Very inspiring article, thank you for sharing. For me I find the eyes captivating in almost every image...especially those in very poor situations. Even the children seem to have a world more to say in their eyes than we do. https://www.peternutkins.photography
portrait photographers, one must mention Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, David Bailey, Annie Leibowitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, August Sander, and many others that made photography what it is today.

They are all pleasant photos visually, but we've all seen it all a hundred times before by countless photographers. Closeup, shallow depth of field, crank the color saturation up. The only thing that makes these unique to the American eye is the that they are exotic people. Borges style is unique, and Lee Jeffries a little less so.
These guys are all copying each other (or someone else). Their work has no distinctive style. It's cliche
The iconic work of artist Luvelli. His timeless romantically raw and macabre atmospheric work speaks for itself.
This is nuts. All of these images are of interesting people, not necessarily even good photographs. The people make these images.
My God! Human Beings are so beautiful, glorious, these are the faces of who we can be! Thank you!
2nd of photo of David Lazar is taken in Bangladesh. You can see that girl is wearing a Bangladesh Flag T-shirt

feels like a photo colony ... a new way for colonial behaviour ...
The last of David Lazar's photos is of a Masai boy in Eastern Africa. I recognized the head dress, it identified as that in his gallery.

The term here 'top 10' seems to be based on the subject rather than the technique, so no these aren't the 10 best. Though they are all good
I cannot believe you don't have John Kenny on this list http://john-kenny.com/
You forgot Joey Lawrence of NYC. He has done some amazing portraits both commercially and internationally.
these are beautiful photographs , but they don't show anything really, because all of them are staged and not real.
they are a "objects" looked and positioned by a photographer not a life and movement as it should be .

FOARTE REALE DACA POT SPUNE ASA e nevoie de timp si imaginatie ptr avgasi esenta fiecareie
Thank you! Add to that the photos of Timothy Allen and Barbara Gundle.
Contrived much? Are you are into actual cultures or ecoturism porn?
I first saw Steve McCurry, over 40 years ago in the Photojournalism book of the Time-Life series. The Monsoon, India story. Exceptional.
Mario Testino (e.g. Lady Di in Vogue), Richard Avedon (In the West).
It's impossible for me to judge. I know nothing about technique, but all the results are extraordinarily compelling. Great range.
What a gift to be able to view such incredible images by such talent.
These are absolutely amazing! I have never seen a collection of such astounding and breathtaking pictures.
who are these other people in the photos with such beautiful eyes? i know the girl in the first photo is an Afghan. I wanna know their race
Revealing aspects of beauty, love, pride, disdain, despair, hope, ... perhaps easier to say that these photos share a global humanity.
What I would give to have a conversation with each of the people photographed here. OMG.
Have you heard of Diego Arroyo? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Diego-Arroyo-Photography/303672146312132
Kinda obvious that certain cultures and backgrounds make for more interesting portraits, around the world seems pretty limited.
In my humble amateur opinion I think you missed Mike Shaw. https://plus.google.com/u/0/+MikeShaw/posts
Looky look at all the dark-skinned people! Aren't their tribal adornments quaint? Can you say, "retro-Colonialism"...?
