When Batteries Lasted Longer Than 5 Mins
The 1990s were an iconic decade for many reasons. It brought us some of the most famous films of all time, including Titanic, Toy Story, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, and many more. There were also some incredible songs and albums released during this decade, thanks to bands like Nirvana, The Cranberries, the Spice Girls, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, TLC, Britney Spears, and more.
But when we look back on the decade today, we don’t focus purely on the pop culture and delicious snacks. Many of us, particularly younger generations, romanticize the ’90s because it truly was a simpler time. Before AI and big tech companies controlled our lives, the advancement of technology actually seemed exciting!

“Without smartphones or any form of mobile communication, there was a huge amount of freedom. You could go to clubs and parties that were out of bounds by telling your parents the correct lies about staying over with a friend,” Flora Watkins writes for The Spectator. “Most of us made it out of our teens without needing to be medicated for anxiety.”
However, the ’90s weren’t perfect. Watkins notes that there was still rampant homophobia (which you can even find today in some places) and few places where gay marriage was legal. So while it’s fun to celebrate the wonderful aspects of the era, it’s also important to note that many people wouldn’t actually choose to go back in time, even if they could.

When it comes to the passionate nostalgia that many people feel for the 1990s, Dr. Renee Middlemost, an expert in pop culture, says that it’s natural for every generation to look back on past trends. It’s not surprising to her that sitcoms from the ’90s like Friends have become so popular among younger generations, especially in this era of streaming services.
"The whole sharing thing with Netflix and recommendations that has narrowed the tastes of people in regard to television viewing has been seen in cult cinema, too,” Dr. Middlemost explains. “It's all been done by word-of-mouth. And with the sharing of videos and content, the online world has made the pop culture loops come around much more quickly than before."

Another reason why people love indulging in nostalgia is that it can be extremely comforting, especially when we’re living through such uncertain, unstable times. The economy is a wreck, and issues are escalating all over the globe. It can be nice to turn on a television show or film that took place prior to 9/11, the pandemic, and Donald Trump’s presidencies.
Nostalgia can also be a wonderful way to bond with others. You may meet someone that you don’t have much in common with, but once you start reminiscing on your childhoods, you may realize that you grew up in extremely similar ways.

We Really Had All The Greats
Even if the world wasn’t actually any safer or more stable back in the ’90s, many of us want to believe that it was. If you were a child or teenager during that time, for example, you likely weren’t aware of all of the issues that the world was facing. Plus, if you have plenty of wonderful memories to look back on from that time, 1990s nostalgia might hit especially hard.

University of Florida Medical Sciences Online explains that nostalgia can make us feel good by building our self-esteem, helping us find meaning in our lives, encouraging authenticity, and simply bringing joy to our lives. So what if it requires rose-colored glasses? If it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, that’s a positive thing.

One thing to note about nostalgia, however, is that it can sometimes go from being a helpful coping mechanism to an unhealthy avoidance tactic. Hannah Mackenzie, a BACP-registered psychotherapist, told Stylist that we have to be careful to not get caught up living in the past. There’s nothing wrong with looking back, but if it prevents you from being present, you might need to reel in your nostalgia.
If you find yourself avoiding feelings or experiences by placing yourself in the past, that’s not a great sign. And Mackenzie says you may need to look at the past with less of a bias. “Nothing is perfect, and being honest with ourselves about that will help us to have more meaningful and well-integrated lives in the present.”
