Ever been mistaken for an employee? If you have, it’s fine, everyone has. If you haven’t, it’s okay—nobody likes to accept it. But there’s a safe space to talk about hard things and it’s a subreddit called r/IDontWorkHereLady. It turns out, people assuming you’re a staff member is a thing.

One serial “do you work here?” recipient is a redditor who goes by u/Wiggle_it_loose. But the dude doesn’t sugarcoat it. He thinks it’s because of his “‘retail’ face” that he’s approached so often.

This time, a super rude woman at the supermarket forced this guy to take on a plan B. When the lady, titled a “Douchebagette” for obvious reasons, bombarded u/Wiggle_it_loose with commands to get her eyelash curlers, he picked a lethal weapon. Hint: cold, hard honesty.

The redditor shared this encounter with a rude lady who mistook him for a staff member

Bored Panda reached out to the moderators of the r/IDontWorkHereLady subreddit, which, according to its description, “involves stories about folks that go into other businesses and have irate customers mistake them for employees.”

One of the mods told us that the subreddit, which is essentially a “derivative from other subreddits like r/TalesFromRetail,” was created 5 years ago. “We get lots of different submissions and moderate them according to suitability.” The rules say you gotta “keep it classy” and bear in mind that “people are people, too.” As a result, “Not everything posted remains visible on the sub.”

The mod said that the subreddit epitomizes the fact that “even though it shouldn’t be, it’s incredibly common for people to just assume that someone works at a given location and to treat them badly based on that assumption.” But r/IDontWorkHereLady encourages people to let their hearts out. “The more outrageous the story, the better!” claims the community.

    And people found it hilarious

When the customer is this horrendous, sometimes it's just better to let them be the 'expert', and answer their actual questions, even when you know their questions are wrong, and you believe you know what they *actually* mean. Having worked in customer service, funding my way through highschool & university, I've acquiesced to a few arsehole-customers' "expertise" (while following corporate rules & remaining polite throughout)... but never to this level of brilliance. I tip my hat to this man. ;) :P

It is really sad how many people think that it is okay to go into a place of business and just be generally rude to anyone they come across. To people who behaves rudely to workers at a place of business: No one owes you a thing and being a complete jerk will make people not want to deal with you. I am a delivery driver and at the restaurant that I work at there are places that no one wants to deliver to because they don't want to deal with someone's jerky attitude. One place, we don't deliver to at all anymore because it's a 30 minute drive to get there, the people are rude, they complain a lot, and they don't tip. The Karen joke needs to stop. There are too many nice people being mistreated because their name matches the meme. I read somewhere that one woman gets asked if she wants to speak to the manager just because her name is Karen.

The rude people you’re talking about aren’t likely to read your appeal. They’re also unlikely to take any instruction from it. What we need is to add critical thinking and empathy instruction into EARLY education. Parents won’t do it? Then society must.

“The squeaky wheel gets oiled” has always annoyed me, as I know from experience that people will exploit it just to get something for nothing. I’ve had much better luck with “you can kill more flies with honey than you can with vinegar”. If I have to make a request or lodge a complaint, I remain polite, calm, and respectful of the employee (and fellow human being) I’m talking to. I’ve worked in enough customer service jobs to know each level has a limit to what they can authorize. So I let the person at each level I end up talking to know I’m aware of that, and that it’s absolutely no reflection on their efforts to help me, before asking to go up to the next level—-even if I end up taking it all the way up to the owner! Once in a rare while I come across someone who is awful at customer service, so I may have to be a bit stern, but still polite. In general though, I find I get faster and more courteous service—-and a more satisfactory solution to my problem—-with honey instead of vinegar.

I admire my son who can be quickwitted too. His father came home one frigid cold night on the due date of our 3rd child and said" honey we can't have the baby tonight,it's too cold out" our son looks up and told him "dad , you have the baby at the hospital not outside" that had him backpedalng for sure. As it was, she came a week later-at the hospital.

So all you have to do in order to become a "writer" for BoredPanda is to go on a subreddit and just copy-paste somebody's personal story, put your name on it and call it an article? Wait, no, I just scrolled up. It took two "writers" to put this together and a third person to add the screenshots (i.e. the entire content). Modern journalism, people, right here!

If someone can't be civil and ask politely, they deserve all the grief that can be heaped upon them. It's astonishing the level of service I receive by being as polite as possible and grateful for the attention I receive. I believe it's called "Doing unto others…" If I encounter a surly worker, I usually say, "I hope everything works out," and leave them alone.

I guess just saying "sorry, I don't work here" might have bypassed all the unpleasantness. Kind of unnecessary just to get a rise out of someone. I prefer to stay in my own lane and not create chaos. There's enough of that right now.

Unfortunately sometimes saying "I don't work here" makes matters worse. Customers either a) Will argue and scream at the other customer that they're lying. B) Threaten to get them fired if they don't help and for them to get the manager. Or c) They have to be escorted out because they don't believe the manager either. I worked in customer service and I've seen this happen it's ridiculous.

Si : This is not about shaming women or men. It's about being rude in public. Do you honestly think this all would have happened if she had politely came over to him and said something like "Excuse me sir, do you work here?" He would have politely told her he did not and maybe even suggested where she could find an employee on the floor.

I was at PetSmart after being at the gym. Normally I wear leggings and a tshirt to workout, and then in public I cover with grey sweat pants and a jacket. PetSmart employees wear khakis and blue shirts. On this particular day I was knelt down in the grooming aisle, deciding what brush to use on my dog who was shedding. This woman walked up with her kid and initiated the Exchange: Her: "Excuse me, I need help." Me: (visibly confused) "Uh What?" Her: *exasperated* "I need you over by the fish- my son wants to pick some out." I stood up, pointed to my sweats, said "I can't help you." Her: *getting*angry* "It's not like you're doing anything important. I need help, I've been waiting!" Me: I'M IN SWEATPANTS. I DON'T WORK HERE. Her: "Well that's no excuse for being rude. Where's the manager??" Me: "What part of that did you not understand? I can't help you!" Her: "That was uncalled for." *storms*off* Because clearly in this exchange I was the rude one...

I plan to do stuff like this from now on in any shop where I do not work. I cannot do it in the shop where I currently work for obvious reasons....but retail workers of the world should have each other's backs. I will mouth off to bad customers for them, and I imagine most of them can/would/will do the same for me.

There are moments in my life that you laugh at in a sitcom, but never believe, and I have related a number of these to friends in the past. There have even been a time or two that a friend has witnessed and I have pointed out to them that 'this is one of those moments'. I really think we should stop calling people like this Karen's, because it's not fair in those who just happen to be called that. It's a stupid meme that's got out of hand. having worked in retail for way too long, to fund my way through highschool & university.... I've actually SEEN people do this stuff to those irate idiots who think the entire store should stop for them. ie staff be polite, and answer the *actual* question, as opposed to make assumptions on the idiot-customer's behalf. It's when customers walk in with the "you're all idiots, so I'm now the boss" attitude, we, as staff, respond with the "I know what you are MEANING to say, but who am I to question your 'expertise', so I'll just answer your questions, even though they're the wrong questions". Done it myself a couple of times - but never to this level of briliance. ;) (p.s. staff never 'broke' any rules in their replies. Were never rude. Staff simply 'trusted' that the client's 'expertise' was accurate.....)

Welcome to my life. I am a large fellow so Khaki Cargo pants and Polo Shirts are my Goto for Casual and Office attire on weekdays. Occasionally I will find myself in a store where someone fails to notice the shirt and only sees the Pants and assume I am staff, I have had variations of the OPs exchange many times, but NEVER to this degree.

I cannot do it in the shop where I currently work for obvious reasons....but retail workers of the world should have each other's backs. There are moments in my life that you laugh at in a sitcom, but never believe, and I have related a number of these to friends in the past. There have even been a time or two that a friend has witnessed and I have pointed out to them that 'this is one of those moments'. This guy took that as a challenge and rendered 'hold my beer' entirely moot. Well done, Sir.

I really think we should stop calling people like this Karen's, because it's not fair in those who just happen to be called that. It's a stupid meme that's got out of hand. This guy handled this situation brilliantly however. The what have you done response was my mother's go to when we said that as children. It always makes me smile that most people don't get it.

I wonder if Code 4 means Entitled Karen or Swearing and Shouting Customer?

Maybe they should change "Code 4" to "Karen". Shorter and more precise.

I really wanted to enjoy this article, but the words, "This is fake", kept repeating in my head. There's no way he'd recall the entire conversation, nor would he have delivered every one of those lines. I honestly tried to enjoy it, but couldn't.

Absolutely made up. A conversation like that would never last that long.

No... It really isn't. It's just 99% of all Karens. Most women don't throw a fit and cuss out a dude for playing dumb.

This reeks of a highly embellished, 'photoshopped' conversation-- like someone living out their 'Karin' fantasy.

having worked in retail for way too long, to fund my way through highschool & university....

This guy sounds like jerk. Sure, she's a terrible human being, but first, he suggests he does this kind of thing to his wife, second he created a scene and now this poor manager had to diffuse it.

No, SHE created the scene. And he said he uses that EXAMPLE with his wife, not that he does the whole scenario with her. Reading comprehension is important.
