Money does not buy happiness. But it buys stability, security, living expenses, liesure time and the ocassional luxury. A person is more able to fulfill his or her dreams and goals if those are covered. You can explore a passtime, dwell on a hobby, travel or simply stop to enjoy life...

Money doesn't buy happiness, but it can facilitate it. When you have enough money to cover your bills and a bit left over to save, it's one less thing to worry about. The expression is more to do with excessive wealth.

happiness =/= fulfillment though. you can be happy, but rarely are people with money ever actually satisfied. rich folk still kill themselves all the time. I think some make it to the top and realize that what they spent their whole life chasing after wasn't actually worth it.

She had 3rd degree burns so bad that they didn't know if she'd survive. She needed skin grafts. Imagine taking something out of the oven and putting it on your legs. McDonald's had over 700 complaints/ injuries up to that point about the coffee being too hot. McDonald's had their coffee at 160°-180°. She wasn't drinking. She was the passenger and her grandson was parked so she could add cream and sugar to her coffee. The people that were making fun of this case changed their minds when they saw pictures of her injuries

I've always been perplexed by this event. She took procession of the hot drink and opened it herself. In order for it to have little risk of burns the coffee would have to be so cool most coffee drinkers would not accept it. Many foods come hot and might be a risk if you spill them on yourself. Yes, I know she wasn't the driver and the car wasn't in motion; still spilled it on herself. I'm sorry for the injuries and how McDonald's treated her but I don't place liability on the company for the injury.

30 False Facts That Are So Ingrained In People’s Minds They Can’t See The Truth, As Shared Online People love to talk about how pandas are incapable of surviving, and so evolutionarily incompetent that they need to be goaded into even reproducing. In fact, pandas are very highly specialized and adapted to an ecological niche that was never under threat until human intervention. They're grazers in bamboo forests, which used to be an enormous biome, and their behavioral issues in captivity are just a result of not having access to even a reasonable approximation of that biome. They evolved to be picky about food because they evolved surrounded on all sides by food and adapted to extract the best food efficiently, instead of clear-cutting their environment to get worse food. They evolved to patrol enormous territories because they evolved surrounded by endless usable habitat in all directions. It's not their fault that animals act weird when transplanted from their homes.

30 False Facts That Are So Ingrained In People’s Minds They Can’t See The Truth, As Shared Online As a dietitian, it drives me nuts when people say that iceberg lettuce is devoid of nutrition. A typical serving of 100 grams provides 17% of your daily Vitamin A and 20% of your Vitamin K requirements, all for just 14 calories. Plus, it's a good source of potassium, manganese, and fiber. So, it’s far from being “just water.” There's definitely nutritional value there.

In reality, both humans’ and dogs’ mouths are full of many different species of microbes (at least 600 each), and comparing them is akin to apples and oranges.

Trickle down economics basic idea is that if Jeff bozos orders a yacht, he pays a company to build it, that company has employees who then buy groceries at the store which is how the groceries store pays its employees. Back to the yacht building company they need materials so they purchase wood from a lumber mill they have employees, they get raw wood from lumberjacks that get paid with the money from the yacht company. I hope this makes some since, the problem with this is the chokepoints at the CEOs, they stop alot of the money from trickling down.

Downvoted for stating facts on a "false fact" thread. I feel sooo subversive! Here's something from Britannica: "supply-side economics, also called trickle-down economics, [is a] theory that focuses on influencing the supply of labour and goods, using tax cuts and benefit cuts as incentives to work and produce goods. It was expounded by the U.S. economist Arthur Laffer (b. 1940) and implemented by Pres. Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Supporters point to the economic growth of the 1980s as proof of its efficacy; detractors point to the massive federal deficits and speculation that accompanied that growth.

Has anybody in the past 75 years EVER actually thought that a cold was literally caused by being in the cold? When they say they caught a cold from being outside, wasn't that always just a shorthand for "I caught a cold that I otherwise might not have, because being in the cold made me more susceptible"? I've heard people say it, and every single one understands about viruses and knows being in the cold doesn't directly cause a cold.

So, this basically reduces the whole conflict to being the answer to a Trivial Pursuit question. Slavery was indeed a primary reason but for the south it was one more of economics than morality. If slavery had been the sole reason, then the North would have been wise to jet let the South go. Pressure to be recognized as a legitimate sovereign nation, especially by European countries would have eventually led the Confederacy to free the slaves themselves. With that issue no longer standing in the way both sides would have come to the conclusion that they should reunite. The problem with this scenario is that it doesn't take into account other factors such as the North's economic domination of the South and States' rights. Please don't trivialize this terrible chapter in American history by saying it was about one thing and one thing only. That's just an insult to the memories of those that fought and died on both sides of the conflict.

From someone living in the south with a lot of these people hanging around, the biggest excuse is "it was over states' rights!" My answer: states' rights to do what, exactly? Because slavery is the answer. Sure, states rights was a factor, but it was a factor because they wanted to use every angle, including taxes, tariffs, exports, and states' rights to keep slavery.

    Johnnynatfan

It was about states rights. Specifically southern states right to keep slaves and a good portion of the soldiers who fought for the confederacy were traitors to the United States. Traitors should not get statues celebrating them.

Slavery was a state right, it wasn't addressed in the constitution so it goes to the states, like what happened with abortion, the federal government said no more slavery (hooray), but it still overstepped its rights as the government. So that's the reason for the Civil War it was for state rights, slavery was just the main reason for that conversation.

From Georgia's Declaration of Succession:" “For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery." The ownership of human beings as chattle was absolutely the reason for succession. It was dressed up a state's rights.

Cotton. The south had cotton and slavery. It made cotton a profitable business. If the slaves were freed (or paid), the industry would make much less money selling it. The English didn’t want to pay more for cotton, so they were helping the Confederacy to keep cotton cheaper. Money, money, money, it’s always about money.

Some Southern slave states - Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Deleware - did not join the Confederacy, and so slavery remained legat there until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in late 1865. But they were still Southern states. By 1804, slavery had been outlawed in every Northern state, and most long before that.

Yes it was but it wasn't single dimensional. There was friction between the north and the south that had nothing to do with slavery. Saying this is not being an "apologist". Many in the North didn't care one bit about slavery.

One of the main culprits here is confirmation bias. It causes people to seek, favor, and remember information in a way that would confirm their preexisting beliefs.

However, the list of cognitive biases significantly affecting our information use doesn’t stop here. For instance, we tend to act without fully understanding the information in front of us, reacting to and forming opinions based on the attention-grabbing titles and not reading the article they’re connected to.

Yes less people lived to what many consider old age by today's standards. But the reason they did is because there was a lot more you could die from years and years ago that we can now treat. People also fail to describe what "in the past" means too. Average mortality rate does fluctuate and is certainly higher now than it has been at times in the past, but a lot of that has to to with more modern medicine and the whole "when we know better, we do better". People by and large, today, have a greater potential to live longer than their great great great + ancestors did, because they have access to things those ancestors didn't, including knowledge.(whether or not we all properly utilize, or can, that access and knowledge). It's not a "false fact", just a poorly explained one, and the "age 30" is exaggerated. Provided one didn't run into medical issues, or people with heinous motives, even great great great + ancestors could get "old". But less of them did, and there were less people overall.

Popularity is another strong factor that causes something known as the “bandwagon effect.” In other words, when people see that a lot of fellow users like and support something, they’re more likely to do it, too.

When we see something shared and reacted to very many times, we might assume that someone else must’ve verified it before for it to get so popular, and thus, we focus way less on assessing this information.

well I think OP means between coworkers. The false information exists because generally employees are not paid based on their worth, and it would be a HR nightmare if everyone knew each others salary

As many could guess, falling for fake news can just as well be accredited to political views and alignments. People are prone to more readily accept information that positively correlates with their political ideology and reject news opposing it.

And lastly, misinformation is notoriously sticky, and it’s difficult to undo the effect that false news leaves. According to the article, our memory is not very good at differentiating between a truth and a lie. When it comes to remembering something, we sometimes tend to assume that information was correct, regardless of whether it was false and whether it was later corrected.

It makes a lot more sense when you distinguish between the way corporations are using it and the rather more salient lesson from the Myers Briggs fad that other people have different personalities, needs and preferences than you and you can’t always make assumptions about others based on what YOU prefer.

The tests you currently find online usually go a bit beyond the original Myers Briggs. Does anyone know how much these advancements tackle the criticism of the test? I found it a great exercise and very eye opening. My result fit very well, those of team colleagues couldn't have been further from my personality. Hence the astrology analogy doesn't really fit (where you just read into it what you want) Any such exercise can be really healthy, if used to trigger self reflection. But of course is utterly useless to judge others.

It's a benchmark and it's valuable to have one! Because 1 liter is just not enough (for normal activity). And 5-6 liters should probably come with heat and exercise. Drinking too little is the much bigger issue. Especially because a lot of folks mistake thirst for hunger (or craving for sweets)

This isn't necessarily true. I'm not into the stuff but different plants and herbs and things have compounds that do actually help certain things. Turmeric for example is a great anti-inflammatory and if u have a toothache and can handle chewing on a clove it will absolutely numb it. Alot of supplements and medicines are derived from these compounds found in nature and they just use the simplest form to produce medicines from. It shouldn't be the only option for medical treatments for sure but it can be used for simple everyday aches pains and such if you actually know what works

Herd of bison wouldn't let a calf back in after a tourist helped it out of a ditch this year in Yellowstone. Tourist could be charged a fined. Calf was euthanized. There is truth to this one. https://www.npr.org/2023/05/24/1177857710/bison-calf-yellowstone-man

It is true for some mammals, because mammals depend a lot on smell. It is not true for birds, since they have very weak senses of smell and do not rely on smell to identify their young.

This actually does happen. Source, I co-founded a rabbit rescue and had to bottle feed too many newborns after the mom rejected them once they were touched by human hands....not all, but a lot. I also worked for an animal shelter and yes it happens there with kittens and puppies as well.

It's a very valuable and correct rule. Because there are much much more idiots touching wildlife for no good reason whatsoever than folks who are educated enough to correctly identify if wildlife is in need for help and then able to give proper help. don't touch wildlife! don't feed wildlife! (unless you educated yourself (facts not opinion!) and know what you are doing)

Especially birds! Most songbirds don't have that great a sense of smell (if any at all). If you find a baby bird, put it back in the nest if you possibly can.

It's not true if u see a fallen baby bird u should always try and out it back in the nest. I've seen baby deer dropped from mothers in a panic run and they just get picked up and moved to a safer spot where mama can come back to get them. It's more u don't want to spend a lot of time with a baby animal because they can attach themselves to u instead of their mother and that can be a problem but simply moving one out of harms way will not make the parents reject it.

30 False Facts That Are So Ingrained In People’s Minds They Can’t See The Truth, As Shared Online That one anecdote that every paranoid snake-hater doles out about that pet python who stopped eating and would sleep in the bed with its owner. Supposedly "sizing her up" and "making room" to eat her. Snakes aren't that smart. They're opportunistic predators, they don't really plan ahead. Could you imagine a python sliding up next to an antelope and calmly trying to compare measurements? Besides, the most common pet snakes are too small to eat a full grown human anyway. (They can definitely squeeze one to death on accident, so you should never handle a large snake alone, but they won't try to eat you afterwards.)

My largest before I had to re-home them was Wilma (16 foot reticulated python-het albino) she was a total sweetheart with me but not my GF at the time. I couldn't imagine her going after me but I was always safe rather than sorry.

One only pays the higher tax rate on the additional income. Unless you're getting some means-tested benefits, the amount you pay in income tax will not bring your take-home down. You do not lose more of the income in the lower tax bracket, just a higher proportion of the additional income.

In The Holy Quran, Bees were mentioned; Verse 68: And your Lord inspired the bee [saying]: ‘Make your home in the mountains, and on the trees and the trellises that they erect. Verse 69: Then eat from every [kind of] fruit and follow meekly the ways of your Lord.’ There issues from its belly a juice of diverse hues, in which there is a cure for the people. There is indeed a sign in that for a people who reflect.
