Needless to say, acting ain't easy. It's not just about remembering lines, articulating, and gesturing properly. It's about being a certain kind of jack of all trades—assuming a role to its fullest, with its character, emotion, and lifestyle, whatever it may be.

And, in an actor's life, there will be numerous roles to fill, some even being as drastically different as serial killers or murderers and saviors of the world.

Bored Panda has created a list of some of the best actors out there who have managed to land roles of good guys as well as bad guys.

Check out the list below, and hey, while you're down there, vote and comment on the actors and characters you've enjoyed the most!

#1

Ian McKellen

Ian McKellen

McKellen has been in the acting scene for over 60 years now and has been credited in over 120 films and series. One of his most iconic roles is, of course, Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit series, where he plays a renowned wizard who helps restore peace to the land. In contrast, McKellen also plays Magneto, one of the key villains in the X-Men universe (though Magneto does develop other roles, so much that he also becomes a superhero and an ally to the X-Men, but I digress).

I've been lucky enough that a small theater downtown is reshowing the lord of the rings movies for the twentieth anniversary of the first movie, I haven't read the books, so the beginning of the first movie was confusing, but I'm reading the hobbit now!

Yes, as he doesn't care about killing innocents to get his way. We can't blame him for the atrocities he's had to endure and what they have done to him, but he still makes the decision to kill at a whim.

Elisha Wood has also played both good and bad guys in movies. He played a serial killer in the 2012 remake of the classic horror film "Maniac". He was amazing. The original was set in 1980 NYC. The grimy, crime-ridden city was the perfect backdrop for murderous mayhem. The remake takes place in LA. I was horrified at first, but after seeing the movie I was amazed. Such a good film. I recommend that everyone watch both of them if you are not familiar.

    Helena Bonham Carter

    Helena Bonham Carter

This actress has played numerous striking and vivid roles. One of many attention-drawing characters played by Bonham Carter is Bellatrix Lestrange in the movie series about the boy wizard Harry Potter. After playing her role of Bellatrix, she returned to the cinema as Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech. This role got her the BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Heath Ledger

    Heath Ledger

In his career, Heath Ledger not only had the opportunity to play both the villain and the hero, but he also took some iconic roles such as William Thatcher from A Knight’s Tale and the Joker from The Dark Knight. Understanding the complexity of the latter role raised questions about whether this could have had an impact on his mental health.

    Hugo Weaving

    Hugo Weaving

We have another Lord of the Rings actor here, this time English actor Hugo Weaving. He’s, of course, seen in films like V for Vendetta, The Matrix, Mortal Engines, and, as mentioned before, in the Lord of the Rings, where he played Elrond, the Half-Elven Lord of Rivendell. As for the bad guy part, he was Agent Smith in the Matrix.

    David Tennant

    David Tennant

Actor David Tennant, for some also known as one of the greatest actors in Scotland, has played in numerous TV series. One of his signature roles is the Tenth Doctor in the TV series Doctor Who. Did you know that Tennant became an actor because his dream was to star in this show? And now we get to see how well this dream turned out. He also showed his “villain” side in the TV series Jessica Jones, where he plays Kilgrave, or the Purple Man. A perfect what-to-watch for Marvel Comics lovers.

One of her best-known roles, especially for those who love fashion, is Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. She is a fierce-tempered woman who can make anyone’s day a living hell. Quite the opposite character is Donna, who Streep plays in Mamma Mia!. Donna is a light-hearted mother—nearly a perfect example of a character full of positivity.

This isn’t the first time Fiennes has made it into a Bored Panda list. Not too long ago, we featured actors who played multiple roles in the same movie, where Fiennes played three different roles in a single movie, namely as Ignatz Sonnenschein, Adam Sors, and Ivan Sors in Sunshine. Well, he’s back here with the roles of Monsieur Gustav from the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel and Amon Goeth from the movie Schindler's List.

There is no doubt that Jonny Depp is one of the most popular actors who has played more than 81 roles. One of his first important roles was Edward Scissorhands in the movie of the same name. 17 years later, Depp switched from scissor blades to a straight razor when he played the role of Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

CANT WAIT to see his voice acting in the new Lightyear movie. And they casted him as Buzz not because they wanted to replace Tim Allen, but because the Buzz lightyear toy is based on the character Buzz lightyear from a tv show, and that tv show is based on the Actual Buzz. So Chris Evans will play Buzz lightyear, and Tim Allen plays the Buzz lightyear toy....if that makes sense lol.

But this is not the only significant movie he has been in. The movie Mad Max: Fury Road, where he played one of his main good guy characters, Max Rockatansky, received some great reviews from critics. And this says a lot about his performance in the movie. Will Smith

    Will Smith

The examples of movies where Will Smith plays both the villain and the superhero are interesting as they do not show these characters as a typical bad and good guy. In the movie Hancock, he plays a superhero who loses his good name, and in Suicide Squad, his character Deadshot seems like a villain with morals. Smith is not only a popular actor, but also a producer. He has his own production company, Overbrook Entertainment.

I don't know. I like Will Smith and I think he's great and talented, and capable of a good range of characters. But it seems to me he has kind of a policy of not playing the bad guys. A bit like Jackie Chan, but more subtle, as his roles tend to be less of absolute heroes and more dimensional. Even in Suicide Squad, yes, those were originally villains from comicbooks, but in the film? Only the Joker and Amanda, I'd say.

In the film, "villain" was just a title. I think the Maleficent films bear an interesting concept, but the execution is.... I guess the mass audiences weren't really ready for that kind of villain depiction, so they had to turn her into the... hero. This is pretty common with films starring "villains", it's not easy to make a morally challenging good film.

I thought the point of the movie Maleficent was to paint Maleficent in a better light...

Nah she wasn't evil, she just wanted what was fair. She wanted to protect. And she was also heartbroken in the first one.

In the Maleficent movie I don’t think she was really much of a villain.

Her Maleficent in the live action context can't be considered as a villain, imo.

She was so intimidating in Maleficent that none of the child actors wanted to film a certain scene with her, so she let her daughter do it, and that's why it's so genuine when she grabs her horn to investigate. Cute film.

    Brad Pitt

    Brad Pitt

There is no doubt why one of the best-known Brad Pitt movies is Fight Club, as I guess there is quite a number of people who have heard and remember the first two rules of Fight Club. In this movie, Pitt played Tyler Durden, an antagonist of the movie. A movie where Pitt appeared as a whole different kind of fighter was Troy. In this historic movie, he played Achilles.

If you think Brad Pitt is a bad actor, it's because you've only seen him in "leading man" roles. He's wasted on those roles where he's just expected to be attractive. Put him in a character role and he steals the show!!!

Meet Joe Black was pretty good, it focused more on his expressions and less on his abs.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger

    Arnold Schwarzenegger

Now known as the governor of California, Schwarzenegger is still seen as a popular actor who played in movies such as The Terminator and Predator. In The Terminator, he played a cyborg who was sent from the future to 1984 to kill the protagonist Sarah Connor. With its genre, this movie is quite opposite to the one in which Schwarzenegger starred in 1990. Kindergarten Cop is an action comedy where he plays an undercover cop seeking justice, adding a good guy role to Schwarzenegger's movie list.

I think it would have been more fun to point out that he played the bad guy in The Terminator and the good guy in Terminator 2, while essentially playing the same character!

He was the main character in this one movie I saw, I don't for the life of me know the name, but that movie made me want to vomit. One of the villains shoved a snake down a mans throat. It sound so squelchy and ugh! If someone knows the name of the movie, please tell me.

    Demi Moore

    Demi Moore

It seems that actress Demi Moore played not one but at least several villain characters that we should all remember. She was the main antagonist Madison Lee in the movie Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, and Meredith Johnson in Disclosure. Her not-so-villainous role was in the movie L.O.L. where Moore played Anne, a mother who is dealing with a troubled teenage daughter.

Demi Moore is a very difficult actress to get. Even she has been around for a while on and off the silverscreen, few of hers are interesting movies like the "The Seventh Sign", ""Indecent Proposal" and "The Scarlet Letter". After the massive flop of "Striptease", she haven't had relevant roles nor interesting characters since. She has been great in "The Joneses" (2007).
