I see nothing wrong with this. It sounds like they were generally supportive of the LibDems but didn't like the direction they were going in, so became more involved in the party itself. Maybe more people should do it?

Chris Benoit. A truly shocking story of decades steroid abüse combined with serious damage to his brain. What he did was unforgivable but what he was suffering from at the time would likely have been preventable if brain scans were more widely used and medical requirements were stricter.
