For the past few years, the world has been a painful mess. You open the news wishing to find positive things, but the headlines offer only more despair.

However, just because mass media paints a grim picture of our times, that doesn't mean it's all hopeless.

Recently, Redditor ItsTheCess wanted to cheer themselves up and asked: "What are some good things happening in the world right now?" Immediately, people flooded them with wholesome things, and we at Bored Panda believe this post, together with the replies it has received, is exactly what we need to start the week with a smile on our faces.

If You're Tired Of All The Depressing News, These 50 Wholesome Stories Might Just Balance Everything Out I bought a f**k ton of milkweed and wildflowers and got rid of 20% of my grass lawn to make a meadow. Bees are thriving in my lawn. I also successfully seed bombed quite a few places in my area from last year's fall that are BLOOMING this year.

Just make sure you are planting native species of flowers and plants to your area. Beware the invasive species. All hail the bees

It's also fantastic to see local authorities planting wildflower 'meadows' in grassy strips by the roadside. It looks great, and brings in biodiversity.

Thank you! I heard about this the other day in a different forum. These are little things, but if enough of us do them, we CAN make a difference. And/or at least actually see some bees. Biodiversity is critical to getting on track.

My sister and I planted a butterfly garden earlier this year that's thriving. It's mostly lantana at the moment -- those things are huge!

I'm a bit scared of bees, but honeybees/bumblebees are fine! The other day I was in a store, and my sister pointed out a bee on my leg. Instead of freaking out like I usually would I let it crawl on my finger and then took it outside

We managed to get in touch with ItsTheCess and they agreed to have a little chat with us. "I don't remember exactly what I was doing right before I posted it but I can guess the news cycle had been more depressing than normal that day," the Redditor told Bored Panda. "The question itself was almost sarcastic. 'There's so much evil happening in the world right now, is anything good actually going on?' Part of me expected to get downvoted into oblivion and just a few comments saying some variant of 'No.'"

ItsTheCess said the replies really stuck with them. "The fact that literally anyone took the time to give real answers and not just some variant of 'No' meant a lot to me. I particularly enjoyed the answers that pertained to space, such as the JW telescope, or the medical field, such as the new treatments for cancer, because scientific advancement is something I hope to never stop seeing or learning about."

For a year or two, they also gave out free breakfast and lunch, and ln the days before the weekends, they would give out “snack bags”. They were backpacks full of (healthy) snacks. A lot of kids in our community are in poverty and can’t afford a proper meal half the time. Due to cost of food going up, they’re stopping because the school systems can’t afford it anymore

As Pamela Rutledge, director of the California-based Media Psychology Research Center, explains it, our tendency to doomscroll “really just describes the compulsive need to try and get answers when we're afraid." We do have to assess whether new information constitutes a threat. "We are biologically driven to attend to that," Rutledge said.

"Unfortunately, journalism to some degree plays to that tendency,” she added. Provocative headlines and stories draw in readers because they elicit fear and urgency. We tell ourselves, if I know all the latest news, I can better protect myself and my family.

And while this soudns reasonable, most people scroll well past the point of ascertaining any valuable information.

If You're Tired Of All The Depressing News, These 50 Wholesome Stories Might Just Balance Everything Out I was at the Phoenix airport a couple weeks ago. An older gentleman sat next to me at our gate. Both his feet were wrapped in some sort of bandage and he was struggling to get around with a cane. On his other side were a pair of teenagers just giggling over kitten videos on their phones. They were strangers but made sure this man got helped to the restroom, had a drink, carried his bag, got to his seat, had access to a wheelchair when he got off the plane! It was seamlessly selfless. The kids are alright. They really are. I'm 47. I am seeing it around me so often.

A day of scrolling through positive news probably won't erase or counteract the habits we've formed from months or even years of doomscrolling and their negative effects on our mental wellbeing, however, good news do, in fact, bring us joy.

From what they see in the media, ItsTheCess believes publishers should really step up and cover more positive stories. "I know they don't do it because it probably doesn't equal rating or at least they think it doesn't equal ratings. Good things are happening. Good people are out there. People should be aware of that too," the Redditor highlighted.

"That balance is incredibly important to me and I believe it should be important to everyone. All that negativity takes such a toll on the mind; it's not healthy or sustainable," they said.

"[I would like to] remind everyone reading this to be kind to those around you and those who you interact with online. You never know what someone is going through and you don't want to add to it. The only way to get kinder people into the world is to be one," ItsTheCess added.

I just seemed to get into fights with everyone, and couldn’t for the life of me stop myself from being a hothead. Looking back, I don’t give a s**t about what happened to me and I wouldn’t change anything, because all of that showed me how people can manipulate me and how toxic they can be, and now I’ve got some true friends, and even tho the journey was hard, I got there, and so can anyone else.

Best thing I ever did. I recently took in a baby opossum & I needed to use Facebook to go to the OCAR group page (opossum care & rescue) for some advice & it's the first time I logged on in 3 years. I ended up scrolling around a little bit & within 20 minutes I could feel myself getting like... angry or annoyed or just upset at the s**t I was seeing. Whether it was me being annoyed that someone was saying s**t that wasn't true & passing it off as fact. Or all of the posts about animals in need (I run a feral cat program. And small rescue Most of my "friends" are other rescues) or just sad & depressing stories from around the world. I caught myself & I'm like "THIS IS WHY I DONT FUCKEN USE THIS S**T!" Get rid of Facebook yall.

Everyone knew what r Kelly was doing for years. And people would ask why didn't they arrest him, and I always said as soon as Huhn Hefner dies. He died, they arrested r Kelly. They were both the same degenerate, but Hefner shared and kept a book on who we shared with. So they couldn't arrest him so r Kelly was safe until he died.

I think this is not only premature but not actually true. Much of the south is in Russian hands with Ukraine having little access to their coast. On top of this we forget that despite weapons and materiel being given to them they are losing men, their population, every single day. Their army is only at this strength due to heavy conscription so if this goes on for a long time it will devastate their male population. Russia has more men to draw on and could keep this going. I hope to God that it ends SOON. I don't want to see thousands more deaths the way we have seen so far..

depending on what you think of when you hear that Ukraine is beating their a*s. is the war near its end or is the whole territory deoccupied? no. i wrote it under some other comments here, but will say it here too: a 40 mln country is standing against 144 mln country, which also outnumbers it in all kinds of weapon and aviation. The fact that in 6 months they have occupied 'only' 25% (there should be and will be 0%, I truly believe in it) shows how much of 'a*s kicking' Ukrainian army is doing. Here's the link to the map with the territories: https://deepstatemap.live/en#6.75/49.255/33.300 the green areas are the territories that have been deoccupied since Feb 24th.

We're not quite there yet. The ozone layer is most definitely becoming thicker, and we are back to pre-2000 levels. It's estimated that it will take until 2040 to 2070 to fully repair, but we are most definitely headed in the right direction. https://public.wmo.int/en/media/news/ozone-layer-recovery-environmental-success-story

I remember when the campaign on this first began. Those who spoke about it were regarded as fringe conspiracy theorists and openly mocked. That seems to be how it goes for everything. In the case of the ozone layer it wasn't too late. The oil industry have enough money to buy all of the politicians they need throughout the world..

This is completely false. While the ozone is on the mend, it won't be fully repaired until sometime in the 2060's -2070's...unfortunately the NOAA found that the unreported manufacturing of CFC-11, along with the fact that some older appliances and foam insulation continue to emit 10's of thousands of tonnes of CFC-11 a year, nothing is "solved" The hole is on the mend, preventative measures seem to be working, but humanity can still find a way to make it worse.

Progress in treating cancer is incremental. Be suspicious of any stories promising "miracle cures". However: HPV vaccines have reduced the amount of cervical cancers significantly!

Unfortunately I had children before my borderline diagnosis. Not necessarily saying that I wouldn’t have had children because of that, but I would have been far better equipped to handle motherhood. My kids are 13 & 15 now and I cry almost every day thinking that I’ve failed them in so many ways. Good on you for breaking the cycle. Cheers x

If you are North American especially (but other places have then too), check out and let politicians know you support your local Home Visitation program. They support parents of small children break the cycle. It is easier to build a strong foundation than to repair one (although you are always able to repair)

Was physically/emotionally abused by my mother, sexually molested by my godmother. Was told I was "destined" to abuse my daughter. Had an episode when she was 18 months-ish, was TIRED, grabbed her bottle & swung it over, hitting her thigh. BIG bruise, BIG guilt. Was on the phone to a shrink's office first thing in the morning, to PRECLUDE her having my history. My mother told her the story when she was older (trying to make me look bad to her) - daughter would BRAG about her mom stopping the cycle of abuse.

I bought 100 packs of sanitary towels to send out to the Ukraine a few months back. The young man on the checkout said "are these all for you???" I told him what I was doing and went back the next day to buy more, the shelf was empty so I asked staff where they'd all gone....he explained that the young guy and several of his friends had bought the rest that evening and already dropped them at collection point. I think it's great that periods are no longer a taboo subject and have brought my sons up to not be embarrassed by period talk. We ARE moving in the right direction :D

This particular picture is the "Lily Cup One" for anyone interested. I guess it folds down into a little disc for transport, but otherwise the shape may work better for some folks. I find the typical menstrual cup shape to not work so well with my body but have not had the funds to test run some of the shapes I've been interested in trying.

I've been using the Instead softcup for over a decade. While it's not reusable (I use 1 cup per period so, a box lasts over a year) It's just a silicone ring with a plastic sheet/ liner that I find very comfortable and easy to use. I can't use the other kind, so while not the best, It's still a step up from pads and tampons.

Pretty sure I've caught glimpses of (and heard) a couple in my neck of the woods, but as they were high and flying above thick tree cover, I can't be sure. I've definitely seen red tailed hawks and other birds of prey here. There was this one hawk that hung out at the top of this one particular tall tree I passed on my daily commute (walking), so I saw it all the time. There are a lot of owls around here too. They're so quiet though! It's freaky when you suddenly see a black shadow flying over your head without a sound.

If You're Tired Of All The Depressing News, These 50 Wholesome Stories Might Just Balance Everything Out There's a woman (forgot where she lives. I think in Africa) who started collecting plastic waste and compressing all of it into bricks for roads and giving people jobs. Stop using as much plastic as possible in your daily life. One less piece in your home = one less piece that could potentially end up in the ocean. Even though big companies are the biggest offenders, we can all do our part.

As they are working on it for decades without any visible results. There is so much plastic, especially microplastic everywhere it dwarfs all these efforts. It would be nice to have a fleet of special cleaning ships patrolling the oceans, but if we pollute more in a year, they can clean up it's practically worthless. Even worse, it makes people think something is taken care of while really nothing changes. It would take a radically new approach to deal with this mess instead the "street cleaning" method. But what? I don't know.

The reason for this is that safe delivery mechanisms for getting vaccines into the body have been developed and they can be customised to work for new diseases relatively easily. This cuts down the development time significantly. They still have to be rigorously tested.

Mine too. There is a big body of research now into risk factors & protective factors for colorectal cancer. Red meat, in particular that which is processed (like sausages, hot dogs, bacon etc) and that ooked at high temperatures on a Bar-B-Q - is a risk factor so good idea to reduce consumption. Eating fruit & veg and other sources of fibre a protective factor. Originally they thought being overweight was a cause but more recent research indicates it's the balance of bacteria in our gut (an overgrowth of 'bad' bacteria is also linked to be overweight). It's worth looking up microbiome and having a read. Good luck.

This is NOT what it appears. this is a highly flawed "study" of a highly select group of patients hand-picked to be optimized to respond to the therapy ----- and the drug itself is potentiallly lethal if you have a bad reactoin (kidney failure,a nyone?)... Please, take this with many grains of salt, don't think it's okay. Fourteen people? In medical research,t hat is the same as ZERO. Now, 14,000, we'll talk... My own autn was barred from this study, they were incredibly choosy to make sure they got good results.

Yes, strange as it may seem, I see this as a victory both for women and victims everywhere. It's obvious why it's good for victims but this is, at last, a recognition that women can be both the victims and the perpetrators of domestic abuse. Women have been viewed as weak and ineffectual to the extent that it has been considered actually laughable that a man could be physically or mentally abused by a woman. Women are strong mentally and physically, some women abuse others, sometimes men. Men can be victims, we must see them too and it's NOT men vs women. It's us versus perpetrators - or it should be..

Abusive partners can be both male and female but society is still stuck in the idea that the women are always the victims of bad men. Abusers in gay relationships beat their male partners and its not an uncommon issue. That's rarely spoken about. Biased feminism is just as bad as toxic masculinity because it hides truths and twists the narrative.

Yes! Another thing about biased feminism is that trans AFAB people are mostly excluded. The fight over Roe vs Wade in the USA right now? It's only focused on cis women. We need to speak out about transmisandry, too! We should call it humanism or something like that, to not just focus it on cis women, but victim's of every gender! It's not only women's issues, but victim's issues!

Weren't they both pretty equally abusive to each other? I don't think either one of them should really be celebrated. But it is important to note that yes, men can be abused as well.

This is the point for me, and where I'm seeing something hopeful: abuse isn't always one good partner and one bad partner. Sometimes both are abusive to each other, and taking simple either/or sides doesn't help. So anyone can be in an abusive relationship, and all sorts of relationships can be abusive.

If You're Tired Of All The Depressing News, These 50 Wholesome Stories Might Just Balance Everything Out Canada and Greenland (Government of Denmark) have just come to a peaceful resolution of the 38 year territorial dispute over the highly coveted Hans Island, where they've agree to share the island and split it right down the middle. This is of course the famed "Whiskey War". The main aspect of it (swapping schnapps with whiskey or vice versa), I imagine, will remain in some part as a celebrated border-crossing tradition.

As a Canadian, I am hoping we can now join the EU! This NAFTA thing has been mostly OK, but whenever the US oligarchs decide they aren't making enough money for the second mega-yacht, they get their bought men in Warshington to enact tariffs. Which usually are struck down later, but by that time they have killed the industry in Canada.

“Highly coveted” is a bit of an overstatement for a rock in the Arctic Ocean. The island has been a running gag between our 2 countries for decades. The “settlement” was a publicity stunt (I don’t mean that in a negative way) to show Russia what it looks like when countries in a land dispute actually deal with things diplomatically.

If You're Tired Of All The Depressing News, These 50 Wholesome Stories Might Just Balance Everything Out My guava plants produced fruit, I had so many tomatoes that I gave some to the neighbors, gave some to the chickens and ducks, and still had lots left over for salads and sauces. My dog Duffy was a little Bichon who also loved stealing tomatoes. He'd approach the plant very slowly and then very slowly remove a tomato - he was trying to be sneaky. Then he'd turn his back from me and devour it. When he'd face me again, he'd look like he had participated in some sort of massacre and his muzzle would be stained for days.

It's making me so incredibly depressed. My 2 daughters are 20 & 23, and it hurts me so much seeing the rights of women being stripped away, the book bans, the hatred, the violence, the mass shootings, the lack of affordable healthcare and medications, the selfishness and narcissism of CEO's/shareholders to insurance, healthcare, massive corporations and politicians. Not too mention the complete and total lack of empathy SO MANY people have here. I try so hard every day to be kind, & to help as many people as I can, but every day it is getting harder & harder for me to try & fight back against the ugliness.

As things move forward those who are bigoted always try to push back. It was this way when Sex Discrimination Act came in and also the Race Relations Act. We can't imagine a world where you could advertise a job looking only for a white man though. It takes decades but eventually the changes happen (extremely slowly - glacial speed) but that same will happen for Trans Rights. One thing I've always wondered is why we use pronouns at all. I mean I get it if it's medical or a physical description but otherwise why do I need to know that I am delivering pizza to someone with a penis??

I'm really pleased that many people have helped to raise mental health awareness. That can only be a good thing, but we need to start turning that awareness into tangible resources that the psychiatric services so desperately need. Better pay for staff would only lead to better care. I know of one ward which was understaffed last summer to the point that the patients were only allowed outdoors access for three fifteen-minute periods per 24hr day. Whilst awareness is great, it isn't quite enough. For instance, I am aware that I am a terrible singer (as are my family and neighbours) but without a tangible injection of cash so I can take singing lessons, nothing will change and I will continue to howl like a strangled cat. My family and neighbours will continue to be aware that I am making a hellish sound but will be unable to improve their situation either. I suppose that what I'm trying to say is that having more people know that I can't sing doesn't improve my singing.

Do plants grown under artificial light have the same nutrients as those grown under the sun? What are we going to do with all the waste material from solar panels 25 years from now? And what happens when we finish raping the earth of all the materials essential to battery production for those famed EVs? Wouldn't we be better off capturing and converting carbon dioxide into another fuel source (or are we prepared to give up the luxury of flying, or importing goods from elsewhere on the planet ...)?

Sounds good on paper, doesn't it. Is Australia self sufficient, do they import anything? So much for emissions: we're years yet from eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels. Cutting the costs of EVs means subsidizing, and that's a direct cost to taxpayers. Again, sounds good, but the reality is economics; supply and demand.

I actually looked them up and the volunteer work they do is amazing. They either play a well know character from one of the movies or they develop their own Jedi/Sith personas.

Lots of advances have been made with LED technology to the point where indoor grow lights for food are becoming cost effective to operate, especially in colder climates. Previous indoor growing was reserved for cannabis as it had a high dollar to pound yield. Now with high efficiency LEDs, panels that rival 1,000W bulbs only consume around 90W and last for tens of thousands of hours!! Major step towards improving the world hunger situation.

There is no shortage of food in the world. Half the population is overweight or even obese. Tons of food are being thrown away... Proper distribution and speculation is a problem.

That's true on many levels but for remote communities that experience food deserts and insane prices for produce (think parts of Alaska), this could be game changing.

Quantum computing. Just a matter of time they overtake classical computers and the advantages flowing to the masses.

I believe quantum computing absolutely will be amazing, but classical computers are going to stick around for a couple of reasons. 1) quantum and classical computers solve different problems, and 2) we need classical computers to interface with quantum ones.

They spoke about mobile phones for many decades before they became popular and about 60 years before they became 'smart' and really changed our lives. I feel the same could be true for quantum. Probably my grandson will reap the benefits. I fear the rise of AI will also take so many jobs that are 'safe' atm as they are 'creative' I'd like to be wrong but I likely won't be around to see it..

If You're Tired Of All The Depressing News, These 50 Wholesome Stories Might Just Balance Everything Out https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/02/world/global-poverty-united-nations.html World poverty is half what it was in 1990 and still dropping. Inequality has increased but it's increased in the other direction (rich getting richer). That's pretty awesome and doesn't get talked about at all

When I was growing up in the 90s "food bank" was a phrase that we'd never heard. Now every town in the UK has one.

If You're Tired Of All The Depressing News, These 50 Wholesome Stories Might Just Balance Everything Out Well, SCOTUS is actually relinquishing some federal power. That’s something I don’t think anyone really expected.

I don’t think an extremist, power grabbing SCOTUS (Supreme Court Of The United States) acting as an arm of the Republican party (Trump) shifting control to the states to eliminate abortion care and contraceptive choices/rights, in addition to forcing their other views on the MAJORITY of Americans qualifies as, “Good Things Happening In The World Right Now”. The founding fathers of the nation would not approve of the way they are defiling democracy.

Having Supreme court appointments based on their bias, and not based on their impartiality, is the most ridiculous way to run a justice system. US constitution needs serious reform.

It’s good that the SCOTUS interprets the U.S. Constitution as the founding fathers had written it.
