For what i see, its more like both father and mother do not work together as they are rowing against each other and the boat does not move in any way (physics and assuming both parents have equal strength), and the kid is stuck with them in the middle of the waters which the mum probably got hold of the kid to her side. But ultimately they all cant progress anywhere else than be stuck in their current situation

Maybe the picture actually illustrates the unfairness of winning custody, an innocent child losing her father, caused by her parents bad decisions.

I think this represents a tug of war with the child feeling stuck outside the situation.

I find it is like this in marriage also, it was always me and the kids.......and then the dad

I see it more as the power that are usually given to men through the paternal figure, the man who is bringing the money to the household (yes I know most of women work today, but I just try to explore some clichés), when actually it's the woman who is in charge of everything. Or maybe I'm just projecting because it was like that in my family :))
