Nestled in a woodland setting, Thorncrown Chapel by E. Fay Jones rises forty-eight feet into the Ozark sky. This magnificent wooden structure contains 425 windows and over 6,000 square feet of glass. It sits atop over 100 tons of native stone and colored flagstone, making it blend perfectly with its setting. The chapel’s simple design and majestic beauty combine to make it what critics have called “one of the finest religious spaces of modern times.”

Awards of the Thorncrown Chapel:

Considering that the chapel opened in 1980, over six million individuals have visited that woodland sanctuary. Designed by distinguished architect E. Fay Jones, Thorncrown has gained numerous architectural awards such as the National Institute of Architects’Style of the Year Merit for 1981 and AIA’s prestigious 25 Year Award. Recently, people of the National Institute of Architects placed Thorncrown Chapel next on its listing of the utmost effective structures of the twentieth century.

The enthusiasm for Thorncrown Chapel was Sainte Chappelle, Paris’light-filled medieval chapel. Fay affectionately marked Thorncrown’s style as “Ozark Gothic.” The chapel rises 48 feet into the atmosphere with over 6,000 square feet of glass and 425 windows. Their proportions are 24 feet by 60 feet. The chapel is made out of all natural components to match its natural setting. The only real metal in the structure types a diamond-shaped structure in its wooden trusses. The creating has a native flagstone ground surrounded by way of a steel wall which provides the sensation that the chapel is a section of its Ozark hillside.

To be able to keep Thorncrown’s natural setting, Fay decided that no architectural factor could possibly be larger than what two guys could take through the woods. The creating components are largely force treated maple 2x4s, 2x6s, and 2x12s. The more expensive aspects of the creating such as the trusses were built on the ground and raised in to place.

Light, shadows, and insights play a significant role in Thorncrown’s ambiance. Due to the chapel’s intricate trusses and the encompassing trees, continually changing habits of gentle and shadows seem throughout the day. Through the night insights of the crosses in the lights seem to encompass the entire building. Subsequently, Thorncrown never looks quite the same. Their appearance changes throughout each hour of the afternoon and throughout different times of the year.

Jones’awards include the 1981 National Institute of Architects National Recognition Merit for Thorncrown Chapel and the AIA Gold Medal (1990). Thorncrown was listed next on the AIA’s top ten structures of the 20th century. When living, Mr. Jones was acknowledged as one of the top ten living architects of the 20th century.
