Chris Denovan is a fine artist based in Cape Town, South Africa who focuses on mark-making with paint and creative composition of colour and shape in his portraits.
I made this short film on Chris to show a bit about his process and how he goes about creating a portrait. Staying true to his quirky style, he did things a bit differently :)

In the film, I tried to capture his wild movement and quick imaginative thinking.
I find it incredible how he works from a digital collage/sketch that he creates and transfers it onto the canvas using his own intuition and feeling for how the work should develop.
I wanted to focus on the bright colours of the paint
His portraits are very colourful and vibrant recently, and he works with many layers of acrylic and oil paint.

The ending is a bit of a surprise…
After all the fun we had making the film, we still wanted to show one of his completed paintings (to promote his work!).. It is just a brief glimpse but you can see the fascinating abstracted portrait style he has become known for.
