Trees have been around for about 370 million years, and as you can from these incredible pictures, there's a good reason why they've survived for so long. Whether they're growing in the middle of gale-force winds, on the tops of rocky platforms, inside concrete tunnels, or even growing out of each other, these beautiful trees know how to survive in places where no other life finds a way. Which explains why the planet is host to around 3 trillion adult trees that cover an estimated 30% of the earth's land. Considering that plants produce the vast majority of the oxygen that we breathe, we should all think ourselves very fortunate that these cool trees are as resilient as they are. We wouldn't even be here if they weren't.

Now scroll down and check our list filled with unbelievable photos - from old trees clutching to life to big trees growing in desolate places and tree roots finding their way through pavements, the beauty of our Mother Nature is truly stunning. (h/t: twistedsifter)

It's a lot more common than you might think. If you walk in the forest look for this and for rows of trees in a straight line where the parent log has disappeared. You might be surprised at how many you find.

It's highly unlikely because the pressure to burst a square metal pole must be enormous, especially on such a long surface. It's less effort for the tree to grow up and simply extend on the upper part, so that's the way it will go. The only way the tree could surpass the pole would be during winter (thanks to metal contraction and freezing), but trees barely grow during that time. Yes engineers are fun at party :|

The Crooked Forest (Polish: Krzywy Las), is a grove of oddly-shaped pine trees located outside Nowe Czarnowo, West Pomerania, Poland. Each pine tree bends sharply to the North just above ground level, then curves back upright after a sideways excursion of three to nine feet (1–3 m). It is generally believed that some form of human tool or technique was used to make the trees grow this way, but the method and motive are not currently known. Others surmise that a snowstorm could have knocked the trees like this, but to date nobody knows what really happened to these pine trees krzywy-las...0ef9aa.jpg krzywy-las-1-5989c960ef9aa.jpg

This piece of sandstone was connected to the other side when the tree began to grow, it has been eroded away over many years by wind and rain. Tree roots cannot grow like this without support. This is a biological fact, not just another magical idea, trust me, I have spent most of my life studying life on this planet and learn something new every single day, I recommend it highly. The ficus trees are slowly destroying the temple - in many places, the entire structure would collapse if they were removed, but their growth pushes the blocks apart... It's fortuitous that it's a Buddhist temple, because it's a particularly beautiful example of the transience of all things...

So someone went to the top of the tree to thread down the piano over it? That would be impossible with the branches. The keyboard bit is still attached and intact so that's the only way your theory works...

He didn't know that two sisters owned these houses before and planted three trees ON THE FENCE LINE, so his fence guy bent the top support bar and now about 5 years later, the trees are pushing this cyclone fence way out of shape. When you have a phobia it helps to actually take a good look. A good look would tell you that, with all those roots hanging on, those trees are never gong to fall - until the wall falls - and that wall looks pretty damned strong.

Makes one imagine all of the "secrets" that trees can carry into the future. A place with houses, etc., taken over completely by trees would carry many more interesting history markers than archeologists find in the trees today.

Judging by the style, the wall is old enough to have lime mortar in there, and the facade is really on the verge of falling off. Tuck-pointing might not be enough to save this one.

Well at least trees don't have nervous systems and therefore can't feel pain. Regardless they don't feel pain because they aren't sentient
