5 Hand-Painted Animations On Public Transport

Urban artist “Ettoja” from Lithuania has created these animated gif graffiti paintings on 5 public trolleybuses.

Every short animation tells a story of the goods, produced some time in the past in Kaunas city, in Lithuania.

For example a huge shoe factory “Inkaras” operated in Kaunas during 1933-2012. “Inkaras” means “anchor” in Lithuanian. So the artist pictured the appearing and later drowning of the shoe. Or the famous “Šilelis” tv, produced in Kaunas 1953-1995. “Šilelis” means “little pine forest” in Lithuanian. So Ettoja pictured trees growing out of the tv.

There are 12 frames painted using spray-paint on each trolleybus. Later photographed one-by-one and merged into animated gif.

Preparation time is the most important when creating a gif graffiti. Before painting a test animation is made. You need to be precise as much as possible with each frame you paint, so the final animation would look smooth.

The time to paint the whole thing was limited to the weekend for one bus, because every trolleybus needs to be operating on the line during the whole week. The work began Saturday mornings and finished Sunday nights. And the trolleybuses were off to the city at the moment the artist finish painting.

All the trolleybuses will be operating in Kaunas till autumn, and later changed with the new ones. So if you are planning a trip to Lithuania – put a Kaunas city on your list for sure!
