Boy, 9, Put In Care Program After Strangling 11 Animals At Petting Zoo

A nine-year-old boy went on a killing spree at a petting zoo in The Netherlands, strangling several animals to death.

The Dutch primary school student went to the petting zoo, located in Hoek van Holland, a town in the southwestern corner of the country, on March 11. There, he reportedly killed up to nine rabbits and two guinea pigs.

Highlights
  • A 9-year-old boy strangled 11 animals at a Dutch petting zoo.
  • The boy had previously visited the zoo with parents, but was alone during the incident.
  • He won't be prosecuted due to being under 12; instead, he'll enter a care program.

The nine-year-old had allegedly visited the zoo on multiple occasions with his parents before but made the journey unsupervised that day.

After the violent incident, the animal killer was caught by police, and his parents were called to the scene.

The nine-year-old won’t be prosecuted following the incident because he’s under the age of twelve, but reports have stated that he will be entering a care program, as per The Dailymail.

According to the manager of the petting zoo, the boy “showed no emotion after the act.”

Ali Dorenbos, the manager of the Rekerhout petting zoo in Alkmaar, reacted to the brutal attack. “It makes you completely sick!” she told De Telegraaf.

Dorenbos experienced a similar situation at her petting zoo, located in the province of North Holland.

“The sheep were shot with bows and arrows, their udders were pulled, and the goats were shaken by their horns,” she recalled before adding that calves and chickens also suffered animal abuse.

“Horrible. How? This is very extreme. And was there no supervision?” asked Anne-Marie Le Buhan of the Het Geitenweitje Foundation in Laren, North Holland.

“I feel sorry for the animals, but also for the little boy who apparently feels so bad that he has to do this,” said Dutch Psychiatrist Esther van Fenema.

As van Fenema explained, parents need to pay attention to this type of violent act. Animal maltreatment or abuse can be a “worrying sign of behavioral disorder[s] in children” that could bring more profound consequences in the future.

Dr. Lim Boon Leng, a psychiatrist from Dr. BL Lim Centre for Psychological Wellness, said that the concerning behavior “might be indicative of underlying emotional distress and may be a reflection of the child’s difficult or abusive environment.

“Addressing the incident allows for an opportunity to educate the child (to understand) right from wrong in the very least,” he added.

“Leaving the incidents alone is detrimental to the child and may result in the behaviors escalating.”

This is particularly true when the child has the cognitive maturity to understand that they’re inflicting pain on the animal, and yet, they repeatedly do it anyway, notes Psychology Today. In those cases, professional intervention from a mental health expert is needed.

Many people stressed the importance of paying attention to these criminal acts for their potential consequences in the future

People in those comments don't understand a crucial thing, this is not the parents fault. This kid, while legally too young to diagnose, is a psychopath. There is a chance this 9 year old didn't even know what he was doing was so wrong. The parents, like some suggested, shouldn't be punished for this but should definitely take the kid to get diagnosed so this won't escalate in the future.

Psychopathy is not easy to treat. It also seems to be on a spectrum and its effect varies. Neuroscientist James Fallon is lucky in that he enjoys socializing. He just doesn't have a conscience or fear and his feelings for his family is no different from his feelings for some friendly guy at the pub. This child is a very different story. Let's hope he can evolve with treatment. I read of one that uses de-escalation and rewards.

Well, he sounds like a future serial killer in the making! A 9 year old should have a pretty good understanding of what's right and wrong, so this behaviour is not only despicable, he should have known it was wrong. Those poor animals too.

Forget about parents not supervising the boy, I'm more surprised and shocked that he killed so many animals before being caught. Was there no one from the petting zoo overseeing their visitors?

I agree with everyone else's comments. Where was the adult that was supposed to be watching him? No kid should be left alone at a petting zoo. He needs to be monitored for years and never allowed around animals again.

It seemed to suggest he went alone that day, it probably wouldn't be too hard to sneak in with a large group. This does, however, suggest that he knew he shouldn't have been there or be allowed in alone. Probably planned it on his trip the day before. This was no spur of the moment madness.

Killing animals with no sense of emotion or remorse is a telltale sign that this child is a sociopath.

This can’t be the first time something like this has happens. He’s killed before. He should have been supervised, this is disturbing.

The boy clearly has a mental problem, what do all these people demanding "severe punishment" think it would help? That's about as clever as trying to beat the epilepsy out of me. The boy needs to get help and remain closely supervised, and yes, there's the question why no one noticed it earlier (though I've seen petting zoos where you could enter the animal's stable and it wouldn't be obvious to anyone if something like that happened. Also, who expects such a thing? )

How was no one watching? No parents or employees? He managed to kill 11 animals! This is absolutely nuts.

im glad he’s getting care at that age bc it’s usually easier to treat mental illness when it’s caught early. it’s also important to remember that we can’t diagnose him. and writing hateful things about him online is going to make his recovery much more difficult. i get being angry bc i am very angry but disorders like anti social personality disorder (which a lot of people are claiming he has) is manageable and shouldn’t be stigmatized

Another Joran Van Der Sloot...? (Murdered Natalie Holloway and another girl, I forget her name, sorry. Then he finally got some justice as he ATTEMPTED to kill another girl, luckily she escaped with her life and was finally able to put that sicko in prison! I doubt it was only the 3. I Highly doubt it was only 3.)

The story is horrific but I wanted to compliment your writing. Majority of news articles and such as this never call it for what it is. You very eloquently were blunt when putting the part about the violent act and referring to him as the killer. I really appreciate that as most stories water it down or don't call it out the way you did. Very well done to the writer, Marina! I'd like to see more written by this woman

He's clinically a psychopath. That's not a consequence of nurturing, it's biology and there's no 'cure'. Accept, adapt, set clear boundaries and go on with the knowledge that he will never love or care about others, won't have a conscience and the potential of him becoming a serial killer.

Honestly completely agree. This type of boys are just too dangerous to be allowed to grow up, because we all know that he will kill again, and it's only a matter of time before he moves on from animals to humans.

If they're not going to punish the parents (who are still responsible for whatever their child does any other time) they should at LEAST punish them for neglect!
