Five years ago we adopted Bunny, our gorgeous Tuxie girl. All we knew about her is that she’d been rescued from a basement in Bushwick, Brooklyn. She’s the sweetest girl, and really changed our lives overnight. So much so that after a year or so we decided we wanted to pay forward her good fortune and ours – for having her in our lives – by writing a children’s chapter book series based on her adventures helping other animals. Now we have a chapter book series and donate to KittyKind, the group we adopted her from for every book sold. All along, we’ve always wanted to know her story before us.
So, fast forward to today, and we were at Jackson Galaxy’s Cat Camp NYC last weekend (June 1st, 2nd) selling our books, when we meet Jayda and Scott from an amazing rescue, TNR group called the Stray Cat Social Club, also based in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Long story short: They’d rescued Bunny (then known as Sarafina) from the dingy basement in their building all those years ago, along with her brother Puchito. They’d been mousers from kittenhood, living off scrapes of food, stuck in a basement (this is where I cried, so did my husband, Matt). We’d never have known her story if it hadn’t have been for this chance meeting. Now, Jayda and Scott are in the process of digging up some photos for us (hopefully some kitten shots!) and we’re working out a date for them to come and visit Bunny. They are changing lives of cats in the neighborhood every day, but on this particular occasion they changed our lives, too!
