When we love someone, we’re often willing to go above and beyond for them without thinking twice. We trust that if we ever needed the same in return, they’d be there for us too. Sadly, that doesn’t always turn out to be true.

One woman learned that the hard way after lending her boyfriend $25,000. She later discovered he was a con man and had no intention of paying her back. So she decided to make sure he wouldn’t get away with it, setting off a chain of events that eventually cost him more than half a million dollars.

Even though honesty is incredibly important in a relationship, plenty of people still admit to lying to their partner

It’s honestly pretty terrifying to think that the person you’re dating could turn out to be nothing like who they said they were. After all, you should be able to trust your partner and feel confident that what they tell you is true.

That said, lying in relationships happens more than some folks would probably like to admit. A YouGov survey found that 49% of people had lied to a significant other more than once.

And another survey by Superdrug Online Doctor suggests it may be even more common than that, with 73% of people who’d been in a relationship for at least a year saying they had lied to their partner.

Of course, there’s a pretty big difference between telling your partner you like their new haircut when you really don’t and lying about who you are. And what the woman in this story experienced was definitely the kind of betrayal that could turn your whole life upside down.

Her boyfriend had presented himself as a successful businessman with a huge house and flashy lifestyle. She later learned that his supposed phone marketing company was allegedly connected to fraud. On top of that, she caught him with another woman while she was still waiting for him to pay back the $25,000 she had lent him.

As shocking as all of that sounds, money is actually one of the things people often hide from their partners. In the same Superdrug survey, around 16% of both men and women said they had lied about debt. That’s a pretty serious secret to keep when it can have real consequences for both of you.

But even smaller lies can start to cause problems when they keep piling up. Verywell Mind notes that repeated dishonesty can slowly chip away at trust, making it harder to believe your partner later on. It can also snowball, since one lie sometimes creates another thing that needs covering up.

So, is lying something you should ever forgive? That really depends on what happened and how much damage it caused. According to Verywell Mind, forgiving a small lie is very different from trying to move past a major betrayal, especially if dishonesty has become a pattern.

There’s also no single point where everyone has to draw the line. Some people may be able to rebuild trust after a partner owns up to what they did, while others may decide the damage is simply too much. Forgiving someone also doesn’t mean pretending the lie was okay or acting as if nothing happened.

What the woman in this story discovered certainly wasn’t easy to brush off. Her boyfriend had taken a huge sum of money from her and had no intention of giving it back. Instead of simply letting him walk away with it, she reported what she had found and later took him to court.

From there, things escalated far beyond the original $25,000. His accounts were eventually frozen, he lost his house, and she says the whole fallout ended up costing him more than half a million dollars.

Do you think that was an appropriate way to handle what he did, or did she take the revenge too far? Share your thoughts below.

Readers had plenty of different opinions on the story, but many were impressed by just how much she managed to pull off

I would warn the authorities about his new job as concierge at his parents’ apartment complex, especially if there are a number of old folks living there—-this particular conman’s favorite victim demographic.
