After Accidentally Showing Up For A Microsoft Job Interview A Month Early, This Student Shares Her Emails

Job interviews are rough – definitely a stressful event for all of us, especially if you’re applying for your dream job. Unfortunately, not everything in life goes as smoothly as we’d like to and we all do something embarrassing and cringe-worthy from time to time. This 21-year-old student recently shook up Twitter with her interview hilarious mix-up. The applicant was invited to do a job interview for Microsoft on February 18th. But Laura was so eager to get the job – she decided to show up for it a little bit earlier. A whole month, actually.

Laura, a 21-year-old Scottish student was invited to do a job interview via Skype with Microsoft’s University Recruitment team

The team offers students a chance to work a full year for the company. The Skype interview was scheduled for 18th of February. As Laura mentioned to the media, she was very eager to get this job.

Laura was so excited that when the 18th of January came, she assumed it was… February

The student mentioned to the media that she’s a very organized person and had spent the morning of that day prepping herself for the interview. She even had mock interviews with her family, to feel even more prepared. The interview was scheduled for 11 a.m., so when the clock turned to 11:15, Laura went into panic mode.

She thought that something must be not be working properly, as she was still waiting anxiously for her 11 a.m. interview, so she sent out an email

The recruiter then kindly replied to her, reminding that the interview was to take place on the 18th of February

To which Laura replied: “It is the 18th of February”

A few minutes later, a reply from the team came reminding once again, the actual date

“What made it all worse was that my birthday is the 14th of February, so somehow I had managed to skip turning 22,” she said jokingly. Laura’s now worried whether she may have accidental sabotaged her potential job opportunity: “I thought Microsoft would think I am an idiot. I quite frankly wanted to disappear into thin air. Hopefully, Microsoft will see the humorous side to this whole mix-up,” she added.

Laura later posted her family’s reaction to the hilarious misunderstanding

Nevertheless, a lot of other people has their own embarrassing moments to share, which turned out to be not so bad

But of course, when people on Twitter see an opportunity to joke – they do it all too well

But no matter what the future may bring for this student, we’re all wishing the very best to Laura and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that she gets the job!

So...she knew when the interview was, she just forgot what month she was currently living in. And when her birthday was... yikes.

I am an IT manager, i can hire and fire, she seems nice and all but my only gripe would be someone mixing up a whole month like this, where is your head?, in my area/workload, inputting the wrong date in a computer system could be a disaster.

This girl was not stupid, it's just her nerves got the best of her. And who's wouldn't, having an interview wity such a big, important company like Microsoft! She's stressed and nervous, NOT STUPID!!

Sorry but stress is part of many jobs, stress doesn't equal stupidity, when i hire one of the main things i watch for in the probation period is how they handle stress, if they get frazzled, angry or simply can't handle it, it's a big no-no from me. Many jobs that require intelligence, skills and qualifications are synonymous with stressful jobs. If you get stressed enough to be out by a month at the interview stage that is a bad sign, Microsoft are known to be fair but hard employers.

Yeah, have been going through some seriously difficult times in the last couple of years and was desperately trying to get work as a full time teacher. I'd been teaching for nearly 20 years and have 2 teaching licenses. But my mom got sick and passed away. Then I had a non-stop series of horrible things happen that I couldn't control. I nearly became destitute. I did work as a sub as much as I could but t I almost lost my house twice! I showed up a week early for a job interview for a position I really, really wanted. It was the third time they had an opening. I prepped the lesson so hard and went over whatever mistakes I thought I'd made in the previous interviews I'd had, sent my lesson to another teacher friend who gets accolades at her job...arrived a week early. Nope, didn't get the job either. Things finally lightened up slightly. I did finally get a full time position, with 4 preps (I teach 4 different classes a day to 7-8th). It's crazy, insanely hard but at least I have work!

Ah yes. I've done this as well, back in 2007. I had qualified in the top few in an international comic-book contest, and part of the thing was free tickets to San Diego Comic-con as a professional as well as travel expenses. I had been notified via phone and the original email had the wrong date, saying "June" instead of "July". This was fixed in follow-up emails, but I had gotten so fixated on the "June" date, because I had to get an US visa and fix a million things before I left, that I only realised as I was checking in into my hostel in the Gaslight Quarter that I was one month early... As it happened, this was for the better, because not only did get to visit San Diego properly, but I befriended the owners of the hostel and managed to get lodging in exchange for art for the hostel at a time when everything had already been booked solid all through Comic-Con...

Heart beating at a faster rate, comes upto larynx. Tongue dries and loves to mate with palate. Brain squeezes itself to land between ears, creating a void upstairs. Animated eyes, each independently trying to focus on the calendar, wrist watch, mobile, pc monitor, camera lens, wall clock - all at the same time. Mind intelligently warning about impending tech disaster, blood alienating palm making it cold, dry and sensitive. Stomach sticking to your spine. Even liquid fails to pass through beyond your lips. Bladder screaming every minute to dump two drops. Ahhh...remember to get into an undergarment before the interview, as if interviewer has x-ray eyes over internet or whatever. Damn loafers doesn't obey your command. It keeps flipping and flopping. Even a pair of flip-flop remember to flip and flop, with both feet chasing footwear.... You mess up on the date or month or whatever. Its Microsoft! It happens. You would come out with flying butterflies! Good luck to you, Laura. :-)

A smart girl! Just imagine anyone could mix it up because the interview is scheduled well ahead of time and you are so excited. But then, when you are in a stupid situation like this you do not have any chance to explain to the employer you are not an idiot by email without making it even worse - you've already taken up too much of their attention with your mistimed reminders. Making this public with a potential that the employer will read and laugh is a smart move.
