For eleven summers, something extraordinary was hiding just beneath the surface of beaches around the world.

Children digging in the sand. Families strolling the shoreline. Travelers chasing the tide.

And then, unexpectedly, discovery.

A miniature sarcophagus. Ancient in appearance. Impossible to explain. A moment of wonder in the palm of your hand.

Now, that global treasure hunt has reached its final chapter.

New York artist and author Mike Drake’s decade-spanning public art project has officially concluded, with its final artifact, sarcophagus No. 814, along with the original silicone mold used to create the series, entering the collection of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

What began as a fleeting childhood moment in 1974 evolved into a worldwide phenomenon rooted in imagination, mystery, and shared human curiosity.

As a child, Drake buried a toy sarcophagus while playing with a G.I. Joe set, only to lose it in the sand. When he could not find it, his mother offered a simple but powerful idea: perhaps someone else would discover it one day.

That thought never left him.

More than four decades later, Drake brought that idea to life. Using a custom Smooth-On silicone mold, he began casting cement miniature sarcophagi and quietly burying them along beaches. What started along the East Coast soon expanded across the United States and internationally, reaching coastlines in Asia, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, and the Caribbean.

Each piece was placed with intention but without announcement.

No maps. No clues. No promotion.

Only the possibility of discovery.

“The idea was simple,” Drake said. “Someone digging in the sand would suddenly find a treasure. Something that sparks imagination and wonder.”

Over time, the project grew organically, with friends and family joining in, turning beaches into living story spaces where chance encounters became lasting memories.

In total, 814 sarcophagi were created and hidden over eleven years.

With the original mold now showing signs of wear from years of use, Drake made the decision to conclude the project, allowing it to end as intentionally as it began.

Its final destination is fitting.

With the acquisition by Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, the project transitions from fleeting, buried moments to permanent preservation within one of the world’s most celebrated collections of the strange and extraordinary.

“I’ve loved Ripley’s for decades,” Drake said. “The idea that this could sit alongside real artifacts in one of their Odditoriums is incredible.”

While recent speculation linked the discoveries to viral marketing for upcoming mummy-themed entertainment, Drake emphasizes that the project was never promotional. It was always about creating a moment of magic for a stranger.

Even now, hundreds of these miniature relics may remain hidden beneath beaches around the world, waiting to be uncovered.

A quiet invitation to wonder still buried in the sand.

Though this chapter has closed, Drake hints that new creative endeavors are already taking shape.

For now, the legacy of the project lives on in two places: in the memories of those who made unexpected discoveries, and in its new home within Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, where the unbelievable becomes part of history.
