Nowadays, advertisements surround us from every direction. We are constantly encouraged to purchase items we would never have considered needing. A simple online search on our mobile devices triggers an avalanche of offers and eye-catching images that eventually persuade us to make unnecessary purchases, whether they be gadgets, clothing, or accessories.
The 'AntiConsumption' online community fights against consumerism, one post at a time. Its members share insightful content that inspires us to change our habits and reduce the accumulation of goods simply because they were suggested, rather than because we genuinely need them.

Why Have I Never Seen Anything Like This?
If you have a garden you can keep a potted tree that you display each year. My mum does this with a small blue spruce which goes out on the front doorstep at Christmas time, and my husband and I have a little Norwegian fir on our balcony who comes inside to get dressed up
Load More Replies...I love the fact that the tree has a gender, lol! You go mate! Get replanted next Christmas. And the one after. You awesome pine needle fella you!
I'd be surprised if a tree this size could survive this transplanting. It's root structure will have been damaged severely. Worth a shot though I guess.
What's Yours?
As a web developer, I wholeheartedly agree to the first one. It's a website, let it work on a web browser. Don't ask me to open or try an app. I know the app exists and I don't care.
And that "it's better on the app!" message does not mean it's better for you.
Load More Replies...OMG. I bought Windows 11, and it's full of ads. Microsoft ads. I am never going to use my PC for Xbox gaming. Why can't I delete that stuff. Or better yet... Have the option to not install it in the first place? I paid for Office, too (the downloaded version, not the subscription online), and tested out the new version of Outlook when prompted to try it. It has ads in it. I switched back to the last year's version, and when asked for feedback, I gave it. I can't stand constantly being sold to. Just no. Stop. I want to get off.
Thank you, I was thinking about upgrading to 11 - I have yet to hear anything positive.

Yes! You Should Wear Stuff For Years
all of my shoes that i’ve worn till they’re literally falling apart: hi 🫠
Load More Replies...Some of my clothes have been in my wardrobe for a decade. As long as it fits, both size and personal style wise, I'm happy with it. Otherwise it goes to donations.
Those babies were put together back then. Clothing (and other items) were made to last, be repaired, and go on some more.
Load More Replies...Completely agree. I have a summer jacket I bought in 2005. Still looks great. Helps if you do a good job looking after them.
I have stuff from as far back as the mid-nineties.
Load More Replies...My ex had a bunch of t-shirts with massive holes in them, I mean really massive, so I took them away, cut them into strips, and made a couple of rugs.
Load More Replies...Yup! I had a leather jacket (second hand) and wore it till it literally fell apart. Over the 20ish years I had it I cleaned it and repaired it until it was more repairs than original. Had to eventually put it out of its misery - the lining, padding and stitching were destroyed. Ended up using the leather to make sheaths for some of knives.
I've almost finished replacing my whole wardrobe with higher-quality classic pieces that I'm going to wear for decades. No more cheap polyester "fashion" items for me!
This is the goal! I need to start doing this as well! Do you have any recommendations on brands?
Load More Replies...I wear my stuff out until it doesn't fit, or my style changes in like 4 years (by then it will probably by too small or too big) so yeah! I'll wear the same shirt for 3 times a week, who can stop me?
You should buy good stuff, according to what you can afford but good, and wear it until it doesn't look ok. I mean, I'd rather have one good pair of warm winter boots then four pairs of rubbish, and I wear them several winters until they start to look "too worn". Sane with t-shirts and clothes in general, good quality lasts much longer. Also, if you look after your clothes, choosing the right program in the washing machine, using soft soap and separating light and dark colours they last longer in good shape.
The fashion industry is responsible for a very large fraction of the waste that we produce. They have a constant need for things to change, so they can sell more. But don't give into that scam that plays on group pressure. Instead you should be smart and realise that there are certain items that is evergreens (like a quality dress shirt, in a muted colour and with kind of simple pattern like stribes or a checkered pattern), of which you can build a wardrobe that can last for years, while you avoid the cheap fast fashion items.
In order to gain a better understanding of the psychological aspects of the consumerism issue that people face, we have reached out to a clinical psychologist based in the UK, Michaela Thomas. The founder of The Thomas Connection shared with us some insight based directly on her clinical experience.
We wanted to know if Thomas has encountered cases of compulsive or addictive consumption behaviors in her research or practice. We found out that: “Yes, I have clients in my clinic who can compulsively overspend or purchase items they don't need. It's important to understand the root cause behind this behavior, as it changes the treatment. If it is an acquisition behavior as part of hoarding, where someone collects more and more things, and at the same time struggles to let go of things they already have, even if they seem to serve no purpose to others, then that consumption builds up into other problems, like cluttering, unhygienic homes, and arguments with loved ones.”

By the same logic, you could say literature, music, art are about millionaire authors, musicians, artists, but you still don't have healthcare (this is the USA I assume); the commercialisation of sports, literature, the arts or anything else doesn't devalue those things and if you want a decent healthcare & education system, organize, campaign, demand, lobby, vote for them. I'm not a sporty person, but I do hate the widespread elitism and snobbery about sports that isn't directed at other fields.
Very very few "professional" writers, musicians, and artists are anywhere close to being millionaires. (There are also a lot of professional athletes who aren't rich, but we don't pay as much attention to those sports.) The bigger issue is that cities will bend over backwards to build new stadiums and the like for teams that will still move at the drop of a hat. Nobody is offering Stephen King 20 years of tax breaks for moving his writing desk.

So me and my skeleton (now named Oscar) on a stand on wheels covered in clear plastic were going on the train together at the busiest time of the day. I was all alone in the 4 seat square even though I wasn't blocking any of the other seats and the train was super packed. Still have to laugh about that 😁

Donating your body to science can be an interesting move. Sure, most bodys just get dissected at medical school, some are left to rot to study decomposition, occasionally they are used for weapon tests. But I also read about a guy who was a fan of ancient Egypt, and, by a combined team of surgeons, embalmers and egyptologists, was turned into a bona fide 18th dynasty mummy to better learn about the stages of mummification.

The psychologist told us about other, more complex instances: “If overspending is due to lack of financial planning, or wanting the dopamine kick of how good it feels to purchase something, that can be linked to ADHD, depression, mania, psychosis, or other dopamine-related issues. In ADHD, it can be really hard to resist sponsored content like Facebook ads or TV ads, telling you to get this thing NOW, in order to feel happier, or because otherwise there is a sense of FOMO, if you don't have this thing NOW.”

Gasoline to be fair. Do you have any idea how much CO2 is produced refining the metals needed for those batteries? And how many safety issues are associated with them?
Load More Replies...Amen. Although electric cars will at least mean better air quality in heavy traffic areas and fewer people suffering from respiratory problems. (Of course, children mining materials for the electric cars elsewhere is another health risk entirely.)
If you're referencing cobalt, this is actually used extensively in the production of petrol and there are now cobalt free batteries in some of the newer cars.

I mean... it's only bad if you don't like your job. I love my job and I'm pretty happy living my life this way.
I work 4 hours a week from September to May. And summers full blast at 12 -14 hours a day with no days off :) It's a choice and I like it.
The current norm for work schedules is relatively modern. Throughout most of the 1900s laborers and blue collar workers only had Sunday off, and generally worked 12 hour days. White collar and rich folks were either on a 5-day 40-hour schedule or worked even less, arriving at the office before noon and leaving 7 hours later. The advent of strong unions in the post-WWII era gave us what we consider a "normal" work week for the majority, 40 hours with 2 days off. Add in long commute times and a climate of longer hours=better employee and yes, this is life for many people. Just saying "I want to work less hours at this job and get paid more/the same" has never been a realistic goal, we will always need to find our own work/life balance, and then search for a job that allows you to achieve that.
it's the life GEN X was brainwashed into thinking it's normal. Thank you, dear Millenials and Gen Z-er for de-normalizing that toxic idea.
Seriously, tell me what you think life should be like. Is someone else supposed to grow your food, make your clothes, build your apartment, educate you, drive your bus? Is the toxic idea that you actually have to contribute something? In western countries people work on average less than half their lives. For that we get to live in generally safe environs, with clean water, healthy food and personal security.
Load More Replies...I literally told my friend today that I need a hobby. She asked "what do I like to do besides work?" My reply was "IDK cause all I do is work." This is unacceptable. Why is life like this!
Asked what the psychological benefits of adopting a minimalist or simple living lifestyle are and how individuals can cultivate contentment and satisfaction with less, Michela Thomas explained: “Psychologically, it can feel a lot less overwhelming in your day-to-day with less visual clutter. It is easier to organize ourselves and find things day-to-day with fewer belongings. If we keep buying more and more, we can find ourselves less satisfied with the things we already have, or now get. Often there is a mismatch between the pursuing and the consuming of something we buy - that we focus so much on acquiring things that we don't have enough time sitting in the appreciation of what we've got. If we buy something less rarely and learn the art of mindfully savoring something after we have got it, we might feel more content and grateful for what we have. Having less is more, and doing less is also more.”

Ever think that every fork you ever used in your entire life is still here somewhere?
When life gives you avocados, make guacamole, and then some cutlery
The question is, how biodegradable? Sun chips when on a big campaign talking about how their bags were biodegradable. But it required sunlight. Most of that trash ends up in a landfill and biodegradable or not, will not break down. They done core samples of land fills and found news papers from decades ago, with the print still readable.
At Roskilde festival in Denmark they (and have for many many years) corn based products. I dont understand why corn isnt usable enough?
polylactic acid plastic(PLA) creates waste by cultivating corn. Wasting water and polluting the ground with salts from fertilizer. PLA also does not biodegrade properly unless its exposed to air and ground up a bit. Really there is no "good" way to make things. Everything creates waste. look at her waist in the right photo, that is some painful corset she's wearing
That corsets were painful is actually a myth. Working class women wore them and did hard work in them. If you look closely at the picture you'll see that her waist doesn't just look tiny because of the corset, but also because the flaring dress was padded at her waist and her breast area was also padded a lot to make the then fashionable "pigeon breast" shilouette. It makes her waist look smaller than it is. Back then clothes were heavily tailored to give the appearance of a certain shape that the body did not have, whereas today we expect our body shape to make the clothes look good. Some women in the past overdid corset tightening to an unhealthy degree but that was no more normal than being anorexic is today. And altering photos to make the waist look even smaller was possible and often done even in the 19th century. Photoshop didn't invent that.

I plan on having an inexpensive wedding if I ever have one. Minimal decor, clearance dress, cake and some snacks for a small group and having an awesome honeymoon! And heaven help the MIL if she thinks she's going to run the show, because my mother will put her in her place.
That's the way to go. Almost every one of my friends who got married are now divorced and still paying off the $20,000 - 50,000 bills. I say to them was it worth the stand mixer I got you for all that debt? They all wish they just got married in court and had a small party for close friends only. I read this book at a very low point in my life and it actually helped. It's good. Would recommend!
Good to know. I've heard of it but I haven't read it. I'm building a little collection of books on depression. Just trying to understand my own brain.
Load More Replies...I have depression. One of my symptoms is incessant negative self-talk. For decades. But here's the thing: Most people's thoughts are mostly negative. Something like 75% of thoughts are negative. It's how our brain works, and it evolved to keep us safe and to prevent us from devoting too many resources to a losing cause. But most people don't get depression, and most who do get only a few self-limiting episodes. It becomes pathological in a minority. Why is that? Am I just more negative than the average person, or is my negativity misdirected? Probably a bit of both. But yeah, all that stuff about making people afraid of getting older or immigrants moving into the community, etc., just taps into our fundamental human nature and twists it for the benefit of people who make money by selling "anti-aging" cream or who collect donations by promising to kick all the immigrants out.
I weird I only upgrade my phone when my current one is no longer functional. I had the Samsung Galaxy S3 until right before the S8 came out. And it was because the charger port was massively over heating. Tried to get it fixed and it couldn't be.
yeah, it is actually pretty funny when you look at the newest features each year (incrementally less impressive). Like do you want space for 200 extra songs on your HD, 0.5mm thinner, the latest bluetooth protocol? Or in Apple's case, do you want 3 less ports?
Load More Replies...Reminds me of: Tell me what you want and I’ll tell you how to live without it.
My daughter discovered a sneaky, clever marketing tactic for an "anti-aging" brand: Q10=cuten. I've been teaching her how the beauty industry plays on our insecurities and invents new insecurities to trick us into thinking we need some BS product to hide our, idk, lines on our faces that allows us to make expressions without tearing our skin. I don't get worried about immigration. People come and go, in and out of our countries all the time. Doesn't change what I think of political parties and their leaders. I had tenant insurance. When I skipped the renewal this year, as expected the agent tried to scare me into thinking it would have a dire affect in my chances of buying a house in a few years. I'm not anywhere near able to buy a house. I don't plan on buying a house. These guys really like to push their products. So, I now see insurance as a cash grab for them. I bought my first cellphone in 2019, when I was planning on my first international trip to see some ppl I know. Felt it would be easier to stay in communication if I had a cellphone. Got an older one. Don't care. Hoo boy, I do recall ppl getting their undies in a knot when they found out I didn't have a cellphone. When you grow up not keeping up with tech you don't know what you're missing.
Love Matt Haig. The midnight library left me soul searching for weeks
Lastly, we were wondering how parents and educators can teach children and adolescents about responsible consumption and develop their critical thinking skills regarding advertising and consumer culture. The clinical psychologist told us: “It's helpful to engage children in the eco perspective of how fast fashion or mindless consumption impacts the environment, understanding the impact of using non-renewable resources. We can do that without creating eco-anxiety by showing in a neutral way that we try to reduce single-use plastic, or borrow books from the library instead of just buying new ones, or taking them to second-hand shops for toys and clothes. It then becomes part of their normal, just like we brush our teeth or look both ways before crossing the street - ingrained habits. In my child's school, they have an eco council where children can volunteer to take part and review the school's practices around sustainability, and come up with bright ideas. The children are our future, let them be part of designing it (in an age-appropriate way).”

Golf courses are rubbish for then environment, little scope for biodiversity and lots of water run off .
Insane water use, too, and very often they're established in water scarce areas (SW USA, Spain, Gulf states...).
Load More Replies...Fun Fact: Most golf courses use untreated water for irrigation, however they do not tell this to members. Many golfers do not know this and sometimes refill their water bottles from sprinklers. As a teenager I worked at a golf course that drew its water down stream from a waste treatment plant. I did not warn the mean golfers about what they were drinking
What if - instead of trying to make all these people go back to the office, when they can clearly do remote work just fine, we turned all those empty office spaces into affordable housing and small communities, with grocery, coffee shops, gyms, etc. Let's make everyone happy! And reduce pollution.
How about we start with racetracks first. Atleast golfcourses have some positive effect on the ecosystem where as driving a gasguzzeling carbonspewing craptrap in a circle 100 times does nothing for no one.
Both are bad, but the amount of poison used on a golf course is exponentially worse than a racetrack. I was engaged to a Asst Superintendent of a golf course. Horrible people work there and do awful things.

Load More Replies...So true! Lately I've started looking at buying things as a of my pay. For example, I make $16 an hour. I've given probably 60+ items in the last 3 years ranging from teas I didn't enjoy to furniture to earrings and received everything from a giant dog bed to a box of fresh persimmons and a giant bag of garlic scapes. I no longer have garage/sales to get rid of things. I save time and energy that I would spend putting one together, and I am absolutely certain that it comes back around to me in good ways. Buy Nothing is also an excellent way to build community - I've met several people I would never have crossed paths with.
The local Buy Nothing group is literally the only reason I use Facebook.
Where Can I Buy A Card With This On It?
First thing that comes to mind when I think about Halloween, Valentines Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter is a lot of plastic, dollar store garbage that will be tossed in the garbage soon after, or cluttering up thrift stores, sold at double the original price.
Kalani’ōpu’u Day. Named after the Hawaiian chief kidnapped & killed by Cook and his men. Tho not an official state holiday, it is held in remembrance by many Hawaiians. Particularly those who support the Sovereignty Movement. Specifically on Maui, Kauai and from Hilo down to Kalapana to Kapoho on Hawai’i. A Hao’le’aina like myself has had the privilege to participate in informal gatherings on this day and it is very much an honor.
I have a small list if you want to do some good....

Wonder how that works in the long run, since candles do not melt as much as they evaporate in the burning process.
A stupid concept for a fake product. The wax does not just melt, it burns away to feed the flame. You may recover some wax from side spills, but most of it would have been burned. Just use tealight style candles, they are more efficient and burn most of their wax.
Crappy tapers tend to drip wax more than consume it. I am wondering how you are going to get that candle out of the tube. If it is plastic - forget it - if it is glass, the wax will still be stick - even after freezing - cool concept - just not practical IMO. ( Candle maker as a hobby for 20+ yrs)
Load More Replies...How is the wax supposed to flow into the tube, if the tube is obstructed by the candle? And if, by miracle, the wax would flow into the tube, as soon as you light it up the tube gets black (if glass) or melts (if plastic).
Come to think of it, it looks like an old fashioned type of candle holder, which had a weak spring in the tube. The full weight of a complete candle would be enough to press the spring completely down, then it would push the candle up gradually as it would become lighter because of burning away mass. That way, one would not as easily risk tipping the candle over, since it would always be relatively low.
The WORD here is properly. Most candles are c**p ( except the ones I make LOL)

Never Forget, The Electric Car Is Here To Save The Car Industry, Not The Planet
well and your very tweet is for your influence, not for the planet. Ppl in some countries tend to not see that there's something in between black and white when it comes to electric cars. And that there are many benefits of an electric car besides causing way less CO2 than conventional cars in their lifetimes (even if battery was produced with conventional power mix). Sure, car industry makes a good deal, too, what's bad about this? They employ many workers, too.
The batteries are the problem. They don't last long enough, aren't particularly recyclable and a lot of child labour is used to dig up the minerals needed - goes with mobile phones too.
Load More Replies...I hate this argument. It's true but it's not the whole picture is it. I have to drive to get around due to disability. Public transport isn't good enough. It doesn't run frequently enough and walking to and from the bus stop is way too far away from my house or destination. Let's not forget that a wheelchair user getting onto the bus is impossible if there is already someone on board with a non-collapsable buggy. Driving is the safest and most reliable way for me to continue getting to work, going grocery shopping, heading out to have fun, etc. The only way I can do that in the most "environmentally friendly" way is to have an electric car. That is until the utopia of a completely accessible world is realised I guess.
Actually, the most environmentally friendly would be a gas-electric hybrid. Comes with far less of the negatives of both.
Load More Replies...So, I am trying to wrap my head around ICE, straight to electric. Seems the hybrid tech, if pushed across the industry rather than straight electric, would wean us better and cause less reliance on oil. I mean a pickup getting 28 mpg? Baby steps, baby steps. I drive to NC from Mich every year, not gonna take 2 days to make a 14hr trip.
its a buzzword made up to soften the transition. If the US would just allow small pickups again, we'd be better off. a 4 banger toyota gets 30+ mpg.
Load More Replies...People like to yammer on about the emission cost of manufacturing EV's...the reality is that 30% of emissions are generated from average, everyday oblivious people driving their poison spewing "personal vehicles" everywhere. Based on US car emission output, and accounting for production emissions, EV's take 8 months -3.9 years for use to negate the production emissions. When CE cars are manufactured....they produce emissions too! And then....they just spewing emissions, forever and ever. The reality is that the planet and everyone in it would be a lot better off if everyone walked/biked/cycled their way to where ever they needed to go.....which they could do, right now, the majority of the time. Or if the people who hate EV's so much started writing every single elected offical at every level of government and requesting a tax raise, not for "the rich" but for themselves, to fund public transport. But since that's not going to happen, EV's are a better option then what we have now.
The nearest grocery store to me is a 30 minute drive away. How am I gonna walk there?
Load More Replies...And what is wrong with that? Ever think how many people the car industry employs, and the economic impact directly and indirectly? And you can be as idealistic as you like cycling to everywhere but is a reality that cars are a necessity for some people/jobs/geography/situations, even in cities that have excellent public transport infrastructure. Like for transporting goods from/to stores. Cars will not go away, that's a fact. So hence need a solution that is greener. Being idealists without being a realist will not save the planet.
Bernie Showing Us All The Way!!
Yep! My two favourite coats are second hand from the op shop. One of them is a drizabone from the catering department at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Gave it a good wash (it was donated muddy, they were going to through it out so they gave it to me for free), it's a great coat. The second one is admittedly newer, but it's still on (at least) its second owner.

We Need A Different Economy
This is what I notice whenever I hear those economy reports in the news about "concerns of less consumers shopping for things they don't need".
Who consumes stuff they don't even want? I don't like broccoli and don't buy. I'm also not keen on lite beer and no one can make me buy it. The list goes on and on.
Well....that's what happens when a non-trivial portion of society exists solely to facilitate their continued existence. There's a whole bunch of people filling jobs that don't need to exist, which are also actively destructive not only to the planet but to society at large....but they continue to exist because people "need" those jobs. So they're continually kept juussst viable enough to continue to exist, so they can earn money that can continue to cycle through the economy. What we need to survive can be reduced to clean water, a warm box, and a salad. What we need to have a sustainable functional economy is limited by the large percentage of the population that doesn't differentiate between need and want, and has no desire to learn the difference.
Move to any socialist utopia you feel like Unlike the socialists we won't shoot you for leaving
Would an economy geared toward war, with just enough resources devoted to providing for those producing military equipment be more to your liking? If so, perhaps Ingsoc is your mother tongue.
There Was Once A Time When
And the latest shift is to get kids back into the workforce, so there could potentially be 3+ incomes holding a family up. Anything to keep from having to raise the minimum wage.
Not necessarily new, I had to get a job at 13 to help parents pay bills. What's insane is thinking that's an acceptable way for the world to work.
Load More Replies...This isn't even true and it never was. A small percentage of middle class families could live like that. The poor have always been two income families.
Living rural I can't confirm that. One income and one person (unpaid, unless you count fun and pin money) tending household, gardening (for the pantry), caring for the animals (at least some chickens) and raising the other bipedal stock (who got a playpen until they could walk, and chores after that).
Load More Replies...Yes, but back in the day, people got along just fine with less material possessions. For example, owning two pairs of shoes, and one of them only for special occasions, was considered the norm. The economy has gotten worse, yes, but how much of our money is going towards paying off debt due to materialism?
Yes, and back at that time, there weren't smart phones with monthly charges. That tv didn't have several monthly subscription charges, but only two channels all b&w, no one had even one computer, let alone several, with two or three game consoles all becoming obsolete after two years, not to mention a high-speed internet connection. The family only had one car, and groceries weren't all preprocessed stuff and a trip to a restaurant was a seldom, but big event, not because we're too tired to cook tonight . Healthcare was cheaper, because there was less of it... so many more people suffered and died because of it. I could go on and on. If we did without all the things we take for granted today, along with not living a disposable life, sure it would be a lot cheaper. But, that was then, this is now. I prefer now. I've lived way longer than I would have, "back in the day."
In my grandparents generation, multiple generations often lived in one house. My grandparents on my father's side were sharecroppers who didn't have electricity until my Dad was in high school (which was funny, because Grandpa was an electrician). My mother's family had an outhouse. Her birth parents were factory workers, and they both worked to make ends meet, and still didn't have enough. My parents started out in a "garage apartment": literally living in someone's garage. when I was a kid, a lot of very young people and very old people in big cities still lived in "single occupancy" apartments with shared toilets and baths on each floor. In my grandparents generation, you had "boarding houses" where people would rent out the rooms in a house like a hotel or apartment. Never see most of these anymore. Posts like these are based on movies, not reality.
Legal working age here in South Africa is 15. I'm behind my kid who wants a weekend job, probs just in school holidays, at a bookstore. Pocket money for her, she loves books, and it will teach life lessons you can't get elsewhere. NOT so she can help put food on the table. I'd steal food before I allowed that to happen
People think the old days were always just so affordable for everyone. It wasn't all that. Not everyone was owning homes they bought on their own with no other help from family.
Because if people are too busy trying to survive they are passive and society is fragmented, everyone is too busy, too exhausted. ‘A house divided cannot stand, ( paraphrase), people are no longer connected like they were 40, 6, 100 years ago in that greater numbers of people united for a common cause, like Martin Luther King drew massive, massive crowds! People identified with their roots, their communities generally together. People held a lot more demonstrations, protests. Our living standard is plummeting because it means there won’t be time to unite for positive change.
And more adult children are living with their parents because they can't afford rent even with a full time job.
When the retirement age was set at 60, life expectancy was around 65 (varies between countries and increases over time for most countries). So it wasnt as good as it sounds, on average.

As A Pcos Patient Who Often Feels Bad About How She Looks, I Need This Reminder A Lot
Capitalism is just a form of power and power will twist anything. They've twisted beauty for power. However, ugly and beautiful are real things. No one made a dime off the beauty of a sparkling mountain lake or the hideousness of a blobfish. Regardless of how attractive each is, both are still vital to this world and deserve to be appreciated and respected. We need to refuse to let power tell us otherwise. Same thing with people.
A blobfish, for the record, is only "hideous" because it is pulled up rapidly by stupid ol' humans from its home in the depths, which causes tissue damage and probably severe pain. Here is a picture of a normal and healthy blobfish vs one that has been subjected to atrocity: 0z9w7b5a5k...cec90a.jpg
Not really. Capitalism may pray on the concepts of ugly and beautiful, but they are not the ones who has invented it. There is a strong like between beautiful and useful, as making us think that certain things are beautiful and getting pleasure from that was nature's way to make sure that we did something that would spread our genes. E.g. beautiful proportions in a woman tends to be in line with what makes her body good at bearing children, and hence men who were naturally attracted to that kind of women tended to get more children. An assymetric face could be an indicator of some malfunctioning genes, and hence you don't want those in your children, and most people therefore find it "disgusting". Lush green landscapes is a sign of fertile land, and fertile land means a better yeild, so you can live a better life and feed more children etc. Capitalism has simply discovered our natural preferences and have found a way to enhance those to exploit them.
I assure you, the face has nothing to do with bearing children, the fact you're attempting to twist it into a "malfunctioning gene" argument just goes to show how deeply you and other humans, even after being faced with the truth of your own vanity will go to justify your bigotry. Wide hips? Good for birthing. "Meat" on the bones? Again. Less chance of starvation. Having ACTUAL GENE MUTATIONS myself, going through testing at the world's 2nd best hospital (number 1 in genetics) I can ASSURE ANYBODY READING THIS... your "ugly" argument is 100% b******t. My issues are INTERNAL you can't see them, oh except the fact I have flimsy fingernails... but they still grow just fine, and look MIGHTY PRETTY. Ffs.

And that the more universal our media is, the ideals become narrower, less attainable, and completely widespread

Eating These Corporations Is The Only Way To Truly Save The Earth
No, not this. The study this ignorant BS is referencing tries to attribute the emissions that YOU produce from driving your car, and powering your house to a fossil fuel corporation. Companies exist to make money, and they do a lot of shady things in that pursuit....but they can only continue to exist....so long as YOU give them money! You burn the gas driving far too much, you buy the single use plastic, you buy the food imported from half way around the world, you eat the fast food, statistically you waste 1.4lbs of food per day, you have too many things delivered too often, you waste water, you waste electricity. You! Production, and all the negative effects continue because YOU are materialistic, wasteful and short sighted and want to tell yourself the comforting lie that you have no part and thus no responsibility. Honestly consider every environmentally destructive thing you do. Imagine you are dead center average....4 billion people are more destructive.

Water use too. Every drought it's "limit your showers", but domestic water use is a drop in the bucket (sorry!) compared to agriculture and industry. And yeah, using water for ag is productive, but you don't *need* to grow cotton (a very thirsty plant) in the desert.
This meme is such BS. Maybe it's just ignorance of basic economics but as far as I know companies don't just make stuff and pile it unused in vast warehouses. They make stuff that people buy. Now I know everyone, excluding BP users of course, are just zombie consumers, buying every shiny bauble they see.
Yes. We're all gaslit into thinking the average person is the problem. We are just using what is available to us. Take it away for something better, healthier for us and the planet and we'll be easier to adapt. But you can't tell me we're making a difference by being given paper straws with a plastic cup.
Yes!!! The term ‘reducing your carbon footprint’ CAME from corporations…. It is a perverted, sick way of: Passing culpability to the consumer. Diverting the guilt and making the consumer consume more. There would be complete economic collapse if the general population suddenly stopped its feeding frenzy of consumption and waste. The dirty trio, oil, auto and rubber would be devastated. The prepackaged/fast food titans wouldn’t be razing land to produce palm oil, ( insert other bad fats), conditioning us to become addicted to food by combining empty, stripped down carbs with salt and sugar to keep us addicted, fat, unhealthy. The Big Pharma, ( aside from the very necessary medications) would see substantial losses with lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, less health issues related to obesity, poor dietary options, choices. Real food shouldn’t cost more than mass produced empty calorie foods. The latest dads, make up, fabric softeners, cleaning products, insecticides,
Herbicides, preservatives, Bisphenol A and all of the dirty, disgusting truths that are concealed in the name of profits, status, designed to break down, designed to be necessary, (like in Toronto in the 1950’s streetcar tracks were torn up, subdivisions were designed around the car). Governments ‘let’ this happen because they rake in the taxes at every level! From the raw materials through each step, ( eg. Ore, then the manufacturing of steel, of the vehicle, the parts, the employees). Second and Third World countries would be bankrupted by the banks so have to continue clear cutting, mining, etc. whatever industry…. The whole system is stacked against the consumer and the earth!

Well, it does work in the sense that standards of living are higher in capitalist countries than anywhere else, ever. There were rich people before capitalism, even before money was invented, where other things were used a currency. “One-Time Use” Froyo Spoons That I’ve Been Using For 8 Years
I believe we should all carry our own 'personal' cutlery, and wash after use. It makes sense and should be normalised.
Before the industrial age, it was extremely common to carry your own cutlery to eat with - even if that was just a simple knife. But there were also full sets of knife, spoon, and "protofork" (some were two tined instruments, some just simple skewers) that people could carry with them to eat with. Household cutlery wasn't even a widespread thing until the mid1600's, and then only among the wealthy. Until mass production became a thing, carrying your own eating tools was common. In parts of Asia, it's *still* common to carry your own set of hashi (chopsticks) and a spoon. This is something everyone could do again to cut down on "single use" waste.

Knew It Fit Here
They used to make things to last. Now they make them to wear out as soon as possible (and in the case of electronics, as soon as the warranty expires!)
It is partly true, but I think that there is some misconception in that too. See all the durable old products we see today are only those that made it. All the less good products have broken down by know, and hence they no longer exist for you to see. Furthermore we have become better at predicting exactly when a product will fail, and therefore we can design them with slimmer margins and still have them be just good enough. Oldtime products tends to be very overengineered just to be on the safe side, and hence many of them is better and will last longer than they need to, while using more material in their construction than strictly needed. It is not as much that things break that p**s me off, you get what you pay for, it is when companies build in features designed to limit the use of a product after a certain period to force you to buy a new one that I find despicable. E.g. when a printer is programmed to say that it has runned out of ink, despite still being able to print just fine

Or make things repairable like they used to. I had a friend that used to do TV repair. Now you throw it away & buy a new one.
Totally agree, "right to repair" is a big deal with consumers, but mega corporations do everything they can to prevent it. Most phones get replaced because the batteries die. It used to be normal to pop your phone open and swap the battery out, now it's completely impossible or requires very specialized tools. New legislation is forcing companies go back to making phones easily opened with common tools and we'll all be better off for it.

They tried to get me to let them in the back door and get into the store earlier than everyone else that was waiting in line. I told them that they were disgusting And they should go back home to be with their family.
I think I may be sick 🤮 I am so sorry for this man's family, for him, and even the brainwashed mob that killed him. This is one f****d up story.
I train in martial arts. Holding back even one person (even if they are smaller than you) requires a surprising amount of effort. Three people are more than enough to knock almost anybody over. And 150 lbs feels a lot heavier when that full weight is smashing down on your chest or neck.
there are few things i loathe more than black friday. I absolute hate that it found its way to Europe, and its even spreading into "Black friday week" and "summer black friday". Black Friday as a concept is so American and money-obsessed that it makes me sick. They're even doing it here now - IN A COUNTRY THAT DOESN'T EVEN CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING!! The only reason I even keep track of when it is, is so that I can stay far away from shopping malls on that disgusting, horrible day.
I have a tiny shop, not in the US. People have the nerve to ask me if I am doing Black Friday deals. I just glare at them in disgust

And shampoo is not even needed. Basicaly it's saop with more water in it. You can just buy (or make) soap and clean your hair with once or twice a week.
Yeah, if your hair is longer than an inch or so, don't ever clean it with soap! Soap is basic and will completely fry the cuticles in your hair, making it look horrible and constantly greasy. Shampoos are different from soap because they have a lower pH that doesn't damage your hair.
Load More Replies...Just want to add something that I did for my son's blackheads. Take a tablespoon of olive oil and massage it into the skin for a few minutes. Wash with your regular cleanser. I spent my teens and 20s trying to dry out my skin to get rid of blackheads and it never worked. I decided to go the other way for my son and discovered that the oil softens the blackheads so they come out easily to be washed away. Olive oil is much cheaper than the stuff you buy and it has antibacterial properties. Wish I'd known this 40+ years ago. I also worked with a woman who had beautiful skin and she swore by fresh lemon as an astringent. I never tried that, but her face was flawless.
Maybe if you wouldn't use a bunch of chemicals for your face on a daily basis your skin would have time to regenerate... I have a skin problem and am not even allowed to use (too much) soap for my face. I haven't had foundation on me since more than ten years. Guess what. I have a beautiful skin and people usually think that I'm at least ten years younger.
Got Laid Off From My Job. I Have A Mug I Really Love But Has My Old Company’s Logo On It. Instead Of Throwing It Away, I Ordered A $3 Waterproof Vinyl Sticker To Put Over It. I Love The Mug Even More!
I did the same thing. Put gay pride stickers all over my covertly homophobic former company
That's a great idea, don't love the font tho but that's a taste thing
So you had a perfectly functional mug and added an unnecessary plastic consumer product to it? Somebody definitely missed the entire point of the group.
because mugs with company logos are a much sought-after thing? and she said that she loved the mug
Load More Replies...You're assuming she actually has the skills to repaint a ceramic mug safely and aesthetically in the first place. Most people can't do that. She bought a $3 vinyl sticker, which is permanently affixed to a mug she doesn't intend to dispose of. The mug itself was preserved for use by a simple alteration to suit her tastes, and she didn't have to buy multiple other mugs (that would cost more than $3) until she finds one she likes as well as this one. The vinyl isn't ending up in a landfill (and needed to be vinyl for washing), and the mug is good for years to come now.

It's not mandatory in the EU. This is a pilot project McD deployed in France and in a few other countries... while at the same time founding "studies" aimed to prove it doesn't work. In the meantime they are testing and gradually rolling out a different strategy with most of the packages converted to recyclable paper, that apparently works much better in terms of practicality, costs and environmental impact.
Load More Replies...This allows product to be made in bulk & quickly grabbed, decreasing wasted time.
Load More Replies...I do not really like these kind of stuff. I am a little bit sceptic if they can be / or are washed properly.. and after a few usage they become worn out, with scratches etc. where the bacteria can easily stick, so I would not be happy to get my fries in these kind of plastic boxes
It is quite interesting how they implemented the system. The reusable packaging have individual RFID chips that are registered as "clean" or "used" and track if the container has been washed and is available for use. A container that is being filled is registered as "used" and will not be available on the system again until the automated washing machine has reset its state. It's a lot of development work but McD is well aware they don't have top-notch workmanship and most of their design goes into automating and mitigating human errors.
Load More Replies...These are just going to get stolen. Tim Hortons used to have the ceramic mugs but people would just take them home. Then the stores would be constantly replacing them.
So they just made the things out of plastic that will be on earth for the next 1000 years instead of paper that, well maybe is not the best, but could be burned with not much effort.
"Reusable" is just another word for plastic. They aren't going to be reused. They'll just be "recycled" and end up in landfill somewhere.
You Can't Tell Me That Driving Through The Night Would Be A Better Option Than This

My colleague lives in Cornwall, UK and she uses the sleeper service to come up to meetings in London. It actually costs the company less overall than my own much shorter journey. I only pay £60 return to get to London, but very rarely manage to find a London hotel close to the office (which is in the City of London) for less than £150.
We took the night train to southern France very often - until it was cancelled....
I took the train from the UK to Chamonix overnight, never ever will I do it again, it was awful! Although it was about 15 years ago, it might be better now, but sharing a train carriage with 3 strangers and only a toilet sink to wash in was horrid.

Those particular potatoes are wrapped to make microwave cooking easier, but yeah I agree

Sickening. Let’s keep Americans sick and poor. Let’s bankrupt the lower class and do our best to eradicate the middle class. Soon again it will be only the very rich and the very poor. I believe in readiness for when there won’t be enough food, enough electricity, enough necessities. If has been happening gradually and will only get worse. In Canada rents and housing costs are astronomical. Soon multi generations will have to live together to eke by like in many second and third world countries.
Yuck, and they're the "SUGAR FREE" aka "replaced with cancer causing chemicals" ones. "Sugar Free" should mean just that... free of sugar... if they want to ADD s**t they should have to put THAT big and bold on the package. I mean, they're also Asparagus free, Pinecone free, Squirrel free... none of that is advertised! (Context: somebody who has severe adverse reactions to artificial sweeteners)
Buy Nothing
Reduce consumption is a great idea but buy nothing is impossible. The thread on this cross-stitch required someone to grow cotton to make both the thread and the cloth. Someone else had to spin it into threads and then make it into cloth. A bunch of miners had to get the steel to make the needle for it. Someone had to grow food to feed all those people. That's a lot of people buying things just to survive and feed their families so one person can make an art piece on a wall. Art is what makes life worth living and a lot people depend on each other so an artist can afford both the materials and time to make it.
I think the "buy nothing" is basically hyperbole for "buy nothing superfluous and reuse what you have".
Load More Replies...Barter for it! Some necessities, like how it used to be 100+ years ago. Salt, sugar, spices, cloth, thread, some flour or grains. Everything else was generally self sustained, garden plots, even in cities. People kept chickens, pigs, cows, horses in the city, ( not everyone of course). People bartered quite a lot.
i think buy nothing is the concept of one or two days a week, you buy nothing, there are folks in this country (usa) that seem to have to spend money everyday. at a certain point how many pairs of shoes, or kitchen towels, or wash clothes (just some examples) do you require?
Making things is an expensive hobby. You have to buy materials. I just spent $100 for a scarf. I wasn't allowed to go to art school because my mom couldn't afford the materials.
Okay? And what if I cant do any of these things? I can´t draw, I can´t sew, I can´t build, I can´t sing. So I have to buy stuff.

It's Worse Than You Can Imagine In Japan
Plain wrong: USA is the second worldwide source of single-use plastic waste at 17.2 million metric tons. Only worse is -you guessed it!- China, at 25.4 million tons. India is third at 5.6, Japan is fourth at 4.7. The whole south america is in the same ballpark.
The point here is that the EU has banned the use of single use plastics.
Load More Replies...Where? In most of Europe those plastics are used for energy recovery because it's far more efficient than recycling, the loss of performance in the secondary material would make recycling non competitive. Energy recovery through thermal power plants is a very valid recovery strategy, basically you get a free plastic use before using oil as fuel. In the US, those go mostly to landfill, the worse disposal method environment-wise.
Load More Replies...More than three-quarters (77.2%) of this figure consist of single-use containers and packaging. Indeed, in terms of per capita plastic packaging waste emissions, Japan ranks second in the world after the United States, making it the largest emitter in Asia.
The US accounts for 4% of the population. They are responsible for 15% of global emissions. China, a country with a population of 1.4 billion produced 10.2 billion tons of Co2 in 2020. The US, a country with a population of 330 MILLION produced 5.2 billion tons of co2 in 2020. In 2016, the global plastic production was 400 million tonnes. the US produced 34.02 million tonnes of plastic, India was 2nd with 26.22 million tonnes China in 3rd with 21.6 million tonnes Brazil in 4th with 10.86 million tonnes Japan...came in at #10 with 4.88 million tonnes 50% of the plastic production....is single use.
I work at a place that bought for a contest for a decorating contest hundreds of little s****y plastic. Those MRI machines run on that gas that gas is running out.
The helium issue is a bit overblown. "Dry" cooling systems exist that have performances similar to helium-based systems on superconductivity applications, using mostly water. Nitrogen is a pretty decent alternative to helium in MRI cooling, and even hydrogen can be used, both are cheap and plenty. While it's true that Helium is still a non-renewable resource, in the last two decades the issue of scarcity has been greatly reduced.
Load More Replies...How do you distinguish "single-use" plastic. We always recycle or reuse our plastic here. Don't you?
Recycling plastic is a stop-gap measure that barely helps. The whole idea exists to keep us believing that single-use plastics can be sustainable. Every time plastic is recycled it degrades in quality until it is useless.

It kind of makes sense. If you stop and think about it, most people drink the soda straight from the can, whereby they are putting their lips directly on a surface they have little idea about the history of. Who has touched that can before hand? Did they wash their hands after visiting the toilet last time? How much dirt and grime has blown onto that surface during its tansportation. What else was it rubbing against in the bag that it was transported in to the picknic? Cleaning it when it was produces, and then adding another protective layer to keep it clean, ensures that you can be quite sure you won't get some sort of illness by drinking from it.

Even if the amount of water is not an issue where you live now, it will be one day ... and, every liter of fresh water needs some energy to be processed to being safe and clean. If we reduce the use of water, although not a rare ressource where we live, by XY %, the same XY % less energy go into freshwater processing, and that is, generally, part of the way to go. Reducing processes entirely, but the remaining, needed, amount, shall be as efficient as possible. Insight should guide us to avoid unnecessarities, not the fact that it sucks.

Giving corporations all rights and advantages of being a person, but at the same time stripping them from any of the responsibilities and excempting them from every law that could possibly be turned against them...
I would not necessarily blame the courts for this or assume they had bad intentions. Courts can only make judgements based on existing laws, even when they go against common sense or their own sense of justice. So if the law says foreigners can't sue US corporations in US courts, then that's the only ruling they could give.
No way did they actually write that. That is likely from someone involved in the suit. More likely activists against child labor. That is not an unusual tactic.
That's right, Baebee! Capitalism and profits ALWAYS come first! Maximize your profits by ANY means necessary, including child slavery!
wrong in several ways. jesner v. arab bank was a 5-4 split decision in which the court held that a FOREIGN corporation could not be sued unter the Alien Tort Statute, not b/c it was a corporation, but b/c it was there was no personal jurisdiction over a FOREIGN corporation whose alleged tortious acts took place OUTSIDE the U.S...the decision did not hold that U.S. corporations could not be sued under the ATS for alleged tortious acts that took place outside the U.S. (or, for that matter, tortious acts within the U.S.

It would be nice to live somewhere that has a long enough growing season to make this sustainable. In Denver, Colorado it has snowed as late the first week of June and as early as the first week of September. A bunch of people found out they have crabapple trees in their yards when one year it didn’t get warm and then freeze in March (stayed warm, unusual) and so the blooms actually turned into apples.
That's basically how my garden works (UK, approx 120 m2). Although I do also have some rose beds purely for pleasure. Almost everything else is edible. And yes, I do work full time. I usually spend about 15-30 minutes a day doing jobs, and maybe 1 day at the weekend if there is a less frequent, but substantial job to do (e.g. repairing a bed, or potting)

Contact ground for clearences, taxi to runway, contact tower for more clearences, checklists, contact departure, fly departure patterns, checklists, fly route, contact approach for more clearences, fly approach patterns, contact tower for more clearences, landing, cleanup from flight and landing configuration, maybe contact ground for more clearences, taxi to ramp. Three minute flights only exist in cartoons.
One thing to note here, the plane is stored in Camarillo CA, which is mainly where she flies from. There is no US Customs agent at the Camarillo airport, so when embarking on or returning from an international flight the plane stops at Van Nuys CA before hopping back to Camarillo. I'm not justifying private jet ownership, but this is an easy explanation for a 3-minute flight.

Disney Is One Corporation That Needs To Die
That's on the parents, not Disney. No one is twisting their arms and making them go. This is a huge problem in this Country. It's called scapegoating, blaming an outside entity instead of taking responsibility for your own actions.
It *is* on Disney, though. I grew up near Disneyland. My parents watched Disneyland being built. Disneyland used to be free to get in to, and you'd buy tickets for whichever rides or attractions you wanted to go on. My family was at Disneyland at least once a month. It really was the "Magic Kingdom" back then. My mom would pack a picnic lunch for us all, and we'd eat that. Disneyland was always profitable, it's not like they lost money with this system. It's just down to pure greed on the part of Disney, now. I agree that no one should be going in to debt to go to Disney. And no one is forcing anyone to do so.
