Family can come with a lot of expectations, especially when a new baby enters the picture. New parents may assume some people should visit more or make more time to help with the baby, even when they already have lives and responsibilities of their own.

This woman shared that these expectations started to feel like too much after her stepsister had a baby. She made a real effort to be involved, but after finally taking a long-awaited break to travel and then returning to work, she found herself being guilt-tripped for not being around enough. Read on to see how a disagreement over a birthday gift turned the whole situation into a much bigger family fight.

Family entitlement can grow when everyone has a different idea of what being there for each other means

When it comes to family, it can be easy to assume that everyone should always be there for each other. The closer the relationship seems, the easier it becomes for requests for help, visits, or time together to feel like obligations, no matter the inconvenience.

These expectations can get tricky when the family relationship isn’t straightforward. In blended families, people may not share the same level of closeness or have the same idea of what their roles should look like. The American Academy of Pediatrics says these relationships take time to develop, and each family member finds their own place over time.

Because of this, family members may see their relationships very differently. Research in the Journal of Marriage and Family describes stepfamily roles and expectations as potentially ambiguous, which can leave people with different ideas about how they should relate and what they should do for one another.

This means one person may see a relationship as close and naturally expect regular involvement, while another may be perfectly comfortable with less contact. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, stepsiblings should not be expected to spend all their time together, because each relationship within a blended family develops differently.

For the poster, that gap in expectations became clear after her stepsister had a baby. The two had never lived together and had always had a fairly distant relationship, but she started making more of an effort after her niece was born. Even so, it didn’t take long for her to realize that she and her stepsister had very different ideas about how involved she was supposed to be.

Setting boundaries with family can get harder when they expect you to keep putting their needs before your own

Family expectations can become a problem when they start leaving one person with little room to make choices for themselves. Mayo Clinic notes that healthy boundaries help people protect their time, energy, and responsibilities, and that saying no to something outside those boundaries is part of maintaining them. That matters even with family, where a simple no can come with a hefty dose of guilt.

It can be harder when someone has already spent a lot of time helping. The more often a person says yes, the easier it can become for others to see that help as something they can count on. In this case, the woman had already made a real effort to be there for her stepsister and niece, so being told she still was not doing enough made her question where the boundary line was supposed to be.

Family guilt can make boundaries difficult to uphold. Mental Health America explains that family members can have very different ideas about what they owe each other, and guilt can pressure people to go along with expectations that leave them stressed or uncomfortable. This is to say that feeling guilty about saying no does not automatically mean you are doing something wrong.

For the narrator, that means learning that being a good sister and aunt could still have limits. She could care about her niece, help when she genuinely had the time, and still have a career, travel plans, and a life of her own. Her stepsister may have wanted more, but wanting more didn’t automatically make it her responsibility to give it.

Family can get complicated when two people have very different ideas about what it means to be there for each other. She felt she was doing what she could while her stepsister expected more. Was she right to prioritize her own life, or should she have made more time for her niece? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Sounds like it's time to step away from that relationship. Clearly the stepsister is unsatisfied, so why bother making any efforts. This person is not your actual sister and her kid is no relationship to you.
