If you're interested, there's a book named The Color of Law that details many ways that racial segregation in housing in the US has been codified into law at the federal level. From segregated and unequal access to public housing in the 30s, exclusionary HOA policies, zoning reinforcing property values, open discrimination and lending policies... I can't quite the whole book, but it was very eye-opening to see how rampant practices in an "equal" society has contributed to past and current access to "the American dream " Very interesting read.

That doesn't matter Scrapiechick. White people still benefit from a society that caters to them in ways they don't for people of color. Doesn't matter if the white person is rich or not. White people are still privileged for being white. But your white fragility is showing.

Of course not; my family started out on SNAP when I was a little kid, and now my mom owns a house worth more than half a million. But statistically speaking, a greater percentage of POC and Indigenous families are at or below the poverty line than white folks. POC/Indigenous families especially struggle in America because the system is institutionally geared toward cis het white men getting the best over any other group of people.

But being a poor white person does not in fact approximate the minority experience because it's still much easier to get out of poverty as a white person. There are in fact privileges available to white people just by virtue of being white. That privilege consists of not having to deal with racism, whether intentional or systemic.

@Mary Rogers Nobody is trying to approximate anything. We're all just trying to get through life the best we can. Some have money, some don't. It's hard, I know. I'm white and I was homeless for a while, but I never blamed anyone but myself for it, and in the end, I pulled myself up and out. All this BS about 'white privilege', special 'white-only' opportunities and how hard it is to be this race or that race, is a real slap in the face to anybody else who lives or has lived in poverty. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are Arabian countries who look down on people of African origin and call them deragotory racist names. One might be forgiven for thinking that the Sheikhs and Sultans of the desert enjoyed a certain amount of your 'privilege' considering how oil-soaked the region is, and yet, mysteriously, they are never mentioned. If you want to know real privilege, maybe you should start there. Or are you only attacking white people? Because I think there's a word for that.

@Scag$y I am not attacking white people. I am white myself. I am also poor. I am disabled. I honestly don't know why it is offensive to point out that racism still exists. That says nothing bad about the good white people who are not racist and only says something about those that are.

@Mary Rogers Agreed. I'm a disabled white mother living in poverty, and I'm not blindly ignorant or bigoted enough to think that I have it worse than POC or Indigenous women in similar circumstances.

@Mary Rogers I never said that it was offensive to point out that racism still exists. I abhor racism in ALL it's forms. The offensive part is trampling all over the lived experience of white people living in poverty by speaking of 'white privilege' and how easy it is for them to climb out of poverty. I was beaten up and mugged by a gang of black men because I was white and on their turf. There has been a spate of anti-Asian assaults in the US carried out by POC. This isn't about privilege. This is about basic intolerance and hatred. People being unable to live peacefully next door to someone of a different race. Can you not see that by telling the world how 'easy' it is to be white you are only stoking the fires of hatred against the white person? It isn't easy being a POC in poverty. Nor is it any easier being a white person in poverty. Trust me, all races get along just fine in the queue for the food bank.

It's casual racism, please stop enabling it. Being an apologist isn't good, and I doubt you'd be happy to see it go the other way.

Or maybe an increasing number of African Americans are recognizing the systemic racism that makes their lives harder than those of white people in similar circumstances.

Yes, Rob. You are correct. Because they take even the mention of racism personally, even though no one is accusing all white people of being racist. Looks like I am about to be banned. But I don't care. I stated the truth. As a white person I used to believe we lived in a post racial society as well, but the past few years have opened my eyes to the truth and I am rather embarrassed that I used to believe that.

@Carl Then you don't know what Critical Race Theory IS. It does not say that. Systemic racism DOESN'T refer to people. It refers to SYSTEMS. There is no such thing as a "systemic racist." I suggest that you familiarize yourself with these ideas instead of jumping to conclusions about what they mean.

I'm sorry are you referring too the government policy that is currently in place that cost many good quality businesses their contracts and staff jobs because decision to impliment minimum 5% indigenous people businesses. Or the scholarship system that puts in place more scholarships for race and genders that already have high participation. etc etc etc. In fact, the CRT says that All whites are racist, not because of individual actions or behaviors, but _systematically_ because they are white therefore racist. ie it is, itself, the very pinnacle of systemic racism.
