I agree with this, but I would say yes, and they need gentle parenting when those boundaries are crossed. Boundaries are important, but so is respect, discussion, allowing them to have boundaries of their own, and showing them love and kindness when they f*ck up, while still maintaining the boundaries and consequences that were set out.

I wear slippers indoors, but I don't have forty fits if people wear their shoes in my house. Because wearing slippers means my feet don't touch the floor, so no problems. I really don't understand the depth of eww. Obviously if you step in something that should have been picked up, you clean your shoes before entering, but apart from that.

There seems to be a certain divide between (flat) renters vs. house owners/inhabitants, and city vs. country folk where I live (northern Germany). We live rural, in an old farm house with a big garden, which serves as an outdoor sitting room in the summer. We (people around me, friends, family, neighbours) don't expect people to take off their shoes to cross the house for the garden and then put shoes on again - and we don't do it either. Also our floors are cold. Visiting people in the city "no shoes" is the standard.

I don't wear shoes in my house, but I never insist on anyone removing theirs when they visit, especially trades people. Some people at work insist on walking around in their socks, especially on nights, and I'm not a fan if this, especially considering the state of the floor.

I could agree with this only if it’s amended such that *outside* shoes are not worn inside and “inside” shoes are not worn outside. Also, allowances and contingencies have to be made for circumstances where you are going in and out repeatedly; it’s simply not practical to keep switching shoes at the door when bringing in groceries, for example.

I grew up poor-ish. I had 1 pair of shoes and I had just enough socks to last 1 week. We weren't allowed to walk around in our socks, because they would get holes in them faster. So, shoes were kept on in the house, or you went bare-footed. Shoes were removed if you put your feet on a couch or something. Dirty shoes were removed at the entry, but you would then walk barefoot. This always seemed like a middle-class+ issue to me.
