Teacher Allegedly Outed A Closeted Teen Over A School Trip—Then Her “Foolproof” Rooming Plan Backfired

A teacher allegedly tried to stop a closeted teenager from sharing a hotel room with friends by creating what she thought was a “foolproof” plan.

Instead, the bizarre arrangement allegedly exposed his s**uality to an entire student organization, while the teacher’s attempt to control the situation ended up backfiring.

A caller named Chris shared the story during the September 11, 2026, episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.

Speaking about an experience from when he was 16, Chris recalled how the alleged breach of privacy was followed by a series of contradictions that left him feeling as though he was “on trial for both not being gay and being gay.”

In the episode titled “Armchair Anonymous: Bad Teacher,” Chris recalled that he was 16 and still closeted when his high school DECA adviser pulled him aside.

Although some of his friends knew he was gay, he said neither his parents nor his teachers knew, leaving him “very caught off guard” when the adviser directly asked about his s**uality.

“The first thing out of my mouth was, ‘What? Why does this matter?’” Chris said.

According to his account, the adviser told him that if he was gay, he would not be allowed to room with his friends from another school because they “could also be gay and we could all potentially have s*x together.”

Chris said he initially thought she was joking.

But when he questioned why the same concern did not apply to students at his own school, he said the adviser continued to insist that his s**uality made the rooming arrangement different.

He then asked whether he could room with two female friends from his school, and the adviser immediately said no.

When he asked why, she allegedly replied, “Because we can’t prove you’re gay.”

Chris described the logic as a “real catch-22,” explaining that he was being treated as though he might be gay when the school wanted to restrict his rooming options, but as though his s**uality could not be confirmed when he suggested an alternative.

“I was like, ‘Okay, you’re on trial for both not being gay and being gay,’” he recalled.

Chris said the four advisers involved in the trip eventually decided that he would room with two random boys from another school in the district.

He claimed they would not tell him who the boys were until the group arrived at Disney World for the competition.

The plan seemed to assume Chris might have intimate relations with someone he knew, despite his repeated attempts to explain that the arrangement made little sense.

“I could go hook up with this guy in his room if I really wanted,” Chris said, pointing out that “assigning him to strangers did not eliminate the possibility” the advisers were supposedly trying to prevent.

The hosts, Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, also questioned the logic.

Chris noted that straight students could potentially have physical relations during the trip as well, making the focus on his s**uality feel particularly targeted.

He eventually accepted the new room assignment because he did not feel he had many options.

“I kind of accepted the new room assignments,” he said. “I was kind of like, ‘Okay, well, I don’t really have anyone to talk to about this because I wasn’t out to my parents.’”

The situation reportedly became even more damaging when Chris learned that the adviser had shared his s**uality with other students who were on the trip.

“She ended up telling basically everyone that was going to internationals with us,” he said. “So now 15 of these people know that I’m gay.”

Chris said the information quickly spread throughout the DECA organization and eventually reached students at the other school.

“I was just kind of like, ‘Okay, you’ve kind of just spilled my secret to everyone for what was the point of this?’” he recalled.

Shepard summarized the effect by saying the adviser had “scarlet lettered” him, a description Chris agreed with.

Although Chris said the experience is now something he can tell as a funny story, he made clear that it was difficult at the time.

However, the adviser’s plan took an unexpected turn once the students arrived at their destination.

Chris said he met his two new roommates on the first day, and the next morning, one of them woke up to Taylor Swift’s Delicate playing from his alarm.

Chris asked the boy whether he was gay.

The boy said no, but Chris later discovered that he came out on Instagram three years afterward and is now openly gay.

“I was going to say I hope this is a meet-cute,” Padman joked during the conversation.

Chris said the coincidence made the adviser’s attempt to prevent him from rooming with someone he knew seem even more absurd.

The arrangement had been built around assumptions about his s**uality, yet the school had no way of knowing anything about the private lives of the students it assigned him to.

He later used the experience in his college essay, which became the way he eventually came out to his parents.

The story also raises broader questions about student privacy and educator ethics.

Coming out is a personal decision, and researchers have linked involuntary disclosure to poorer mental-health outcomes among LGBTQ+ young people.

A 2024 study of more than 9,000 s**ual and gender-diverse adolescents found that those who were outed to their parents reported more depressive symptoms and less LGBTQ+ family support than those who were not outed.

While the study did not specifically examine teachers or school trips, it underscores why educators should avoid treating a student’s s**uality as something to investigate, share, or use to make assumptions about their behavior.

Psychologists and researchers emphasize that being outed by a teacher can be particularly damaging because it can break students’ trust in teachers and advisers while taking away their autonomy over when and how they disclose their identity.

In some cases, involuntary disclosure can also place young people in unsafe or hostile home environments, potentially exposing them to physical a**se, conversion practices, or homelessness.
