I made these images of Costumed Masked Bhutanese Cham dancers at the Nomad Festival near central Bhutan’s Bumthang district high in the Himalayas. It is believed that these dances celebrate an incident in Tibetan Buddhist mythology – the victory of the saint Tsangpa Gyare – over demons which were blocking a path through a Tibetan valley.
It was amazingly beautiful and fun. Sarah and I were two of probabally 50 westerners that had even been to the Bumthang Nomad Festival.
