Student, 19, Who Died In Titanic Sub ‘Catastrophic Implosion’ Was ‘Terrified’ Before Trip, But Agreed For His Dad As A Father’s Day Present
The deep-sea submersible carrying five people on a voyage to the wreck of the legendary Titanic was found in pieces after a “catastrophic implosion” that killed everyone aboard, the U.S. Coast Guard said, ending a multinational five-day search for the vessel.
A robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship discovered debris from the submersible Titan on Thursday morning on the seabed some 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the bow of the Titanic, 2 1/2 miles (4 km) beneath the surface, in a remote corner of the North Atlantic, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger told reporters.
The Titan, operated by the U.S.-based company OceanGate Expeditions, had been missing since it lost contact with its surface support ship on Sunday morning about an hour into what should have been a two-hour dive.

“We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost,” OceanGate Inc. told Bored Panda in a statement.
“These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew.”
“This is an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss. The entire OceanGate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organizations of the international community who expedited wide-ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission. We appreciate their commitment to finding these five explorers, and their days and nights of tireless work in support of our crew and their families.”
“This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community, and for each of the family members of those lost at sea. We respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time.”

But his 19-year-old son went on the trip because it fell over Father’s Day weekend and he was eager to please his dad
Azmeh Dawood — the older sister of Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood — told NBC News that her nephew, Suleman, while speaking to a relative, said he “wasn’t very up for it” and felt “terrified” about the trip to explore the wreckage of the Titanic.
But he eventually ended up going aboard OceanGate’s 22-foot submersible because the trip fell over Father’s Day weekend and he was eager to please his dad, who was really passionate about the lore of the Titanic, Azmeh explained.
“I am thinking of Suleman, who is 19, in there, just perhaps gasping for breath … It’s been crippling, to be honest,” Azmeh added.
She was devastated on Thursday when OceanGate, the company behind the Titan expedition, confirmed that all five passengers aboard were presumed dead.
“I feel disbelief,” Azmeh said. “It’s an unreal situation.”
The U.S. Coast Guard said that debris in the search area was consistent with a “catastrophic implosion”

Launched from the Canadian ship Horizon Arctic, the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) located two debris fields and at least five major pieces of the sub, including its nose cone and part of the pressure hull. It is believed the Titan imploded under the immense pressure of the deep ocean before the search and rescue operation even began.
Officials said listening devices detected no sounds consistent with such a “catastrophic failure” and that noises detected earlier by a Canadian aircraft were probably not related to the missing sub.
“This was a catastrophic implosion of the vessel, which would have generated a significant broadband sound down there that the sonar buoys would have picked up,” U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger explained. “We will begin to demobilize personnel and vessels from the scene over the course of the next 24 hours.”
Until then, a difficult investigation and search for the crew is ongoing.
“This is a incredibly unforgiving environment down there on the seafloor,” Mauger said after being asked about the chance of finding human remains. “We’ll continue to work and continue to search the area down there, but I don’t have an answer for prospects at this time.”

People have been incredibly saddened by the news
This is all too sad, but I'm kinda relieved it was an implosion though, because I guess that means they haven't spent all those last days hoping they would be rescued and realizing they weren't. Sending love to their families and souls
Yeah at least it was quick. There probably wasn't even time to panic.

And yeah if i read the news about sinken refugee Ships its just… „again…? I dont care, Same as Last week…“ Why should i be Shocked about the death of 5 people who mean the Same To me as some nameless dead on the greek coast… ? God - humankind is horrible…
Partially it's due to the nature of each incident. I'm more interested in what happened to the Titan than the fishing boat because we know exactly what went wrong with the fishing boat. It capsized because it was overloaded. It was overloaded because people were trying to escape horrible living conditions. That's easy to understand. We know the Titan imploded, but we don't know why. We can assume it was due to shoddy workmanship but I want to know exactly what failed. The deaths from both disasters are tragic, but there's more to uncover with this one.
Load More Replies...Now do the same sob-stories (and yes, they are sad, it's always sad when people die) for every refugee fleeing from war who dies in the sea. Oh, wait, they're not rich dudes, plus, they're not white, so their risk-taking means they don't deserve sympathy or attention.
The father and son mentioned here aren't white. Just saying.

Wrecks are fascinating things. Nothing to do with watching people that died, more to do with seeing a piece of history. It's the same reason people visit Auschwitz or the Great Wall of China.
Load More Replies...The 19yo is the only one I feel sympathy for. The rest deserved their deaths because of their sheer arrogance, especially the CEO, who thought he could cheap out on materials and ignore standard engineering knowledge. Other than the son, this is an episode of Stupid Ways to Die.
Very sad and there is pretty much a 100% guarantee, the end was instantaneous. There would have been no fear or suffering.
That is the worst part. He was scared to begin with so he likely started panicking immediately when he got inside and there was no panic button or way to get off. Why would his father force him to go? I can't stand to see my kids scared or panicked and never would force them on rides or anything scary usually try to talk them out of it so I don't have to go lol but this is just wrong.
The boy was so young! It's so sad that he went so early... sad to think about their loved ones or how torn they would be feeling.
Why aren't there any photos or footage of them before the trip?
My mom was already upset thinking about how young the 19 year old was, and I guess she overheard me talking to a sibling about how a lot of the internet is saying how he deserved to die because he was rich, so I swear, she was almost crying.
the thing that makes me sick is this shouldve been reported awhile ago. i live with 2 ppl whose job is news media. they literally write news articles for a living. theyve read multiple articles on this situation and some contradict others. one article stated the sub wasnt approved to go as deep as it was planning to, another stated the owner of the company thought sub safety regualtions were a joke the list of horrible things goes on. i did my own research into it and found bc the sub was not up to proper safety regualtions and not approved for the depth they were going the sub most likely imploded the day they set out. basically news outlets were keeping the hopes of viewers and the families alive just to tell them this. my heart goes out to the families and my anger goes towards the owner and makers of the sub.
This honestly just breaks my heart.. just imagining them gasping for breath..
Actually his Mom posted today that she was supposed to go with the father, but Suleman wanted to go so badly That she gave him her spot. He wanted to do this Rubicc cube in 3800 m below and that was supposed to be a world record. His father took a camera with him to film this. So, apparently he wasn't frightened. And, this makes me feel better a bit.
someone on wikipedia keeps deleting this poor kid. listing the other victims as Notable and removing him from Deaths in 2013. like, damn..you just keep removing him from list or deleting a page to him. poor kid.
Soooo, yeah, still not "heartbroken" over this. In this country where atrocities are happening at a larger scale to less "well-funded" communities, this "news" should have been a :15 max update and then done. I swear, people will try to milk the nothingness of a story to keep these people, who give two f***s about those below a certain monetary level, in the spotlight. And everyone is so quick to talk about how "sad" this is, when it's not. It's stupid and unfortunate. But sadness? Not even an ounce. I'm going to save my sadness for tragedies that don't get even 1/10 of the spotlight this nonsense is getting. Especially since those are fixable now, but we don't want to talk about it. Here, I'll sprinkle some thoughts and prayers on these folks for you.
It's sad for the families, but what an utterly pointless way to die. Taking those risks to go and gawp at a heap of rusting metal. Moreover, to be a ghoul and treat the final resting place and grave of hundreds of people, many of whom still have living descendents, as a tourist attraction.
Like Auschwitz? Normandy beach? The 9/11 memorial? The Alamo? None of these are my cup of tea, but It’s a mistake to label those who are drawn to such places as ghouls.
