You may have thought given the dangers a young family in the animal kingdom can face that there would be no time for a quiet moment of love or tenderness but, as these beautiful images show, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

    Did you know that elephant mothers carry their young for almost two years before giving birth? They are said to have a 22 month long pregnancy and at times may induce labour by eating certain plants. The average weight of their babies at birth clocks in at an estimated 250 pounds (17st) – for carrying that load, they certainly deserve their super mom status.

    Fierce and forceful, female otters take the task of protecting their young against intruders very seriously. When sourcing food, mother otters often wrap their pups in strands of their kelp to ensure that they don’t drift off. If danger is sensed they are likely to grasp their young by the loose skin of their necks as they flee to safety.

    Female kangaroos, also known as ‘does’ have the ability to control when they will be pregnant – we’re sure that’s something most women would love to be able to do. Joeys (kangaroo offspring) are born only 30 days after conception, which is why their mothers’ pouches are so important. Joeys are generally still in a rather fragile state of development after birth and are able to suck milk from their mother’s pouch. Should their young get lost, they are said to spend a substantial amount of time searching for them without eating – sound familiar?
