Vegan Gets Served A Real Burger Without Even Knowing It, And Her Experience Ignites An Important Discussion

Carnivores vs vegans is an age-old conflict that doesn’t seem to be coming to an end any time soon. It’s really tense. And while there is no easy way to settle it, I think we can agree that a little empathy from both sides could do a lot of good. This story, however, is about something from the opposite side of the spectrum.

Yesterday, Redditor u/NarfoOnTheNet rediscovered a once-viral Tumblr thread about a server who thought it was OK to give a vegan girl a real hamburger. It touches on such important topics as religion, health, ethics, and remains relevant to this day, so we thought it’s only appropriate we shared it with you, dear Pandas, as well.

This story is very similar to the one we covered last week. Only it was inspired by a real-life situation.

When Tumblr users discovered this exchange on Twitter, they couldn’t stay silent about it

The discussion touched on such important topics as religion, health, and ethics

And once again reminded that diners need to get exactly what they order

As we mentioned in our publication last Friday, we should be paying extra attention to prevent similar scenarios as people are now way more sensitive to food than they were in the past.

Over 170 foods have been reported to cause allergic reactions but the major culprits are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and crustacean shellfish. They are usually the ones responsible for most of the serious food allergy reactions.

Researchers estimate that 32 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.6 million children under the age of 18. That equates to 1 in 13 children, or roughly two in every classroom. Plus, about 40 percent of children with food allergies are allergic to more than one food.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reported that the prevalence of food allergy in children increased by 50 percent between 1997 and 2011.

There is no single explanation for why these numbers are increasing, but science has some theories. A popular one is that improved hygiene is to blame, as children are not getting as many infections. Parasitic infections, in particular, are normally fought by the same mechanisms involved in tackling allergies.

Each year, 200,000 people in the US require emergency medical care for allergic reactions to food.

Sadly, there is no cure for food allergy, and avoiding triggers is the only way to prevent a reaction.

Both industry workers and customers found this behavior unacceptable

I'm a muslim. When I eat out, I say that I'm a vegetarian so I don't do meat. Because not everybody knows what halal means. And also I don't want to answer questions about my religion when I'm only there to get my food. So this is so messed up. Poor girl would be really sad, if she knew it.

You need to eat the foods that you are comfortable eating. Food is so important in our daily lives. But to be told that you have to eat this or have to eat that is just total bs. I was vegetarian for 23 years. I'm not now, but I also eat very little meat. I don't care who you are, or why you eat what you do, it is Your choice, or decision, and Nobody has the right to substitute other foods or dictate what is right for you. Only you.

Dont feed vegans or vegetarians meat on purpose without them knowing! There's a reason they don't rat meat and that reason could be an allergy or religion. But, the Lone Star Tick is a bastard made me laugh.

I had a hairstylist that told me she did this to her vegan friends without their knowledge. She put chicken broth in pot luck meals and told them it was vegan. She laughed when she said they called the next day to say they spent the day in the bathroom with diarrhea. I was furious because my husband is vegan because of issues with gout. I got her fired from her job when I told the manager that I would not be back as long as she was working there and why.

This! Also don't try to slip people alcohol or question them endlessly, if they don't want alcohol. And yes, I eat meat and drink alcohol myself, I just have some lovely vegetarian friends and friends, who don't drink alcohol (one doesn't like the taste, the other has stomach problems, that get worse with alcohol). It's just amazing how triggering it is apparently to some douchebags, if others don't eat meat or drink alcohol. Smh

I stopped drinking all types of alcohol about 3 and a half years ago. I don't mind telling people who ask that it's because alcohol in any quantity and concentration above 0.5% proof WILL make me acutely suicidal within the week. Yes a single glass of wine will do it, no, I don't miss the 'buzz' because I never particularly liked being drunk anyway. My family, friends and colleagues have been great about it and the rare occasions when someone else has been a d**k about it, the mention of suicide usually shuts them up pretty quickly!
