Reminds me of an observation I made some years ago. My husband and I spend our childhoods in poverty. He and I remember many times our parents and we gave a part of the little we had to people more in need. No matter how tight you were, if someone you know was struggling more, you'd help - even if it was just a warm meal. Now that we've worked ourselves up to middle class with most people around us stemming from those, I realize that many of them would never even think about that (apart from that one donation before Christmas maybe). Instead there's a lot of, "Well, they could get a job"-phrases coming up. My husband once interrupted a colleague saying stuff like that and the only reaction was a confused look. Sometimes I find this quite disturbing
