Cat claws are more architecturally interesting than most people give them credit for. Newborn kittens cannot retract their claws at all, which is information that will make you look at a kitten photo completely differently. The claws themselves grow in continuous layers, with scratching serving the very practical purpose of shedding the dull outer husk to reveal a sharper point underneath. So when your cat destroys the corner of your sofa, they are technically engaged in personal grooming. Most cats have 18 claws total, five on each front paw and four on each back paw, and every single one grows directly from the last bone of the toe.

But not everyone thinks claws are cute, though. They still consider declawing a solution to the furniture unfurling. It is not. The ASPCA, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and most of the developed world are firmly against it. The UK, Australia, and much of Europe have banned it outright, as have several US states and major cities.

The reason is straightforward and fairly grim once you understand what the procedure actually is. Declawing is not a permanent nail trim. It is the surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe, which in human terms is the equivalent of removing every finger at the top knuckle. It alters how a cat walks, frequently leads to chronic back pain and early arthritis, and carries risks of infection, nerve damage, and bone fragments left behind during surgery.

The behavioral consequences are also the opposite of what people hope for. Because cats walk on their toes, the altered gait from declawing makes digging in standard litter genuinely painful, which is why declawed cats often start avoiding the litter box and choosing softer surfaces instead.

Carpets. Beds. Anywhere that does not hurt. Claws are also a cat's primary defense mechanism, and without them, many cats become significantly more likely to bite. The scratching problem gets traded for a biting problem and a cat in chronic pain, which is a poor exchange by any measure.

The good news is that the alternatives are effective and significantly less dramatic. Regular trimming of just the sharp tips every one to two weeks takes most of the damage out of the equation. A sturdy scratching post covered in sisal rope, placed near the spots your cat already gravitates toward, gives them an appropriate outlet for what is instinctive behavior.

Nail caps, small plastic covers glued over the claws and lasting a few weeks before shedding naturally, are another option that many cats tolerate without much protest. None of these involve surgery, chronic pain, or a vet bill that makes you sit down.

Tigers hold the record for the largest claws of any living cat, reaching up to 10 centimeters in length and built specifically for grappling with prey the size of water buffalo. Most big cats keep their claws retracted in a protective sheath when at rest, which keeps them razor sharp and allows for completely silent movement.

The cheetah is the notable exception, with semi-retractable claws that stay permanently exposed to function like athletic spikes, providing the traction needed to reach 120 kilometers per hour. Your cat's insistence on keeping their claws sharp is, in this light, nothing more than an ancient and deeply practical instinct that has simply found itself in a flat with a velvet sofa.

If you have ever been on the sharp end of a claw, you will know the itch all too well. The initial sting is only the beginning, followed by a heat and an itch that seems disproportionate to the size of the wound. Cats groom their entire bodies with their tongues, coating their claws with saliva containing bacteria, proteins, and digestive enzymes.

The claw is sharp and narrow enough that when it breaks the skin, it pushes all of that directly into the tissue before the skin closes back up over it, trapping the irritants underneath. The body responds by flooding the area with histamines, which expand blood vessels, cause inflammation, and put pressure on nerve endings. The result is the stinging, burning, itching experience familiar to every cat owner.

The fix is to flush the scratch under warm running water with antibacterial soap for at least 30 to 60 seconds, apply an antibiotic ointment, and use hydrocortisone cream or an antihistamine if the itch is getting out of hand.

Given how darn cute all these kitties are, you won't be mad for long. Because there is something hypnotising about the void. Staring into those big round eyes makes it like a siren call for the claw. And we will never learn our lesson.
