I think the thing is that, in this case, these men had enough money and power to just make it go away, and the people that support them largely don't care about that stuff anyway. For those who don't have that money and power, accusations can ruin a life, but the way to solve that is to ensure that every accusation is correctly followed up on and necessary prosecutions made. Just saying "don't accuse" absolutely does not help, in fact it makes things worse.

EDIT: Since some people seem to have an issue of me only commenting on the gun part and not mentioning anything about domestic violence, well here is my stance. ANYONE who is a perpetrator of domestic violence deserve to be punished. The court system is an absolute joke in protecting victims and things need to change NOW. Too many people are dying at the hands of their "loved one" and something should have been done years ago. We keep hearing about perpetrators facing tougher punishments but it is yet to be seen. It is all talk and no action. And judges/parole board need to be held accountable for releasing repeat offenders. If the reoffender ends up killing someone, the judge/parole board have blood on their hands. Hopefully that satisfies some of you.

To the know it all who made a comment about nurse’s salaries, I use to work in collections for auto loans. A lot of nurses defaulted on their payments. I know this might come as a surprise but people, nurses have other bills to pay, many have children, and many are single mothers. Just because someone is a nurse doesn’t automatically equal wealthy.
