20 Side-By-Side Images That Show How These Popular TV Shows And Movies Were Named At First
The movies and TV shows that we know and love might have been named completely differently if producers went with their gut instincts and very first ideas. In a parallel universe, there’s no ‘Stranger Things,’ no ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ would have been called ‘Lenny, Kenny, and Penny.’
It’s time to stroll through ‘The Twilight Zone’ and step into the ‘what if’ part of TV Land. So get settled in with some popcorn, put on your 3D glasses, and scroll down for Bored Panda’s newest feature about what movies and TV shows were originally called.
Don’t forget to upvote your fave pics and, when you’re done with this list, check our post about popular things that initially had very different names.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
True, though "Biffy" better illustrates the tongue-in-cheek nature of the show.
Load More Replies...Slayer is short and sweet, but somehow Buffy the Vampire Slayer is much catchier! Plus, it gives a nice weight to what 'Slayer' is supppsed to be/mean, whereas 'Slayer' by itself is very vague, which might be more fitting for a mystery/thriller vibe than an action/superhero-esque one
Also, the movie that predates the series was called "Buffy the vampire slayer". Simply "Slayer" gives me metal vibes. Especially considering the time period it started airing
I want to know where this information comes from. Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, made it to reboot the movie, which was not very popular. Incidentally, Joss Whedon was also involved in the production of the original movie.

Um, but this was based on a movie. Why would they have called it Slayer when they literally got their title from the movie? Seems to me like BtVS was the original title and they considered changing it but didn't. A little misleading.
That 70's Show
"Sally take my hand, we'll travel south cross land, put out the fire and don't look past my shoulder"
They changed the name when they found out what it was going to cost for the rights to use Baba O' Reilly as the show's theme song.
Mr. Bean
Can't stand that character regardless... Rowan Atkinson is excellent in Black Adder though!
Who doesn’t love the hit TV show ‘Friends?’ Well, imagine having to look forward to an episode of ‘Six of One.’ Or ‘Insomnia Cafe.’ Weird, right? Even though I’m pretty sure that we’d get used to those names if we heard them over and over again over the years, they just sound plain bonkers right now, don’t they?
Would ‘Friends’ have become an iconic show if it was called something else? My mind says ‘probably,’ but my gut says ‘no.’ There’s a lot in a name. And it can make (or break) a project.
Finding the perfect title for your show or film is a delicate balancing act. And way, way harder than it sounds. The Hollywood Reporter stresses that you can’t be too witty, but you have to avoid being too generic, as well. Titles also can’t be too long, lazy, or too vague. With a list of advice that long, it’s no wonder so many shows fail to captivate their target audiences.
The Big Bang Theory
So glad they chose the title they did... and the linked-in-to-the-theme episode titles. :D
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Lost
I must the only one in the world that liked the ending of Lost.
Load More Replies...I think "Nowhere" would have tipped people off much sooner as what the premise actually was, although I personally don't think the writers had a clue where the plot was headed.
Heroes, Lost and Fringe, it was as if none of the writers thought these would go beyond a couple seasons and were totally clueless when they did.
Exactly, like they never really planned for it be anything more than short mini-series or just a one-two season show but since they got super popular they knew they had to cash-in on it's success and quickly throw something together. That combined with the fact that most of those shows were getting way too "epic" that simply couldn't live up to what it was building up to.
Load More Replies...STILL never seen so much as an episode of this show. Think I'll go download it and give it a shot
During the first season I said to a friend, I hope the end won't be that ... and that's what it was: Back then my friend said, no, it can't be that, that's too stupid. The show was getting more weird and stupid every season but the finale really ruined it completely!
Keeping titles simple and to-the-point yet dynamic seems to be the main goal. So if you’re unsure what to name your next visual masterpiece, consider giving it a single-word title.
But the words you use can’t just sound cool—they have to actually be related to your show. When somebody hears the title, they immediately have to understand more or less what the show’s going to be about. Is it serious? Goofy? Seriously goofy?
Humor and playing around with double meaning can also work wonders. As can ‘modernizing’ the name of your show to fit the current context of important events: you can draw inspiration from current social, political, and other issues to link your title to the audience.
Friends
it was also almost called insomnia cafe, across the hall and others ( 100 names altogether)
I still think I must be one of the only people in the world who has not seen a full season of FRIENDS. I don't know what it is- I could just never get into it.
Married With Children
Probably given hindsight its good that it wasn't associated with the Cosby show in any way!
The Cosby show made me wanna go to college.
Load More Replies...yeah! der deutsche Titel passt fast am besten finde ich ;-))
Load More Replies...Stranger Things
if stranger things was called Montauk i've never have watched it
Deathcotelover I prefer "I'd've never watched it"
Load More Replies...I remember seeing STRANGER THINGS and being curious. MONTAUK doesn't have the same appeal -- I might have assumed it was about a hockey team.
Montauk would've been interesting. Ref to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?
I'm pretty sure it is more of a reference to the "Montauk Project" at montauk airforce base regarding the government's secret time travel / invisibility testing.
Load More Replies...Don't read anything about it and watch it from the beginning!!!
Load More Replies...Charmed
This was a great show. Then in 2018 it was rebooted and it was AMAZINGLY C**P!
I loved this show, although it did get a bit preachy when McGowan joined. Guess now we know why, she's just a whiny twat. Luckily the producers learned their lesson and... wait, nope, they ROYALLY fubared the reboot by doubling down on the McGowan ethos and effectively erasing any goodwill the original show had built. Now when you say charmed most people roll their eyes or groan as it's synonymous with SJW sanctimony.
"Charmed" was very nicely written in the first seasons but ended being just a repetitive "Beverly Hills 90210" wannabe after some time. Too bad the chemistry off-camera between Rose McGowan and Alyssa Milano wasn't so magic after all...Rumors still say that Shannen Doherty left also because of her. Also this show is inspired by a movie, the very 90s "The Craft", featuring the ever present Neve Campbell and Fairuza Balk (the title song is also in fact, the same).
Grey's Anatomy
The movie name translations though are crazy off sometimes. My family would be talking about some awesome movie they watched, but because of the Polish name for it I would have no idea what the hell they're talking about.
Load More Replies...I'm glad they stuck with Grey's Anatomy. A great wordplay off the medical textbook Gray's Anatomy, written by Henry Gray in 1858 and continuously printed to this day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grays_Anatomy.
Plus it's the name of the main protagonist Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).
Load More Replies...Regardless, the naming is very clever. Gray's Anatomy is an English written textbook of human anatomy
Load More Replies...Saturday Night Live
I don't think it would have made any difference. I remember when it first came out. It didn't take long for the media, and the players, to call it NBC's Saturday Night.
That explains the intro to every show! I always wondered why they said “live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” 💡
The show was actually called just "Saturday Night" in its 1976 season—which was live.
Live! From New York It's Saturday Night. I saw that one.
Load More Replies...hated it then still do even more! can't get away from clips, that is how I know.
New Girl
"chicks and d***s" made me laugh... but who makes the "chick" plural, especially as it was meant to be about her and the boys...?
Taking the s out of chicks ... Chick and d***s = chick'n'd***s = chicken d***s. Now thats a whole other show.
Load More Replies...C&D would have been significantly more honest, revealing it for more of the usual awkward=funny b******t.
This Is Us
The pilot shows the triplets on their 36th bdays.
Load More Replies...Happy Days
That name wouldn't have worked in the the song at all! Sunday, Monday, Cool! Tuesday, Wednesday, Cool! Thursday, Friday, Cool! Saturday, what a day Rockin' all week with you. ...on second thought
Well they used “Rock Around the Clock” as the first theme song, wouldn’t have mattered.
Load More Replies...Fonzie was not meant to be a regular character. He was in one episode and fans liked him so much that the producers brought him back.
"Cool?" but so much of the show wasn't... Happy Days was definitely the right choice!
Seinfeld
This is probably the least different one. I think if they had stuck with the right it wouldn't have impacted the show's popularity much, but the fandom would've shortened it anyway
I personally think that "NBC's Saturday Night" instead of "Saturday Night Live!" is most least different title, as is more than less is the same title. "The Seinfeld Chronicles" on the other hand makes it sound like a completely different show IMO. Almost sounds like it could be a serious drama type sitcom instead of a comedy.
Load More Replies..."The Seinfeld Chronicles" is the name of the pilot, too. It was shortened to "Seinfeld" to fit the 1980s fad at the time of naming 30-minute comedies a single name: "Roseanne", "Webster", "Benson", etc. (Seinfeld premiered in 1989).
In Poland it's known as "The Seinfeld Chronicles" ("Kroniki Seinfelda"). Guess they've used the pilot's title for the whole show.
Saved By The Bell
Funny thing is, when the show “Good Morning Miss Bliss” came out for the one year it was around (love Hayley Mills) I started teaching that exact year. And my name was MISS BLISS!
Full House
But wasn't it a house of comics after all? The kooky impressions of Uncle Joey, the good natured dad-humor of Danny, the cynical zingers of sexy Uncle Joey, the clever exchanges of those sisters! I'd say 'House of Comics' about sums up how I felt about this gem of American culture on Friday nights in the Fall of 1990!
Originally it was going to be about three stand-up comics living together. Despite the sitcom singers, Joey was the only one who was actually a comedian after the initial pitch.

their last name wasn't o'malley, was it? the amazing russos would sound more magicky too ;D
The Amazing Russos has a more circusy sideshow vibe I think.

Wait--why does everyone look so much paler in the left picture? Are they all secretly vampires? Does someone need to call Buffy?
Looooooove the pic on the left... people on the right look like they pick oranges or something. Spraytan, I'm guessing?
