A weekend getaway with your girlfriends might be exactly what you need to relax, reset, and return to your regular life feeling rejuvenated. These little breaks from real life are especially important for moms. But before embarking on a weekend trip, you’ll want to make sure that the vibes will be immaculate. And if there’s any tension in the friend group, that could ruin the entire experience.

That’s why one woman had to make the difficult decision of uninviting one of the moms in her friend group from a weekend cabin trip. But after she broke the news to her, she began to wonder if she made the right call. Below, you’ll find the full story that the author posted on Reddit, as well as some of the replies invested readers left her.

Weekend getaways with friends can be amazing bonding experiences

There’s something so magical about going on a girls’ trip with your closest friends. It’s an opportunity to give one another your undivided attention, without worrying about needing to pick up the kids from school or getting called into work last minute.

These little getaways can be wonderful bonding experiences for friends, and a great way to stay connected to friends that you might not have the chance to see often. Plus, you might be brave enough to have exciting new experiences with your besties that you would have been scared to try otherwise.

In fact, research on women-only outdoor programs has found that women are more likely to take risks with others that they wouldn’t have taken alone. And they even report increased physical confidence in the presence of other women.

Meanwhile, a 2022 review in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B found that friendships between women are particularly high in mutual support and self-disclosure. And women are great at giving support to one another, as well as receiving it from each other. Basically, women benefit from spending time around other women!

Plus, it’s especially important for moms to have breaks, as it’s rare for them to ever have a moment when they’re not in caretaker mode. According to Counsel Clinic, between 57% and 81% of moms experience burnout, often caused by unrealistic expectations, a lack of support, role conflict, and chronic exhaustion.

Burnout can take a significant toll on mothers, often leading to mental health issues, strained relationships, and reduced productivity. That’s why it’s so important for moms to prioritize self-care, rest, and recovery.

Cutting off a toxic friend is necessary but never easy

A weekend trip away with friends won’t be restful, though, if there’s someone in attendance who’s always causing drama. It’s important to be able to recognize the signs of a toxic friendship and remove that person from your friend group if they’re repeatedly causing issues.

Hope Therapy & Counseling notes that these red flags include constant criticism and negativity, control and manipulation, a one-sided relationship, boundary violations, competitive behavior, and trust issues.

To break free from an unhealthy friendship like this, Hope Therapy recommends limiting communication with the person that you want to cut off. Decline invitations to any of their events, and reduce social media interactions or remove them from your social media entirely. When you have to interact with them, keep conversations brief and neutral.

It’s never comfortable having to uninvite someone from an event, especially something that they’ve been to in the past and are looking forward to. But when a person shows a pattern of creating drama and causing discomfort within the friend group, they can’t be shocked when they’re unwelcome there.
