Being attacked by a trans woman in the bathroom. The chances are so low it essentially doesn't happen. Transwomen are much more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.
What I find weird about that is assuming any gender / sexual orientation is likely to make you an attacker. Gay men use male restrooms / lesbians women's restrooms. But it's not like straight men and women are all, "Gee I'm afraid to go potty because the other person who looks like me might be gay and attack me. I'm not wording it well I'm saying being 'different' from the norm doesn't make you a monster or attacker.
This..I don't lose a thought about what gender a person prefers in private..just none of my business
Load More Replies...If a man was going to attack a woman in the bathroom, I don't think he would go through the trouble of pretending to be trans. He would just do it.
Load More Replies...If a trans woman were to come into the bathroom while I was in there, I would just assume she needs to #1/#2. No more, no less.
Chances of being attacked by your youth pastor while in prayer are much greater.
The concern isn’t that people necessarily think trans women are any more likely to assault people. It’s that biological males are stronger than biological females, even if they’ve medically transitioned (unless they did so at a very young age), which means that if a trans woman or a man pretending to be a trans woman DOES attack a biological woman in a bathroom, it’ll be harder for her to defend herself. But the solution isn’t to ban trans people from using the bathroom they feel most comfortable using. The solution is to completely overhaul the way we do bathrooms so it’ll be a non-issue. My dad thinks all the stalls should have proper doors and open into an open area instead of a separate room. The sinks would be in this open area. Nobody’s gonna try anything out in the open like that (except people who would assault people out in the open anyway).
I always ask transphobes what bathroom Trans men should use. I have never received an answer.
The genuine answer is that they don't want trans people to exist in public spaces at all.
Load More Replies...Interesting they never say anything about trans men. But it's all part of their misogyny and transmisogyny.
Actually, I’ve seen concern about the safety of trans men in men’s spaces. Specifically, I’ve seen concerns about trans men being assaulted in men’s shelters.
Load More Replies...Didn't expect so many positive comments this is a relief <3
If it makes you feel any better, I don't think the worry is about a trans individual. I think the worry is about cis males taking advantage of not being able to be questioned about why they are going to a women's bathroom, which is statistically the place where you will be attacked. Which is a huge problem that has nothing to do with the trans community and everything to do with a culture that encouraged men to victimize women.
https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/18973/pdf/ The UK Department of Justice's own figures show that not to be the case. A DOJ report from 2020 on convicted sex offenders in UK prisons as a percentage of the total prison population showed the following statistics: 16.8% (13,234/78,781) of male prisoners, 3.3% (125/3812) of female prisoners, and 58.9% (76/129) of female-identifying transgender prisoners were convicted sex offenders. Further, of those 76 transwomen, 36 had been convicted of rape and another 10 of attempted rape. So according to official government statistics, on a per capita basis transwomen prisoners are over three times more likely to be sex offenders than are men, and nearly twenty times more than are women. I know this comment will be downvoted to Hell but I am only quoting facts as laid out in the official government figures.

Gun owners overestimate the chance that they'll use the gun for self defense and underestimate the chance that the gun will be used to k*ll its owner.
You must be new here, lol. Bored Panda is notorious for using the silly pseudonym "unalived" in their posts.

Facts. My buddy has a few guns and he only ever wishes to shoot them at paper targets on his range. He told me that if he ever has to use one in self-defense, he will get rid of all of his guns because he won't he able to bring himself to touch a gun again.
Load More Replies...Biased anecdote but true anyway. My little sister, 19 was alone in the house when someone smashed her window out beside the front door, she heard it and ran down to see what the noise was when she saw a guy trying to break in. She pointed a gun at him and he ran away. After she called the cops to report the attempt they saw a wet yellow puddle on the porch.
Eh, I don't really expect to use my guns for self-defense. I'll use them to defend my animals from predators (mostly coyotes) or for hunting or for recreational shooting at the range
Facts and stats are readily available for all sides concerning our firearm concerns but many tend to only believe and accept the information that supports their team. If I were to say the the NRA was pushing for real gun safety and checks on gun sales back in the 1960s, mainly due to organizations like The Black Panther Party wanting the same 2nd Amendment rights as others, many here might say that is B.S. And those who feel that bump stocks, firearm muzzlers, or large ammo magazines are not covered by the 2nd Amendment may discover that our current court system may disagree with them. The concept of self protection by the need of multiple firearms says a lot about the U.S. versus other countries. The notion that "they" want to take all our guns away also says a lot about our U.S. politicians, the gun lobbyists, and the firearm owners who feel that they have a God given right in regards to guns. Stay safe boredpanda readers.
The stats sourced from a CDC-commissioned study finding that instances of defensive gun use occur between 60,000 and 2.5 million times per year. References to that study were deleted from the site following private meetings with gun control advocates in 2021. So a study that Obama ordered, the CDC found to be valid, was removed from the site by liberals who re-wrote history, facts and conclusions because it didn't fit their agenda. And some people still think the government works in our best interests.
Phil Hoyt, I understand your concern based upon the many interpretations of information on any CDC study. After this study, gun magazines, gun companies and political groups used these numbers from gun owners declaring what you are saying, that guns have been used to stop a lot of bad events from happening. I question as one should, how were the answers provided in this study verified? And what else pops up is the study stating defensive gun usage was between 60k and 2.5 mil. per year. The gap between those two numbers from a statistical data collection view should very concerning, period. My point is as stated earlier, which team can get the most mileage out of a study such as the one you speak of. Phil Hoyt, thank you for a great recap of the initial study.

And overestimate how many guns they need. My neighbor owns over 35. They're all handguns. He doesn't hunt. He works as a deli manager at a grocery store. It's only him and his wife in their extremely tiny 500 square foot house. None of these guns are antiques or collectibles. He says he needs them all so he can be ready if someone breaks into his house. He's a f'ing idiot. (And before anyone harps on me, I am pro-gun in a safe, responsible way. But over 35 is not safe or responsible when your only objective is to have them so you can stop a burglar.)
At that point it's just an enthusiast and collector. My father is the same way. I have exactly one gun , it's all I need and care to own.

People handing out m**ijuana edibles to kids on Halloween. Literally, no one does that. No one would be careless enough to do that. That s**t is expensive, and people want to get high off them.
1000% this. Your kid is more likely to OD on cough syrup than cannabis edibles.
100% of kids getting "tainted" Halloween candy is documented to be from family members, or someone the kid knows. All the "take it to a fire station to scanned with metal detectors" type of stories are 100% unfounded and basically urban legend.

I don't think every politician seems like an idiot. There are millions of normal people who get voted Mayor, or who work in local politics. Drowning in quicksand. I spent far too much time as a child thinking this was going to be an adult concern.
I got stuck in quicksand when I was 14 years old. That was the same year I got struck by lightning and bitten by a rattlesnake. Occasionally I just suddenly stop and think "Wow, my life has been so bizarre."
Fact, quicksand has a higher density than the human body so you will float. You can't drown in quicksand. Mythbusters tried it.
And for everyone curious - the Mythbusters-episodes are all being released for free on youtube now! Not all of them are online yet, but it's going to be all there!

There was a lady last month that got stuck in quicksand up to her waist and her husband was able to pull her out. It was at one of the NC beaches.

Being k*lled by a serial k*iller. I was a sociology major in college and in my Deviant Behavior class, this is what my teacher said at the beginning of a lesson about serial k*llers: "None of you will be k*lled by a serial k*ller. I'm telling you as a statistician that the likelihood of it is nil. Even the most prolific of serial k*ller's victims make up a fraction of a percent of people who die from m*rder."
Sadly you are much more likely to be k*lled by someone you know. same goes for sexual assault and trafficking. It's actually very unlikely to be a stranger.
Only people who ever tried to kill me DELIBERATELY, were people I knew personally.
Stats since 2000 show this is true for women. However, men are quite likely to be killed by strangers or random contacts. And even for women the small % victimized by strangers is increasing
In American schools you are much more likely to be killed by a frustrated male with a rifle who was taught at a young age to deal with any problems by using a gun.
There were 227 deaths last year from school shootings, which is a lot but still very very unlikely
Load More Replies...There are too many young people with machetes on the streets of the UK, and guns in the US, now to assume that it will be someone you know.
Serial killers, statistically speaking, are most likely to target children, prostitutes, or vagrants, folks most likely to go along with one without causing a fuss.
I was born at the same hospital where serial killer nurse Genene Jones practiced (and began killing) before she moved on to New Braunfels. Thank goodness I didn't need to be put in the neonatal unit because had I been, I would've most likely crossed paths with Jones as a defenseless newborn. I figure I've been living on borrowed time ever since.
even more terrifying when the law of averages isn't in your favor & you have a family member that was killed by a serial killer
Being thrown from a car during an accident, and coming out unharmed. I know people to this day that don't wear seatbelts because they think it's safer to be thrown out.
I have a state trooper friend. He said in a survivable accident, he has never pulled a dead body from a seat belt. But has picked up plenty of dead people, from the road who did not wear their seatbealt
Very good to hear. I mean, people can die even with a seat belt, but the risk is very much smaller.
Load More Replies...I remember this as an argument against seat belts back in the 1980s. I never understood it. For you to be thrown from a car, you must go through the windshield headfirst, shattering it and removing it with your head (and maybe some shoulder), then fly through the air, most likely landing on the same head that went through the windshield, on asphalt/concrete, at roughly the speed the car was travelling when it was hit (which has to be at least 30 mph to get you through the windshield). Why would anyone think you could survive that?
Not to mention that you become a projectile risking the safety of those around you. It is incredibly selfish.

This NEEDS to be higher up!!! My best friend's brother REFUSES to wear a seatbelt, I swear it's not a matter of IF; it's a matter or WHEN.
By what logic is being launched through a window out of a moving car and possibly into something (or just hitting the ground) safer?! JFC. A girl I knew growing up, her dad survived getting t-boned because he was sitting unbuckled in the back seat and was able to leap to the other side of the car. He was still a huge proponent of buckling up.
Depends on the car. Back in the 1930's and 40's with open wheeled cars, it probably was safer to be ejected from the vehicle, especially as they had a nasty habit of catching fire. In modern cars with airbags, crumple zones and side impact proctection, it is very much safer to stay in it.
My brother in law is a very smart man who had a friend burn alive in a car accident because he couldn't get his seat belt off, so now, 35 years later and with laws in place, he still refuses to wear a seat belt. Makes me crazy!
Random child abductions are extremely rare, most of the time it's one of the parents. Of course you should teach your kids stranger danger, but the way some parents behave they think there's kidnappers hiding behind every bush.
Even when it isn't one of the parents, it's usually some other adult the kid knows: relative, priest, scout leader etc.
Stranger danger teachings did more harm then his I think. Adults think kidnappers are every where. And kids think predators are creepy men in trench coats.
I'm sorry but the threat is real. I look back on my childhood and know there were no less than a dozen instances where I came into contact with potential abductors and paedophile. I was too innocent then to understand but I see it now. At least 4 instances included exposure of genitals by random men to me in public, I was between 6 years and 11 in these cases alone.
Nothing is ever zero. Whatnis most definitely true is that keeping kids inside and helicopter parenting them is contributing to mental and physical health issues that will take years off these children's life expectancy.
Load More Replies...Nobody says they don't and that it's wrong to teach your kids how to be safe. It's just that some people behave like it's a daily occurrence and they put an insane amount of fear in their children, sometimes forgetting that most kids are harmed not by strangers but by someone that they know. It's just a matter of balance. Teach your kids how to be safe of course, but be realistic about it

People often overestimate the chance of a plane crash, but the odds are about 1 in 11 million for a commercial flight.
And of those planes, you're in way more danger in a little private plane than in a commercial airliner. Yes, you're safer in a Boeing than in a Cessna.
Load More Replies...I met a retired airline pilot. I asked him if he had many close calls. He was quick to tell me his goal was to make a flight as boring and uneventful as possible. Then he followed that comment and told me of six near death experiences.
Add to that the fact that if you are in a plane crash the odds of surviving are about 95%
There’s a show called air disasters too that is very interesting and it shows all the ways that planes have crashed and how they solved and fixed it
There used to be a joke about bombs on planes - they said the chances of there being one were 1 in 1000, so take your own bomb, because the chances of there being TWO on board become 1 in a million.
I argue this point often. I feel way safer in a plane than on the interstate highways.
Less. 11m divided by the number on the flight. And not all crashes are fatal. Flight fatalities are higher than ground fatalities.
I know someone who's a flight attendant, and has been for years. Still alive and haven't heard her be in a plane crash... So far.
Because in a car you erroneously presume you have some inherent control, whereas in a plane you do not. The key is the dissonance between actual control over outcomes versus perceived.

Actually coming out ahead in gambling, if you do it often enough.
Of course, anyone with a decent brain knows that typical gambling is negative value every time, but if you do it often enough, it's even less likely that you'll come out ahead (as the number of events being looked at approaches infinity, the outcome will approach the mean - which is negative value).
That's one reason why if you put on a 'cheeky bet' and end up winning, just quit while you're ahead. Or don't bet in the first place (it's fine if you can consider it an entertainment expense, but all too many people try to use that as a justification when the truth is that they're really hoping to buck the odds, and the maths doesn't care about how much you wish it would bend to you).
We once went to Laughlin, not much to do at night. So I bit the bullet, gave my wife $20 (which she lost) and I played the Black Jack table with the same amount. My mom hops over the border to Nevada about once a year (only a couple hours drive to Wendover). She never takes anything she can't afford to lose and doesn't beet away any winnings. She usually comes back ahead. When she doesn't she just looks back at it as "I had a nice overnight vacation away from the stresses of life."
“The house always wins” isn’t just a saying. Professional gambling establishments very carefully manage the games so that they provide a consistent return percentage to the casino. Different games have different house returns, but they all favor the house gaining revenue, which means they favor the patrons losing money. The longer you play, the greater the likelihood that the casino will take all of your money.
I walked out of a casino up 750% - that $85 didn't buy much in Vegas 😅
Surviving after CPR. It's roughly 7-10% if you're outside the hospital, and even less when you're a senior citizen.
It's also very brutal, as many people aren't prepared to see 200 pound men putting their body weight onto grandpa and grandma's chest, breaking all their ribs, instead of just letting them pass peacefully.
Ill take the 7% Losing my mom at just 63 was incredibly painful. It’s heartbreaking to think that knowing CPR could have made a difference. I wish everyone had the opportunity to learn this lifesaving skill. It could mean the world to someone you love."
According to the American Heart Association, survival rates from CPR after a cardiac arrest vary widely depending upon the timing and location. If applied immediately the survival rate is around 40%, but most bystander administered CPR is often performed minutes after the event. After 4 minutes the survival rate drops below 10%. The issue is the time spent with a lack of oxygen to the cells, particularly to the cells in the brain, which start to die rather quickly. The biggest threat here is for a bystander to hesitate in performing CPR. Even if the heart is not re-started, the chest compressions keep the blood moving in the body and keep the brain alive. Hopefully for long enough for professional help to arrive.

I’ll take 50% tbh.
If CPR could have saved my husband last November, his quality of life wouldn't have been good. It was his 2nd stroke. I'm glad he went quickly without suffering or lingering on. That's no way to live
I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm also happy for you because you seem to have accepted it. Sending hugs!
Load More Replies...That last statement irks me. How about we save grandma then let her decide if she wants euthanasia or not...
because there's a very low chance that, if grandma drops dead on the street, CPR will save her. Imagine your grandma is dying, and instead of comforting her in her final moments, you sit on her, break all her ribs, and scream to call 911. This is why a lot of people have Do Not Resuscitate orders actually
Load More Replies...You have to die in the right way to have a chance of successful resuscitation. CPR works by re-establishing a correct heart beat-if you have ventricular fibrillation, then electric shocks can trigger that back to sinus rhythm. If you've suddenly collapsed because of a massive stroke, or you're in asystole or PEA, or you're dying of sepsis or massive haemorrhage, or cancer, resuscitation isn't going to work. A DNR order in hospital doesn't mean 'do not treat.' It means that the condition you have will continue to be treated, but should you take a turn for the worse, or you pass, they're not going to do CPR because it will ultimately be futile. There's research showing the majority of doctors would choose to have a DNR order in place if they were terminally ill with cancer.
No, it doesn't establish a correct heart rhythm. It provides oxygen profusion until someone arrives with the defibrillator to restore correct heart rhythm. In drowning some of the mechanical action helps push the water out.
Load More Replies...This is why I have a living will, I live so far from a hospital that the chances I would survive are minimal. The person most likely to find me is my daughter and I don't want her to have to attempt CPR, it would mess with her head if she tried it and it didn't work.
So what? You just stand by and let them "die peacefully"? Imagine it's a child! Or a young person! A friend of your own age!? That is just absolutely horrifying to imagine, that people read this and think "Oh well, I guess it's better I don't do anything while this person in front of me dies!". Not every death is peaceful. A heart-attack is PAINFUL!
My dad and I both survived after CPR. If ever find yourself in a situation where someone needs CPR, call 911 and then start CPR! You can't do anything that will hurt them more because they are basically already dead...but you will give them at least a chance to survive!
Becoming an Internet influencer.
Chinese influencer "farms" are a dystopian nightmare. influfamrs...d-jpeg.jpg
What's crazy is my 6 year Olds class made a book that the school printed of what they want to be when they grow up. Class of 20 and six wanted to be YouTube gamers. Influencer is the new police or firefighter with these kids.
YouTube gamers are hardly "influencers". They make videos of themselves playing video games and the better known ones are typically very good at it, similar to when you sit down in front of the TV every Sunday to watch football players playing football. They're at home playing games, getting better at it with each passing year, and see really exceptional gamers going from having little to having an incredible life because they're so good at gaming and talented at making it look entertaining (which involves another set of skills entirely). Of course they're going to want to follow that lead! It's similar to when their grandfathers idolized Joe Namath.

I agree with alot of us saying it requires an uncontrollable amount of luck, despite the quality of content. I'm a teacher and it k*lls me to hear how popular this idea has become lately. More so, how unfair and fickle it all seems to me at times. I see small youtubers poor their heart and soul into their content, like literally building an entire drift car project, but barely manage to build an audience. Other times I see what I believe are just e-beggers making millions from mediocre content, playing games poorly or worse people who simply steal content and do voice overs. Man, must be nice to make millions stealing internet videos and doing some obvious voice over narration but that's a whole different subject.

A friend of mine was trying to be a full time twich streamer some years back. He did get to where he was getting $300-400 / month from it - which sounds good if you ignore the fact he was putting crazy hours into it. He was hoping to get enough subscribers to break through to a higher level he never quite made that and finally gave up. He could make more money per hour of his time on any basic job.
The other big problem with that is that people who do that are often capitalizing on a hobby or something similar that they enjoy doing, so they think, why not monetize it? But when it's something that you *have* to do, your fun hobby becomes a *job*, and suddenly you realize it's not fun any more.

Both of these feature other peoples’ content. Even with the majority of her viewers being young girls between the ages of 6-13, the “Wolf” hasn’t been the greatest of role models. Yet, we have come across so many popular social media big names who've had to take a leave of absence for months, sometimes a few years or never come back, due to the stress and mental health effects. From what I understand, if you make it your full time career you become under contract with Youtube and their partner sponsors, to upload frequently, with high standards of quality, maintain a certain professionalism off-camera time, and maintain multiple social media platform accounts. I've heard of youtubers admitting they hadn't had a vacation in 2 years, with no weekend days off, and barely any holiday time, because their agent has put so much pressure on them and now they need a year or 2 off, and may not know if they're coming back. If you like your hobby, keep it just for fun.
I work with kids (mainly boys) on the autism spectrum and they all think they're going to be You Tube stars. It's very difficult to get them to understand how difficult (impossible?) it is to make a living from You Tube, and thus to get them to consider more viable careers.

Then the kid gets to 17-18 and realises that they aren't going to become Premier League footballers and doesn't know what to do next and their mental health suffers.

I think that becoming a millionaire in a pyramid scheme technically makes you a criminal, either guilty of fraud or an accesory to one...
Remember that every since ancient days, a pyramid has been a structure which housed a few rich but was constructed by the many poor.

Finding your soulmate
Imagine every person is a puzzle piece. There are 8 billion pieces. Do you think the 3-4 pieces you fit in perfectly with are going to be in your immediate area? Find one that’s close and make it work. There are plenty of remarkable pieces that fit pretty well even if they’re not the *one* and you might even make a neat picture in your tiny part pf the world.
I feel I came pretty close. I've had the same best friend for over 50 years now. I might lose her in the next year or so due to health issues but it's been a good run.
From someone who has been married 40+ years: you *become* each other’s soul mates. You don’t start out that way.
I disagree with this one. If you believe in soulmates, then of course you believe that everything in the universe has a reason and order and purpose, so of course you're going to find that soulmate 100%. I found mine! Of course, it's a lot easier when you work backwards - I found and married someone, then decided they were my soulmate, ha ha.
Weird how, out of 7 billion people in the world, so many find their "soulmate" sitting in the next cubicle over.
MY advice: marry someone close to your height, who shares the same indoor temperature preference, shares the same music preferences, and shares the same level of tolerance or intolerance of a few food crumbs left on the kitchen counter. After a few years of marriage, any differences in these things will lead to a divorce.

Being “awake” under anesthesia. People worry about it often thanks to Hollywood or a story someone told them. The reality is that true awareness under anesthesia is close to 1 in a million, and most anesthesiologists will never see it in their entire career. Real awareness under anesthesia means that you a paralyzed as the surgeon is actively working. It is traumatic and associated with PTSD.
People often say that they were “awake” under anesthesia, but this is usually due to a few things. Poor communication by the anesthesiologist — the patient thought they would be asleep, but they will only get sedation. They remember things prior to surgery — like being in the room, seeing the equipment, and/or having a mask on their face. This is fairly normal. Lastly sometimes patients say they “woke up early”. Some practices wake people up in the recovery area, but it’s also common for patients to be woken up in the room. Sometimes this occurs as a dressing is being applied. Again, this is normal.
It is really rare to have true awareness under general anesthesia. Good communication preoperatively helps patients to know what to expect during the surgery.
I have Pseudocholinesterase deficiency, a rare disorder that makes metabolizing succynicholine (a paralytic administered to a patient to allow the insertion of a breathing tube) take much longer than normal. It usually takes only about 15 minutes to wear off, which means that by the time surgery is finished, a person can be extubated and breathe fine on their own. But for me, it takes hours and hours to wear off. Unfortunately, because it's so rare, they don't regularly test for this issue beforehand. I found out the hard way; i.e. I was extubated after surgery but still completely paraylized. I couldn't breathe, nor could I speak or gesture to indicate that I couldn't breathe. But I was totally awake, and aware that I was suffocating. Luckily they monitor your vitals the whole time. Once they saw my oxygen level plummet, they immediately sedated and re-intubated me. It was more than 9 hours before I was able to breath on my own again. It was a terrifying experience.
Night terror stuff. So relieved that oxygen levels were noted and you were intubated on time.

Load More Replies...I had the opposite. Was told I was just going to be sedated heavily for an endoscopy. Was freaking out because I didn't want to be awake for it. Apparently heavily sedated is just as good as full under for me. They said we're sedating you now and I might as well have just blinked and I was in the recovery room.
When I got surgery for my broken leg I was awake, I got what I think is called an epidural. The weird thing is that as I stopped being able to feel things from the waist down my brain held onto the last memories of what I had felt before it kicked in. So even if I could see them lifting my leg up in the air I could "feel" it lying down on the operation table.
An epidural is also called a spinal block. That sounds like a really weird sensation! I was technically awake for my last eye surgery. I was given a light sedation rather than a general anaesthetic (because I had an anxiety attack coming out of my last one) and I could hear the conversation through the whole surgery, including the nurses gossiping. I wasn't in pain, but I could feel the pressure of them probing my eye, which was weird. I am very interested in medical procedures so I felt lucky to have experienced it actually.
Load More Replies...I woke up during a minor procedure, but that was because the doctor decided to not give me anesthesia. I was 8 and asleep. He figured that was good enough. On the bright side, he was so afraid of being sued. We never had to pay our hospital bill.
Turns out I have a paradoxical reaction to Versed and am prone to serotonin surge. Found this out during pre-op sedation. Twice previously, I’ve been able to recount the conversions of my surgery team whilst they were performing the procedures on me along with describing features of the operating room. Now that my Versed issue is in my chart and I recount past procedures to the surgeon and anesthesiologist, surgery for me is as it’s supposed to be. No recollection.
One in a million? I've woken up under anesthesia three times (two during the same procedure). If I have to be a ridiculous outlier, can't it be for picking winning horses or something?

You want a new song that sounds like a Taylor Swift pop piece? AI can do that too. Did you read that new horror novel that's like a Stephen King work but personally tailored to you, the reader? It's great, too bad he's now out of work. Our great artists will fall by the wayside, because for as much as the techbros in silicon valley espouse that AI is "just a tool," people are using that tool for the art itself. A lot of people here are falling for the logical fallacy of small probabilities. "Since the probability of x is so small, it's an invalid fear". But while the probabilty of you dying today, for example, is small, according to some sources,166,859 people still die every day, the probability of you dying today is modulated, in part, by your choices and behaviors, and the probability that you will die eventually is 100%. A lot of things affect only a small percentage of the population but their absolute numbers are still high enough to be significant issues. Covid is a good example of this. Most people did not become seriously ill or die of covid even before the vaccination but covid was still a public health nightmare due the strained community resources and took an unprecedented number of lives. .

Prion Disease, or CJD -- you don't need to eat contaminated meat or otherwise be exposed. We all have about a one-in-a-million chance of spontaneously developing one.
The one from meat is vCJD, it was nvCJD when I wrote a research paper on it. It is contracted from BSE infected cows. Other versions are iatrogenic, hereditary, and sporadic. Sporadic is most common because all unknown causes are lumped into that category, so it is considered "spontaneous".
Theoretically, it can be acquired spontaneously by a high fever affecting the brain. High temperatures are probably necessary for the initial protein misfolding.
Load More Replies...There's something similar called Kuru and it's contracted by eating people. There was a cannibalistic tribe in Papua New Guinea (IIRC) that used to practice eating of their loved ones after they died and the fattiest and choicest pieces were given primarily to the women and kids and it was mostly those who developed this disease that eventually killed them. Which then they'd be eaten by their family and village and the cycle would continue. I believe it was two white researchers who figured it out and prevented the tribe from being wiped out due to this disease as they stopped the practice and no one else was ill.
They also needed to get the Fore to trust them enough to believe their explanation of the disease and why they needed to stop cannibalism, not because they were being judged as bad for doing it but because it was dangerous and would keep killing their children. It was a very cool example of a combination of medicine and cultural anthropology needing to come together. Dr Alpers ended up obtaining the sample of brain tissue that allowed his German research collaborator to confirm the presence of the prion and perform primate testing to confirm how it was being transmitted

There's some medical procedures that can expose you too, right? Not a clinician but I help patients fill out their health history forms sometimes at the hospital where I work, and in the CJD section there's questions about whether you've had a dura mater graft or human growth hormone injections
This is what my grandmother died from, at the time her doctors thought it was probably due to her eating offal during the war.
Statistics is a little b***h Statistically you are more likely to die in a car than a plane because you are more likely to be in a car than a plane. You are statistically more likely to die in a 1km vicinity of your own home than anywhere else in the world because you are statistically more likely to be near your own home than anywhere in the world. See where I'm going? Edit to add, my comment was for a different post, no idea how it wound up here
Everything that you're worried and anxious about.
I have major surgery tomorrow. This is likely accurate, but did I really need three separate appointments and a half dozen handouts about all the things that could go wrong...?
I am anxious and worried I will feel chronically physically and mentally ill for the rest of my life and never get to accomplish anything I want to. Cause it's been going on for 18 years and it's literally coming true with every day that passes.
What I'm worried about and anxious about these days is mice, and catching hantavirus, and having to move out with not enough money to pay rent + deposit + movers, or worse, having nowhere to move to because of bad credit I'm trying to dig myself out of.
Well, one thing I'm anxious about has a just shy of 50% chance of happening, but odds are diminishing daily
Making money at a casino. If you go, go to have fun and keep your losses to a specific number. If you think you’ll make money, absolutely do not go.
I have a set amount that I will put in (I only go every once in a blue moon when my mom wants to go, we live in Reno.) If I go over that amount, I cash out and pocket the over and maybe continue playing. There have been a few times I have walked out with about $1500.
This goes for any kind of gambling, gacha machines, games like genshin impact (a gacha game), anywhere you pay money to get something random, do it for fun not the prize, my mom always gets cheap lottery tickets because she knows she won't win and it's just a fun thing for me and her to do one rode trips
Poker is the only real way to win money at a casino. IF you're a good poker player.
Modern casinos make money before you start to bet. And then dont stop. Directly and indirectly. Even mcdonalds is hard to buy in las vegas to ensure high food prices are the norm
The person most likely to k*ll you is... yourself. More people die from s****de than from wars, natural disasters combined
copy/past of my other comment but here is data I found. -- I was going to say false but this appears to be true. WITH the distinction of "from wars and natural disasters". NOT as compared to all deaths. I found a 2019 number for worldwide suicide a bit over 700,000. I also found "According to the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development, more than 526,000 people die each year due to violence associated with armed conflict and criminality. " (average, it goes up and down) - And the internet tells me "The number of people killed by natural disasters varies from year to year, but on average, between 40,000 and 60,000 people die each year globally" Add those up and worldwide you get 100,000+ more from suicide than from wars and natural disasters.

I guess a lot of young dudes will hate me for that, but Im truly sure that nowadays it is a chance of becoming a famous rapper starting from zero, it's possible if you already have money and professional production behind you, but it's impossible to become a star from your parents' bedroom, sorry.
I would say it takes a ton of luck unless you already have connections. The right people have to see you and the chance of that happening on Tik Tok or YouTube is extremely slim.
Look up Ren, independent British artist who has built up his success from scratch. Really really hard work but possible
Telling people to look up this person most of us have never heard of means that he in fact did not become particularly famous.
Load More Replies...Honestly with the massive changes in the distribution channels, I think that chance has been upgraded from infinitesimal to minuscule.
Well, I look at it this way...just do it. Even if you're not famous, it does take you places you've never seen and experiences you'll never give up for anything.
Music in general. But you still can be in the shadow and make honest money, like my friends band. Little notoriety, but 1600€/month for each of them like an employee and able to live ( in France I precise). It's an harder job than being employed though
Name a rapper who has a long term successful enduring carreerfor several decades at tge top. Filling the sphere? But talent can be created in a bedroom. But rappers and talent arent always the same
Aliens want to visit and trade with us as friends.
Aliens visited some time ago and then went "nevermind" and flew off.
If aliens visit in the future, they'll see the insane tik tok people and be like wtf bye

The universe is incomprehensiblely massive and as far as we know life in the universe is rare and the absolute speed limit of speed of light is unavoidable. I absolutely believe life exists in other places in the universe but the odds intelligent life exists close enough that we will ever encounter it is very unlikely.
Most likely interstellar travel is massively impractical for anyone less than a Kardashev 1 civilization If there are even a few hundred of them in the whole galaxy, the nearest one is 1000LY away. Lot of empty star systems in all that empty space.
If they're prepared to wait a million years to get to their destination? A robotic craft with stem cells in suspended animation (frozen or dehydrated).

Making enough money to ever feel financially stable in todays economy.
I retired 5 years early. I think I'm stable - which, I guess, reduces the chances for the rest of you :)
And when you make enough money to be financially stable, you will be paranoid about losing it.
This is a load of BS. One in ten families in the USA make more than $200,000 a years. One in five families make more than $150,000 a year. One in five individuals makes more than $100,000 a year by the age of 35, and by the age of 50 1/4 of all individuals are makeing six figure salaries. Finally, one in fifty of individuals over the age of 50 are making over $500,000 a year. So not THAT rare at all.
And 11% of the population lives below the poverty line. Plus, making $100,000 a year doesn't mean you are financially stable. Most of the jobs that pay that high are in major cities, with sky high cost of living.

In the US, a constitutional amendment. It’s virtually an impossibility at this point.
Most people think amendments cant or should not be amended. The 2nd A was an amendment and could just as easily be amended out or modified to use present day circumstance. Slavery was amended out. Its quite easy if intelligence is used. Courts focus of preserving what was once right and should be made to consider change to meet present needs
Amendments can even be repealed. The 18th Amendment (Prohibition) was.

Hitting the jackpot on a slot machine.
I have hit a number of them when I lived in Vegas. The last time after I finished shopping at a Von's. I had done pretty good the day before, so I slipped a $100 bill into a ten play, triple bonus machine. It dealt me 4 aces with a 2 kicker. People walked by and said "oh you hit a Royal (the usual jackpot) I said "No, I hit 10 of them!". The room started going sideways on me as they counted out the $10,000 onto my hand.
Jackpots used to be significant in las vegas. Now they may be $10k and that is if you bet big each time. Las vegas indicates tge scams in these machines. They pay like.
Themselves living to 100.
The trick is to get to 130. Then you are set. Have you ever heard of a 130yo dieing?
The universe is going to let me live to 100 to spite me as I can afford to retire about three weeks after I die
Well, I'm almost 3/4 of the way. Never thpuht (thought)(fingers got confused) I'd make it this far.
Looking around at the world today, I don't want to live to be 100 - let alone 130! I've been told I'm going to live until I'm 92, and I shall die in bed, at home, with all my faculties... I asked her if there was going to be room in the bedroom for all those faculties - I hear that the medical faculty is pretty big, and as for the humanities faculty! (rolls eyes in horror), I might just have to build a hall onto the bedroom... :/
My great-grandma did it. Was doing great up until a couple of years before her death. I thought she'd make it to 101, but her health declined. she had an awesome centennial birthday. died the day biden was elected president (i think she would have been in favor of biden but i never asked)
Any one of the natural disasters big enough to create any real extinction event. Super random, rare and not likely in your life by the current projections.
Plus one of my state's mountains already blew up in my lifetime (Mt. St. Helens). It would be rude of Mt. Baker to blow up without waiting longer.
Honestly, that Cascadia Subduction Zone is probably your biggest threat there. And when it does eventually go, that'll wake up your volcanoes, too.

Oh yay! Add that to war in the Middle East, dictators popping up left and right, human rights being violated over and over, uncountable (and not-reported-much) wars in several African countries, d**g-problems all over the world, human-made climate-change and all that follows.... I'm really a glass-half-full person, but damn, I'm getting real anxiety whenever I open a newspaper

Except for the one humans have complete control over. World War III. Ever since the 60s we've had the power to cause our own massive extinction event.
Where we think we will be in 10 years.
In 10 years? I'll settle for being alive and in reasonable health. As long as we're dreaming, let's also say neither homeless nor broke.
For me, most likely DEAD!!! The estimated life expectancy of an 80 yr old woman today is 89.
I'll still be working, can't retire fir 15 1/2 years...but it's getting closer
With my various health concerns, I will be thrilled to be where I am, alive that is,in 10 years.
A sinkhole opening under you house.
Yes, the odds increase/decrease depending on where one lives.

I've been here for about 14 years and have never heard of any in my area, but it's still in the back of my mind. I read on some website that West Central Florida is very prone to them. That's where I'm at. It's more on my mind when it rains really heavy for a prolonged amount of time, like during a hurricane.

I emigrated 8 000 miles and met a guy that was born in the same hospital as me, on the same day, in the same year! We were born about half an hour apart. I met him when I was in my fifties.
My HS boyfriend drove by my then current house more than 30 years after we last saw each other. I live in the complete opposite side if town now. Grew up in the south area, now live northwest area. Its unreal when you consider our town (Houston) has literally millions of people. I was sitting on my porch reading early in the morning. Now I'm in touch again with his whole family.
Moved from PA to FL, one day a car drove by our front yard and asked directions - they were neighbors from PA!!! Bro and wife were at Disney in CA (were HS sweethears in FL) and ran into HS classmates there. Sometimes odd things just happen.
Ran into someone I knew as a kid but hadn't spoken to in years in a small cafe on a crowded street in a huge city an ocean away from where we live.
Happened to my best friend overseas who ran into another student in our graduating class.

The good news is turbulence is extremely unlikely to cause a crash, and becomes less likely the bigger the plane is. It’s hard to damage a plane by dropping altitude alone and the bigger the plane, the more force it would take to impact it, especially enough to be a problem. It still doesn’t make turbulence fun, but might help with any anxiety
