What do you do when you’re stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic? Well, as a visual artist, you scrounge around with the materials you have at home and make something CRAZY!

This sculpture came to me in a dream. I WANTED to make it out of ceramics – but since nothing is open, I decided to make it out of cardboard and paper mache. I ran out of paper mache and had to use the old-fashioned flour & water technique. I used old newspapers for the feathers, but I ran out of black paint for the feathers, so I used some shoe polish I figured I wouldn’t need for a few months!

Hope it makes you smile – I know it made ME smile to make it!

The Mad Hatter’s Rooster – if there had also been a ROOSTER at Alice’s Tea Party …

Step 1: make a teapot out of cardboard. Thank GOODNESS for the internet for offering suggestions on how to make a paper teapot!

Step 2. Cardboard teacups. The hexagonal ones were EASY – the ROUND ones, not so much!

Step 3. Because it was important that the teacups were precariously balanced, ended up using a small piece of PVC pipe and a wire coat hanger to anchor them.

I used old spoons for the handles – broke the spoon part off, and then hot-glued them to the cups.

Made the rooster from one round and one long balloon, paper mache’d. The rooster’s legs, combs and beak were made of cardboard covered with strips of paper towel for texture.

The finished rooster. There are probably 400-500 feathers made of newspaper torn into “feather” shapes. I used wire to strengthen the tail feathers.
