This is shocking to me. The broad strokes of world history are as basic as 2+2 in the school systems I've known. This explains why so many from the US in comments sections know so little about the world and are very US centred in their thinking. How can they value the rest of the world if they know nothing about it

I seem to recall hearing a little about ancient Central and South American cultures when I was at school, along with a rough outline of ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian stuff. But almost nothing about ancient Africa beyond Egypt, or ancient Asia beyond Alexander the Great's rampage. Mind you, at least we had maps that showed the whole world. Yes, the line down the middle of the map did run through my (ahem) home town (London) - but that's just the Greenwich meridian convention and it also meant that Africa was stage centre, with the great bulk of Asia off to the right making Europe look quite small and silly.
