With house prices continuing to rise, building your own home sounds like a good way of beating real estate agents at their own game.

But unfortunately, you might not save as much money as you’d think.

The map below from Capital on Tap shows the cost of constructing the average size home in 50 different cities, and even though it doesn’t include the cost of land or local taxes and fees, the prices are still pretty eye-watering.

At a cost of nearly $500,000, New York is the most expensive place in the world to build your own home. Likely driven by the high demand for contractors and supplies, there’s also the lack of free space to consider.

More than likely you’ll have to buy an existing plot to demolish and then there’s a whole mess of rules, inspections and zoning laws to deal with which likely makes it all way more hassle than it’s worth.

On the other side of the country, San Fransisco is the second most expensive place in the world to build, then just a few hours north is Vancouver in third.
