The Reasons Why School Kills My Creativity
1. I have certain talents and abilities that I realize school has no place for. Art, music, Crafts, Building are elective subjects and we are not encouraged to take. They are considered of non-valid importance.
2. We are awarded marks for factual information. We are not allowed to expound or re-design knowledge, but only reproduce content we are taught. In my case History was a boring factual lesson, but reading just a Dan Brown’s book converted me to an enthusiastic lover of History! See why in my article “10 reasons why I adore Dan Brown” located on my blog “Thinking Teen”. Why can’t they teach us History like that?
3. The syllabi in play are not relevant to the changing world setups which means that I fail to draw relation with the ideologies I have to conform to in class. I am not encouraged to have my own narrative or create something that will inspire my passion. It is always somebody’s else’s passion that I don’t quite understand.
4. We are not allowed to Think outside-the-box. Thinking what we are thinking is not awarded. We have to think their way! Otherwise they tell as our imagination is very active.
5. We are forced not to think freely. We have to consume without question. We consume knowledge rather than think creatively.
6. We have to obey rules, so we are inhibited in terms of freedom we have to make decisions out of critical and creative thinking. Even for the way our school should run.
7. We feel very “down” because of the routine. We feel not at all creative.
8. We are treated as if we are similar. Some circumstances that inspire my creativity are boring for an other student and vise versa.
9. We do not feel that the basis of the school is our talents. School rather prefers to inject pre-selected material in our minds. Would it start from our talents it would take as high as the sky!
10. We are persuaded that everything has one answer. But this is not what happens in life. This way we are intimidated to think more.
11. We are supposed to be like a “Standard” student. This standard has nothing to do with my talents and abilities, my way of learning, my different understanding and I feel like an outcast.
12. We are supposed to pass tests to succed in school. In a way it is like nothing before the test matters. Usually we forget everything the day after the test. We just…”pretend” to know, after pushing ourselves to learn the night before the exams.
13. We are treated with condemn when we show curiosity and imagination. It seems as if we damage the ‘perfect’ classroom when we think that way.
