18 Powerful Photos By Mital Patel Showcasing The Last 2 Northern White Rhinos And Their Dedicated Caretakers
There are only two northern white rhinos left on Earth. Both are female. Fatu and Najin live at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where a dedicated team of rangers and caretakers looks after them every day.
American photographer Mital Patel’s series The Caretakers, winner of All About Photo’s September 2026 Solo Exhibition competition, offers an intimate look at this extraordinary place and the people who have made caring for these animals part of their daily lives.
Fatu and Najin cannot simply be returned to the wild. They have never known it. Instead, they live within the conservancy, protected by rangers who have spent years learning their habits and moods, understanding their different behaviors and recognizing the sounds that matter.

I can see why he's smiling, to be so close and at ease with magnificent animal😍
Such beautiful animals, I can't stand the idea that people are still k*****g them for their horn.
Heart-breakingly sad. Magnificent animals condemned to extinction by the greed and brutal indifference of some human beings. The rangers are heroes. When I lived in Kenya in the 90s I used to visit Ol Pejeta regularly, just so I could pet Morani, the male black rhino who could not be returned to the wild for his own safety. He was a big, gentle giant. Ol Pejeta is an amazing place and their rangers rightly deserve our respect and admiration.
I hope that genetic engineers will do their best for these magnificent animals to continue their steps on earth.
GOD BLESS THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES AND THEIR GUARDIAN ANGELS WHICH IS WHAT THESE WONDERFUL CARETAKERS ARE. THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOU DO AND FOR THE LOVE YOU HAVE.
I can't work out if this rhino is quiet young or very old. Either way, I'm glad they're safe.
Two big and glorious animals, that we humans have made the last of their kind. All the best to them, and shame on us for letting this happen !
These are wonderful photos, but at the same time they are so sad. Bless the people who take care of these last two ladies.
You can tell by the smiles on the human faces that they love their job.
It's so heart breaking that people are still k*****g these beautiful animals for their horns. It's so horrible that there are only two of these ladies left.
