5-Year-Old Notices Mom Collapsing So She FaceTimes Her Dad, And People Are Saying The Family Would Be Broke If It Were The US

When we hear the words ‘iPad’ and ‘child’ in the same sentence, we assume it’s going to be another tale of how too much screen time is harmful to the development of kids. However, not this time. This time, both were instrumental in saving a life.
When 5-year-old Priya Galvin’s mom Mary collapsed at home from a catastrophic stroke, the girl did the only thing she could think of. She grabbed the family iPad and FaceTimed her dad, telling him that her mom wasn’t feeling well. Mary was rushed to Cork University Hospital, Ireland, where the staff there saved her life by performing a thrombectomy. Now, the entire family’s back at home and Mary is well.
When CUH’s Consultant geriatrician and the clinical lead for stroke services Liam Healy shared this story on Twitter, people praised the hospital staff and 5-year-old Priya. Meanwhile, others expressed their relief that the situation occurred in Ireland and not, for example, the United States; otherwise, the family would have hardly been able to cover their medical expenses.

According to Dr. Healy, CUH has “the busiest inpatient stroke service in Ireland.” He also mentioned that this was just one of two hospitals in the entire country that offers procedures like thrombectomies. In case you were wondering, a thrombectomy involves a specialist team removing the clot.
“We work closely with different services within the hospital to figure out why someone has had a stroke, how we can minimize the damage caused by the stroke, and how we can initiate a patient’s rehabilitation,” he said.
There are several main signs that you might be having a stroke. Including sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg. Especially on one side of the body. Another sign is sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech. As is sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. You might also be having a stroke if you have trouble walking, feel dizzy, suddenly lose your balance and lack coordination. The final sign of having a stroke is a severe headache with no known cause.
According to one study that looked at over 97,000 hospitalizations in the US, the cost of hospitalization for stroke patients depends on the type of stroke. The researchers found that, on average, ischemic strokes cost patients 62,637 dollars, hemorrhagic strokes cost 16,331 dollars, while other types of stroke cost 48,208.

Some people drew attention to the fact how difficult things would have been for the family if they were living in the US, instead of Ireland

I'm curious. Has this ever worked? Like ever? Surely it's not worth your effort!
As an american that has been through the medical (mess) system, I am in awe of what single payer universal health care does. Health care should be a right, like a public education, mailing a letter, driving on the interstate highway. Society built these institutions, but healthcare is largely funded by the public for the financial benefit of the few. In the USA? Eligible to vote? I endorse Bernie Sanders for president and Liz Warren for VP. If the people of planet Earth survive the idiot Trump let us hope that Putin will not install another criminal fool with his finger on the button. Let us hope!
Why do people in other countries assume that we, as Americans, like our current healthcare system & insurance coverage? Many Americans want socialized medicine and healthcare for all. It’s just incredibly difficult to change the system.
It's probably because a lot of us in other countries don't get to hear your voice over the crazy noise of those freaking out that 'socialism is communism' bullshit. | Sending love from Canadaland.
Maybe your friends Cristina..but I've had friends that complained they'd be paying higher taxes for someone else's healthcare. They fail to realize how it helps them to help others. They see socialism as an evil. Not a single one of them has taken an economics class to understand how universal healthcare and socialist countries work. It's the uneducated middle class that's holding back the progress of America. Let's hope we get a leader that understands how this all works.
I flip this to Warren for president and Bernie for VP, but *anyone* is an improvement over our current plutocrats.
@AlpaPuck. Not every economist. There are just as many that say the simple solution to Warren's plan is not only increasing taxes on the Uber Wealthy, but giving a basic living subsidy to the poorest of the poor. If the poorest people in America are all given a basic income to not only survive but thrive, it does nothing but help the economy. They will drive spending up creating more jobs in companies that provide goods and services. Add to that the idea of Universal Healthcare and you also provide a workforce that will miss less days with illnesses. Many Americans miss more time from work when they can't go see a doctor for what ails them. By allowing people to see a doctor at anytime with little or no cost, you have a healthier population capable of producing more outputs in the form of goods and service. It's simple economics. And that boost to the poorest in the nation would run about $500M. Not even 1/10th of 1% of the whole defense budget for 2019. Sooooo.....

Literally every economist has taken Warren's plan and said it would cause an economic depression. Im all for a female president, but lets find a smart one instead of just any woman running.
the sad thing is there were/are rumours of Britians prime minister selling our free health service so we will have to pay for everything
@sloth cat. Get you and your fellow Brits to fight it with every fiber of your being. Make it personal. Protest with signs that show how many people will die each year without Universal Free Healthcare. You certainly can use USA stats to back up what you are saying. Go Fight the Good Fight!!!
Why not other way around, Monty?
Priya and the medical team are awesome
