending in a horrible death. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I have never commented on Bored Panda, but I feel the need to on this one. For as major of a problem anorexia is, I believe it is incredibly underestimated in how in manifests. Vanity is often not the key motivator for many people, just one of the ways in which the disorder manifests. There are incredible biological predispositions at work in those with anorexia. Check out The Atlantic's "The Challenge of Treating Anorexia in Adults." I feel that posting these "deterrent" photos severely reduces the complexity of those suffering from anorexia and, if anything, just piles on more crippling guilt (See? This is ugly. Why can't you just eat?).

I agree, like with bulimia or morbid obesity, these eating disorders are a manifestation of larger issues. These photos are like tell a person with depression they looked better when they smile.

Dear me. That shows perfectly society's view on anorexia. These photoshop ladies are skeletons with an estimated life time of 4 weeks. Anorexia starts lots earlier, and most of all it starts in your brain. These pictures suggest that this diaease is a problem of the body, when it's really a problem of mind. Do you have some friend who wants to lose weight without being able to say, wich weight is her/ his aim? Do you have some friend who's overambitious and always willing to give his best, no matter how tired she/ he is? Even if she/ he looks perfectly normal: THAT's the point, you should have close but friendly look at her. If she looks like in these pics, game is nearly over.

This is horrendous. What right do you have to violate another person's body without their permission? This isn't spreading awareness. This is shaming women to prove a point?! Most of whom are perfectly healthy. I do not support Anorexia but this s****y project missed the point.

I generally don't comment on things like this, but this made me particularly angry. Most people suffering anorexia nervosa die at a relatively normal weight. You only have to be 15% under "ideal" body weight for diagnosis. To put that in perspective, a 25-year-old female of average height (5' 4") only needs to be 110-120 pounds to be "under ideal weight" (depending on which ideal weight calculator you use). This is NOT to say that anyone who is 120 pounds at 5' 4" is anorexic, but rather to put it in perspective how anorexia does not necessarily mean looking like a skeleton. Most sufferers do NOT look like this, which is exactly why they struggle to be taken seriously and get help - society perpetuates this idea that anorexia means being 80 pounds with every rib visible. This also allows many sufferers to tell themselves that they "aren't that sick". Far more harm than good comes from this.

Could people stop sharing these pictures already? Reposting these just makes them more available for pro-ana sites to copy and paste onto their pages as "thinspo". Even though they're fake, many people with eating disorders still idolize these images and look to them as proof they need to lose more. Maybe they were taken down in the first place for a reason?
