A great wildlife photograph can make it seem like the photographer was standing right next to a leopard or just a few feet away from a herd of elephants. But what does the scene actually look like from behind the camera? As it turns out, the difference can be pretty surprising. We’ve previously featured wildlife photographer Harman Singh Heer on Bored Panda, showcasing his impressive animal portraits. This time, however, we’re looking at his photography from a completely different perspective, thanks to his fascinating “What I See Vs. What I Take” comparisons.

Based in Perth, Western Australia, Harman specializes in wildlife photography and photographic safaris. His portfolio features everything from powerful big cats and massive elephants to giraffes silhouetted against spectacular sunsets. In this particular series, Harman shares two sides of the same encounter. First, there’s the wider view of the scene in front of him, where an animal might appear as little more than a speck in the distance or be almost completely hidden among the branches of a tree. Then comes the final photograph, where that same animal suddenly fills the frame, revealing details and expressions that were difficult to make out in the original view. Looking at these side-by-side comparisons, it’s interesting to see just how much a photographer’s choices can influence the final image. The right framing can turn a distant encounter into an intimate portrait, while carefully chosen angles, natural lighting, and timing can make an already impressive subject look even more striking.

Scroll down to see this unique contrast between perspective and final product, and let us know which of these before-and-after comparisons surprised you the most.
