From Mariah Carey to Wham!, we all have our own particular favorite song when it comes to Christmas.
While some of us may enjoy a traditional carol or two, the rest of us can be found singing along to ‘White Christmas’, ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ or one of three versions of Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’.
Christmas hits nowadays can be seen as a bit of a cash-in as history can show that there’s plenty of money to be made with a Christmas hit (Mariah Carey reportedly has earnt $60m from ‘All I Want For Christmas’ alone), there was a lot more story behind the festive hits back in the day.
For example, Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ was concocted in Summer 1984 during a visit to George Michael’s parents. The melody of the track just came to him and, well, the rest is hit-tory. In fact, many disagree that the track is even festive. The only nod to Christmas is in the title and chorus and, in fact, it’s only mentioned retrospectively then anyway.
Here’s some more musical history to get you in the festive feels.
