I've spent the last few summers going to Iceland and photographing their native horse breed, the Icelandic horse. It is believed to be the oldest horse breed in the world. It is also one of the purest horse breeds in the world. This is because the breed has been isolated on the island for over 1000 years.
The first horses were brought to the island by the Vikings and since then, no new horses have been brought to the island. When the Vikings first arrived in Iceland, they could only bring a limited amount of horses. Therefore, only the best horses were brought to the island.
These horses might not be very big in size but they are mighty. They are very powerful and they have a great temperament. Enjoy these pictures of this beautiful breed in their home, the volcanic island of Iceland.

I have the hide of an Icelandic horse. My mom gave it to me. She and my grandparents used to live there. I'd rather have the actual horse though. A little fyi about Icelandic horses: Once they are transported out of the country, for any reason, they can never be returned. It's to prevent importing any kind of disease that could sicken or kill the native herds. Also, no other horse breeds are allowed in Iceland. This is to keep them 100% purebred.
