I ask this because I saw someone do something that saved a life, and there are only 3 people in the whole world who even know it happened (story below). It made me think of those online personalities who like to film themselves doing nice things for social media cred, or maybe awareness, or whatever reason. Regardless of how you feel about that, I have to wonder how much altruism really goes unacknowledged in the world. It's nice to think about when the bad news of the world gets you down.

Look for the helpers!

I have personally saved 3 lives and received credit for one, arrested for one, and shouted at for the other.
A kid ran out in front of a tram, I jumped forwards and pulled him out of the way. His mother shouted at me 'Don't you ever touch my child, how DARE you!'
I saw a man literally kicking a woman's head in. I kicked the s**t out of him, called an ambulance and the police. Spent the night in a cell for assaulting the man. Worst part is, it happened when I was on my way to celebrate my girlfriends birthday (now wife).
I saw a lady collapse when I was on my way to work. I pulled over, called an ambulance, and performed CPR on her for 35 minutes before the ambulance arrived. She contacted the local paper after she'd recovered and asked the person (me) to come forward so she could say thank you. I tried to contact her through the paper but they wanted to feature me in an article and I didn't fancy it so never got to meet her again.

A while back I was parked at a stoplight reserved specifically for a crosswalk in a busy part of town. There were two lanes each way. Across from me only the outside lane was occupied, and the inside lane was wide open. The light was clearly red (reflectors, yellow paint - this crosswalk is VERY visible) and the pedestrians had the right of way.

Okay, so no big.

This young boy (10ish) starts to cross in front of the car opposite me when suddenly the driver of that car lays on the horn rapidly out of nowhere. I'm alarmed, my passengers are alarmed, the kid is so alarmed he stops dead right at the corner bumper of that car.

Half a second later some jackass in a suped up sedan comes flying through the crosswalk from down the empty lane behind the hero car doing at least the speed limit if not faster. No brakes, no slowing. To this day that idiot has no idea how close they came to making kid gravy all over the roadway and spending many years in jail.

It's hard to visualize, but in this situation our car was facing right down that lane while the hero car was parked facing away. And yet somehow, while none of us saw it coming, that car saw in their mirror, not only that this little car was coming, but that it was going too fast to stop, AND was able to react in time to save this kid's life. It bordered on a miracle, but I think saying so would underserve the efforts of that person who was just really on top of their **** that day.

So to whoever drives a grayish Subaru(?) hatchback car around the Boise, Idaho area. Kudos to you for being a superhero for a day!

I once almost drowned, and this girl, who was on an inflatable boat with her friends, jumped in and helped me out. To the red-headed girl with freckles and blue eyes, were ever the heck you are, thanks.

When I was really little, I got hit by a car on a walk with my dad. As I was drifting in&out of consciousness, I heard a woman telling my dad she called 911, then being picked up & brought to my dad. I never knew her identity, but to this day, I’m pretty sure I could have died if she didn’t act so quickly.
