Staying optimistic helps us deal with whatever storms might come our way and reduces the negative effects of stress. So you don’t have to smile if you don’t feel like it—all it takes is some hope. However, hope and optimism aren't the same thing, as psychologist, priest, and published author Dr. Fraser Watts told Bored Panda. Scroll down for our interview with him.

Today Oliver Stopped Me Dead In His Tracks And Turned Back Around To See This Picture That He Spotted! He Just Stared At It In Awe

He recognized another boy like him, smiling and laughing on a display at Target. Oliver sees kids every day, but he never gets to see kids like him. This was amazing! I am so happy that other kids that pass through here with their parents, will see this! There is a lot of focus on representing diversity, but representing people with disabilities is just as important

I have always agreed that bringing a variety of models to advertising helps us to be more accepting. But until I saw this image, I know now that I didn't truly understand the power behind actually doing this. This really gives it a whole new perspective to those able-bodied like myself who just can't simply understand what this means to those it actually affects.

Representation matters. I have a disability/am disabled and growing up I saw very few people on television and in magazines like me. And what I did see was that we were to be pitied and helped because we were "helpless" (ugh). Seeing how the world has changed for young people is heartening.

This would work for adults in wheelchairs too. Dark skinned mannikins are showing up in stores but for people in wheelchairs, there is no positive advertising. I'm wheelchair-bound and would love an idea of how a garment might look on me; let diversity reign!

This is awesome! As an able bodied person many of us don’t notice how different and sometimes harder the world around us is for disabled people. There’s a park near our house that has a swing for disabled children to use. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen one like that. It’s nice that they have that, more parks should.

when i was little the school park near me had installed a swing for disabled kids (big, had a roller coaster style safety lock thing on it) and now in the same park theres a swing for wheelchairs and in the community park that just got redone they added a sort of community exercise area which has a lot of equipment for wheelchair bound people to use. it got finished at the beginning of this year but got closed due to corona soon after and i havent gotten the chance to use it yet 😪

I do have a father, a good one in general speaking, but when it comes to work with tools and repair my stuff, we'd rather get it done by himself instead of teach me, 'cause I'm s woman, and I it's "dangerous play with tools". Man, I had to learnt it all by myself, which meant I committed a lotta actually dangerous mistakes, but fortunately I eventually learnt a lot about repairing stuff around the house thanks to a good friend of mine 😁

My dad had the same opinion for the 22 years I've lived. He was diagnosed with gastric cancer last year and I had to fight him to teach me once and for all because he was getting too weak to mow the lawn, etc. He kept saying "I'll have a man to do it" once I get married. I had to keep telling him I'm planning on being alone, with no man, no marriage. I need to know these things. There's still a lot I have to catch up on, but I've learned a lot this year from my pops. I'm definitely going to subscribe to this guy though.

According to Dr. Watts, optimism and hope aren't the same thing. "First, I need to make a distinction between hope and optimism, as Terry Eagleton does in his 2015 book called 'Hope without Optimism.' Optimism is more a matter of prediction. Hope is more a matter of attitude," Dr. Watts explained the difference between the two.

"In the present situation, I don't think there are any good grounds for optimism, and to be optimistic would be a retreat into a fantasy world," he pointed out. "However, even in present circumstances, it is possible and really helpful to maintain a positive, hopeful attitude."

Unfortunately, there's is no single surefire way of keeping that hope alive when things are tough. "Practice helps. It depends on a long process of cultivating a positive mindset. It is useful to be clear that hope does not depend on believing that everything is going to be fine. It is more an act of will."

Even though most people don't distinguish between hope on the one hand and optimism on the other, the internet is full of advice on how to keep your spirits up even if things seem incredibly challenging. One of the ways to stay optimistic even when times are incredibly tough is sitting down and thinking about all the things that you’re grateful for having. Gratitude journals can help out with this, even though they might sound cheesy.

There are other ways to maintain your optimism, too. For example, Select Health stresses that taking care of yourself is vital when things are hard. That means exercising, getting plenty of rest, setting time aside for your hobbies.

And, yes, that even means treating yourself from time to time: whether it’s sinking into a hot bath after a long week at work or sneaking in an hour of video gaming in between doing homework (we won’t tell if you won’t). When you do what you love without guilt or shame, suddenly the world feels brighter, doesn’t it? As long as you don't overindulge, of course.

Sadio Mane, The Liverpool Star Earning Approximately $10.2M Per Year Has Given The World A Lesson In Modesty After Some Fans Spotted Him Carrying A Cracked iPhone

    His response is legendary:
“Why would I want 10 Ferraris, 20 diamond watches and 2 jet planes? What would that do for the world? I starved, I worked in the fields, I played barefoot, and I didn’t go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. I have built schools & a stadium; we provide clothes, shoes, and food for people in extreme poverty. I give 70 euros per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips, and even planes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me,” Mane said.

And just a mention for another very wealthy footballer, Marcus Rashford (£10.4 million per year salary) who started a concerted Twitter campaign that actually forced the UK government to U-turn over their refusal to provide Covid- support food vouchers for some of England’s poorest families over the school holidays. He tweeted "Just look at what we can do when we come together. This is England in 2020". Good man.

In a week where professional footballers have not exactly covered themselves in glory this is a wonderful example of how not all professional sportspeople have to be behave like animals. There are many more like Mane, but they don't shout it from the rooftops. They do it because they want to help and not to improve their own reputation. Well done Mr. Mane, a fine example to us all.

awww my son did that once too but no food was involved he was in a rage match in COD and I walked by to go to bed and threw up the I love you sign so I wouldn't disturb him and he was like "Love you too momma good night" and his friends gave him c**p and he was said almost the same thing, "It's not my fault you don't love your moms" And the crowd grew silent and I slept like a baby.

I feel this comment so hard. My son has been gaming with two different groups for quite a long time now, 7 years, I guess. One local, and one international. They know who I am. I say hi to them when I walk in his room. They hear us make jokes. They hear him say 'thank you, love you' when I bring him in a snack. I don't think they've ever laughed at him. They started saying hi back and I then I heard, 'Your mom is so cool.' So, that was new.

I used to see people going in trash dumpsters for food, on the security cameras when I worked in Security. Its shocking that restaurants throw out so much food, but they are not allowed to give it away because of health codes. This is a good person to do this for those who are hungry. I hope they take him up on it. It can be humiliating for many people to ask for help.

I worked the breakfast shift in a fancy 4 star hotel a few years ago. After bfast we would often have food left over that we were allowed to take home or it would be thrown out (can't use it the next day due to food regulations). I would fill take away containers and walk around the city centre giving it to homeless people. One of my co-workers caught me, thought it was a great idea and spoke to our boss about starting a program that's still going today. They get bacon and eggs, baked beans, fruit salad, sausages, coffee & tea, pasties, sandwiches. Its amazing.

Nurse here. Had a coma patient for over half a year with high brain damages. Nobody ever thought her to wake up again. But she did. She remembered so many little details. Who likes who, who uses her electrical brush or the manual brush to clean her teeth. What my brothers name was etc.. Will never ever forget her saying her first Good Morning and making me almost poo myself. I am honored I witnessed this 'miracle'

It's true, I was in a coma and then in and out of consciousness for approx 6 weeks. I knew what was going on around me, even though sometimes it took me an hour or two to figure what was real and what was imagined. I heard the nurses gossip, my mother and father visiting, and everything around me. When they put ice around me during a fever I was hallucinating that I was elsewhere when suddenly I was surrounded by bags of ice etc. I still vividly remember much of this three years later.

I had my cousins hold the phone up to my aunt's ear while she was unconscious and dying in a hospital room, thousands of miles from me. She was my soulmate and kindred spirit. I told her that her love for me saved my life, and that I would carry that love forever in my heart. I told her how much she meant to me, and how I was going to miss her. I gave a eulogy at her funeral. The night of funeral, I looked up in the sky and saw a shooting star. I hope it was her, saying goodbye.

I'm amazed any of us are born. Just making it to the womb, waiting for that one sperm to put swim or outfox the other competitors. And just when we feel at home, we are squeezed out of the darkness, aided by the weirdest salad tongs, get whacked on our bums, and have big heads speaking a language we are totally unfamiliar with. And just when we think we got it all figured out, we realize we don't. Our warranty is only good for so long. Newer models are added along the way. Life is an endless series of pop quizzes and we must get a passing score or we never can proceed to the next level. And I am truly awe struck by those who fight to grab every minute they can in the struggle. Whether here for a moment, or here for the long haul, each one of us is unique, our presence changes what was 10 minutes ago into a whole new ball game.

Dr. Mohamed Mashali Was A Well-Known Doctor Based In The Northern Egypt. He Was Awarded With The Title “Doctor Of The Poor” For Serving His Community For Over 50 Years

Mohammed Mashali once found a child that suffered from diabetes and needed insulin shot but couldn't afford them, so he asked his mother to buy him some. Sadly his mother could not afford them either and the child passed away. After this, he moved to one of the poorest countries and began treating medical patients free of charge. He passed away on July 28, 2020. Days before his death he was still helping everyone he could

This picture is heart breaking...why hasn't anyone given this selfless doctor permission to care for his health and take care of himself too...he looks malnourished and poorer than the poor people he has treated...this is reflected in his outward health, clothing and attire...sad that he couldn't retire even days before his own death and felt obligated to care for others and neglect himself... :( And being surrounded by poor people all the time must have taken a toll on him because all that empathy probably made him feel guilty about self indulgence...how can people like this picture and not feel sorry for the selfless doctor who probably lived as miserable of a life as the patients he treated..

My first dog was a sweetheart after his death I adopted a lost soul, a French bulldog, and he is very aggressive and tries to kill smaller animals and killed one hedgehog. I can't help but wish he was kinder, I try hard to discipline(no beating) but he's so angry. I guess that's what happens when you've been abused as a baby. This is a dog now imagine people? If someone is angry and sad don't be quick to judge and count your blessings ♥️

I have a troubled rescue dog. All you can do is love them, train them as best you can and keep them safe and others safe from them. It's so sad but it's not their fault. They are still so deserving of love and protection. Bless you for taking on this unhappy boy and making his life better.

Dogs chase things that run. If the squirrels didn't run she'd probably not harm them either. I remember a lady telling me that a confused squirrel that fell our of a tree didn't run from her dog and neither animal knew what to do. Your dog is obviously a very good girl!

I think he put he is a Christian because he is probably proud of what Christianity has taught him. To give without expecting anything in return and doing so with a happy heart. Not to say that non-Christians aren't capable of doing the same thing, but Christians usually like to praise Jesus whenever possible so he stated it as so. It obviously has everything to do with religion for Dan or he wouldn't have stated it the way he did.

I might be confused, but trying to see the best in people here - maybe Russian Otaku meant that they hope she's not American because of how much all of the surgery would cost? (Due to the lack of healthcare system) - for example, in America that may have costed hundreds of thousands of dollars, whilst here in the UK it would all be free. (Payed for automatically out of our regular taxes) I hope that's what they meant, who knows xx

I'm not a grandmother. I'm older than some of the grandma's of students I work with. Hell. I'm older than dirt. I was working with a 2nd or third grade kid one day and for some reason asked him a question in an operatic voice. He sang back to he didn't know. Then he said we were going to get along just fine because I was as weird as he was. We had a good time learning together.

It has nothing to do with spirit and everything to do with statistics. Doctors give people the current stats; they don’t look into crystal balls and then lie to you.

My nephew was the same, didn't speak a word until he was nearly 4. He didn't need to--my niece (2 years older) always did the talking for him.

My little fella doesn’t speak. He has Down syndrome and is 11. But he can sign very well when he signed love you spontaneously. That was amazing. They understand so much more then they can communicate sometimes xx

My son was very ill the first few months of his life. At a year he only weighed 13 pounds and could not sit. At 17 months he spoke for the first time - a complete sentence. He is now a chief cyber security analyst for the government. All children develop at their own pace.

My Dad didn't speak for years but wasn't tested for autism until he was in his 50's. He is the best Dad ever. I see my friends Dads and am so thankful for my Dad. He passed earlier this year and it has left a huge hole in our family.

There is still hope! My younger daughter didn't speak understandably until she was around 3. She would chatter quite happily in her own language but very few things could be distinguished. You can't shut her up now!

Yes, and also the amount of pain she can withstand. Scar tissue hurts SO much to have tattooed. I'm quite inked and I'm an excellent sitter (talked and laughed through getting the top of my food done), but having my scoliosis surgery scar tattooed hurt like nothing I'd ever felt before. I had asked my tattoo artist/friend beforehand, and he said it would hurt less. When we were done, I asked him if I was just weird and he said, "Oh no, scar tissue hurts way more, but I knew how badly and how long you've wanted this and I wasn't about to let you psych yourself out of it."

... and ... on top of all else - this shows that technological progress is a key to a more kind, more caring and less s****y world. Like a million less visible times, that often are used every day (put short - without a lot of technology we wouldn't have any real rights, maybe on paper, but not executable).

There was a group that brought around lions, a tiger and bears for people to see (and feed with dog kibble). I thought it was the saddest thing I'd ever seen in my life because they were all in tiny cages that had poo everywhere and they would just either lay in the poo or pace back and forth as best they could. It was pretty evident that they were extremely stressed out. Fortunately they made it illegal to even own animals like that where I live.

I've seen a few posts like this about the sweetness of kids at skateparks and I want to add one; when my son was little he desperately wanted to skate. All his friends and cousins had boards and it's all he wanted. But, he had Perthes disease and even a little bump could have resulted in an operation and years of recovery. So no skating. But, he loved to watch the guys at the skatepark. One day he asked if he could go up close. This sweet, shy 6 year old started asking he guys questions and all these teenagers happily answered. I quickly explained the situation so they wouldn't offer to show him how - but they had no issue with it and just kept on showing him tricks and explaining how it all works. You should have seen the look of joy on his face! I'm so grateful to those guys and I wish they could see him now, 12 years later, skating like a pro with all his mates. Best thing is - he is just as gentle and as sweet as they were. Can't tell you how proud I am of him, and them.

Thanks for the backup. Wondered if it would be taken the wrong way. BTW, I've known lots of guys who were shy off their boards but were freakin warriors on. Glad your son's a good boy - skate rats tend to get an unjustly bad rep.

Awwww he clearly remembers it all. Dementia patients often need such stimulation. The past is usually the last thing to go, it’s why a dementia patient will cling on to a toy doll and think it’s their kid. They often won’t recognise your adult self but they remember you as a baby.

Had a neighbour I'd never even seen but used to see her dear old cat sitting on her doorstep almost every morning as I went to work. The cat never left that spot, never wondered out of the garden. Just before last Christmas she knocked on our (and all neighbours') door to ask if we've seen him. Then there were flyers and FB posts announcing he'd gone missing. Soon he was presumed dead. After 7 weeks he was found at the other end of town all hungry and afraid. It made me soooo happy. They moved since but I still "stalk" them on FB to see how Jasper is doing :)

While these dogs are cute, this is incredibly unsafe. You don't know what the traffic will be like ahead of you and may have to stop suddenly. The dogs could potentially hurt themselves. Or, the driver behind you, not paying attention hits you in the back, potentially injuring your dogs. Dogs should be kenneled in an approved kennel, or at the very least a safety-tested seatbelt for dogs.

My high school never permitted either. For years various student and parent bodies were asking for them in bathrooms, got declined every time, even when they would've been free for the school. I could almost understand the reluctance to let the condoms in but tampons?! It's not like it's a choice to menstruate...

Sonja's right, it won't work in U.S. While standing in line to register for M.D. apptmnt, I saw people grab items from counter. When I got to the front desk, I asked what all the commotion was about. I was told the hospital was giving away samples of Vaseline & "everybody took 4 or 5 containers" [each had 8oz]. A container of 100 lasted 5 mins 'cuz this country raises greedheads. Gimme something-for-nothin' demanders, I'm "entitled." Vulgarians.

Neat concept. Might be embarrassing taking these items in full view of all your peers.

A doe will stash her fawns in a safe place while she goes to eat and find water. Young fawns aren't strong enough to keep up with her while she forages. If you see a fawn that looks abandoned, don't touch or move it. Mom will be back to nurse it even after several hours have passed.

It's better to give them plain water in warm months when they are out and about for honey production. Sugar water can contaminate their honey stores.

You should not give bees sugar. Water is the thing.

False. They do eat sugar. My dad was a beekeeper for years. And they need to be fed sugar solution before winter to survive.

I get the cochlear-aid tattoo...how swell to make the kid feel she's not the only disabled one. But what's with the earring? Jewelry has no purpose [except to show off that u can afford gold & gems] & should be abolished. [There's replicas that cost 1/100th of the real thing which most people keep locked in safes anyway. It's elitist, has no function [except to distract], is usually ugly & the $ wasted on it can get electricity for 1/2 the world that doesn't have it...or potable water. That'll display the size of your heart, dad.

Look at that! U see effort?! That's what it's called. I can't get a bunch of CVS staffers & hospital employees to write me a tk-u note/card for buying 'em all two 3-layer masks so they can survive COVID~19 [I even included filters]. Not a one outta 23 [that's 46 masks]. Dad gotta rare heart. This country [U.S.] is teeming with ingrates. I barely know ½ of these vulgarians. Go replace Fauci, grrl!
