There is a handful of questions that will go fully unanswered throughout the course of human existence: “What is the meaning of life? What lies beyond the stars and galaxies?” And, my personal favorite, “Why do different generations borderline loathe each other?” The latter discussion has been brought to the internet, especially with the rising popularity of discussing millennials. Older generations like to bash on millennials for fostering “snowflake” culture and effectively living in their phones. This ultimately lead to millennials “retaliating”.

“OK boomer” is one of the most recently-coined (and extremely popular) phrases that takes a jab at the baby boomer generation. This phrase is said in response to something foolish that a boomer says and you can’t even begin to explain how wrong they are. It’s just not worth it.
And the explanation was so spot on, it quickly became viral not only on Twitter, but on Reddit as well

Robert Allam, a.k.a. GallowBoob on Twitter and a fellow Bored Panda, has recently added to the discussion by posting a screencap of his girlfriend’s very accurate explanation of why the phrase “OK boomer” caught on. Bored Panda got in touch with Allam.

Allam was casually texting his girlfriend about how he saw “OK boomer” memes and replies practically everywhere that he didn’t quite know what to make of it. “Told her I am not sure if it’s another silly meme or not, since it’s being spammed loudly everywhere,” explained Allam.

“To [that] she simply explained (with the screencap) and added that while it shouldn’t be used as a reply to shut down everything, its existence came from trying to talk for years and getting nowhere.” This was the moment both of them thought to themselves, “Okay, we welcome ‘OK Boomer’ into our lives.”

Allam had no idea this short commentary would take him places online: “Had absolutely no idea so many people would relate with that simple explanation. And yet, it seems like it resonated with too many people. It made me basically go ‘oh… hmm… good point’. It seems like it did that to everyone else, too. She was blown away by the reception and impact it had. And so was I.”

The tweet received a lot of attention, garnering over 23,000 retweets and over 90,000 likes on Twitter.
In light of this virality of the tweet, Allam even hooked his girlfriend up with a Twitter account so that she could follow things: “I convinced her to get on Twitter, making her an account and plugging it on the post. Surprisingly, she has almost 1,000 followers already and they are welcoming and supportive! She’s now addicted to Twitter overnight.”

My parents are baby boomers. When they were young they had to endure all matter of older generations calling them lazy, spoiled and the worst generation ever. My sister and I are Gen X. When we were young we had to endure all matter of older generations calling us lazy spoiled and the worst generation ever. I totally understand where millennials are coming from. I just wish more people realized how stupid they sound when they wrongly judge and entire generation off of the experience with a handful of them and/or what they see on the internet.

As a child of boomers I really don't understand the generational hate. Yall want to divide us by color, gender, nationality, now age too? Discourse is a lot more productive than dismissing someone's opinion based on a stereotype of a generation because it "went viral".

Thanks C. I wish these pages would quit dividing us. I’m a boomer and remember the 60s. “Get rid of everyone over 30.” Silly. My 32 yr old niece visited me this weekend and she has so much common sense. Everyone can learn from someone as long as it’s considerate conservation.

One more comment. Young people complain about the high cost of college tuition. Rightfully so. Why is it so high? Higher education should cost some and think about all the support like cleaning of the campus, the people who serve you food on campus, the people behind the scenes, like administrative staff, etc. But why so much? How much is paid for tenured staff, the football program, the top administrators, etc. Just my thought.

All millennials know how to do is blame others for our failures and shortcomings... hence "OK Boomer." It's a way to silence anyone who might actually have knowledge or experience. And it's prevalent on twitter, twitch, instagram, facebook, etc. I cringe so hard that my body nearly implodes, every time I see some uneducated moron say it when someone questions their stupid opinions on climate change, politics, etc...

As a Millennial I find it a bit ironic this person is calling boomers out for not being able to have a discussions, because in my experience Millennials are becoming very prone to no-platforming and shutting down any opinion/information they find unsavory instead of having an actual debate. That said generalizing entire generations is silly. The way you are raised and the environment you grew up in has a lot more to do with who you are as a person than your age, gender, race or whatever.

True irony: Boomers were the first generation to reject the idea of aspiring to be like their parents, and instead embraced the idea of going against the older generation, starting a revolution, and ignoring what they were told. That's exactly what the 60's were all about. So many layers to the irony of this situation - it's delicious.

I am the daughter of two boomers and the niece of a gen-xer and I think that every generation is looked at negatively by other generations. Even though my parents are boomers and I am a millennial we are still able to find common ground on certain subjects. If we can't we just agree to disagree. I know some boomers who are lazy and I know some that are hardworking. I also know some millennials that are lazy and some that hardworking. It's about the individual and not about their generation.

Every generation think 'kids today have it easy' and it's is easier in someways! My kids have never had to walk home in the rain we didn't have a phone or car but they have mobiles PC in your pocket.They never had to rewrite an entire page of an essay because they had computers and spell check. The know more about the dangers of of the world because we've taught them! But they have different issues!!! I've always had a full time job. I could take antibiotics, we hadn't realised we were abusing them. I didn't have the responsibility of going on huge protest marches to try and save the planet ( not saying there were no protest when I was a kid but I didn't feel pressurised by peers and media to take a stand. Plus many more issues. Times change old people moan! More
