I am religious but I'm not mean and also respect others lifestyles.

A lot of people take themselves too seriously and think they know all of the answers to all of the questions in the universe. Some of those people are religious, some of them aren't. I try not to judge someone based on their faith, or lack of it.

Hate is so far removed from anything Jesus ever taught. It's too bad people like that aren't self-aware so they can examine where they went wrong...

I think the problem isn't the religion, it's more of what you perceive from your religion and how you act upon it. I know many religious people who are still very tolerant, accepting and kind.

There are religious groups that march in support in my town's Pride parade. I was happy to see a Catholic group (the first) this year. There are also denominations that perform same-sex weddings.

It's not right to classify ALL Christians based on the actions of this one wacko (who, BTW, was NOT ID'd as a Christian, as there are other faiths that believe homosexuals go to hell [see: certain countries where you get the death penalty for being gay]) any more than it is to classify all Muslims as terrorists because of a few wackos on 9/11, Tolerance goes both ways.

People do not have the right to comment on anyone's choice of lifestyle or religion when it deviates from their own. If you don't like it, SHUT UP. Indeed. I'm not a Christian, but I have friends who are. And they're not like that either. Meanwhile, there are many atheists who are homophobes as well. Yet not all atheists get thrown into the same basket of 'evil'. Just because of the attitude or behaviour of one. Unlike Christians, who get lumped in together. Bigotry & hypocrisy exists on all sides.

Especially given the fact that all 4 verses in the Bible prohibiting homosexuality were inserted by Pope Constantine I as a measure to combat the population decline that was happening at the time. The reason was that the general attitude was that women were only for procreation and were not capable of feeling passion, love, true emotion, etc., so if you wanted a truly passionate loving relationship, you had it with another man. If you needed an heir, you slept with a woman until she was pregnant, then you went back to your boyfriend for the emotional connection. This attitude was contributing to a declining birthrate, so the Pope decreed that G-d said sex between men is evil and you'll go to hell if you do it. Once that decree was made, birth rates started to climb. There's a book about the secular history of the Bible and the Church that is fascinating. It explains how a lot of things the faithful of the major religions assume as the given word of G-d were actually politically, financially, and sometimes just plain a*****e-y motivated.

Eternal torment isn’t biblical it’s what churches used in the old days to control the masses and keep the coffers full. Jesus talked about Sheol which was the grave (Job prayed to go there to hide, so hardly a place of eternal torment) and Jesus talked of Gehenna, a literal place where people would throw their dead animals or criminals not worthy of a burial. It was a symbol of destruction, not eternal torture. It’s wrong to judge another human being based on your values as their values, not yours are the basis of how they live their life. I have atheist friends and wouldn’t expect them to conform to my values to please a god they don’t believe exists. Our mutual respect for each other’s rights to believe what we do means we have good relationships.
