Spotify Reveals Its Users’ Most Embarrassing Listening Habits On Giant Billboards

Did you use Spotify to play “Sorry” 42 times on Valentine’s day this year? Were you one of the 3,749 people who streamed “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” on the day of the Brexit vote? Maybe you made a playlist called “One Night Stand with Jeb Bush like He’s a Bond Girl in a European Casino”? Well if you answered “yes” to any of the above then congratulations, because Spotify has decided to use you as part of their brilliant new advert campaign.

The digital music service has put up a bunch of billboards across the US, UK, France and Germany revealing some of the weird and wonderful habits of its users. The advert was created by the company’s in-house marketing team and sports the tagline “Thanks 2016. It’s been weird.” Given everything that’s happened this year, we couldn’t agree more. Bring on 2017! Or not.

The billboards are funny. Their message is scary, though: whatever you do nowadays, it will be recorded. And yes, these things will eventually be identifyable down to a single person. Listening to a punk rock band will make your health insurance premiums rise? Probably only a matter of time...

No one forces you to use spotify or a scrobbling service.

I agree. Maybe they don’t have the exact name of the user but the users IP and general location, but that still makes it unnerving. And an up vote for you. :)

spotify, if you are reading this, you just are saying to your customers that their privacy wont be respected anymore, do you think that people will be happy using a service like this?

I hope that rather that poking fun at their users as commented, what they have done is be inspired by the use of their system and it gave them the inspiration for the billboards. Sitting around in a meeting like this, and remembering being a teen and listening to a song on repeat when your hearts breaking, is not a far leap, so then pretending there was that guy...I am guessing that on valentines day there would be a lot more of that. I personally always start humming Christmas songs mid year, its a strange habit, and I was only talking about it to someone yesterday. I am in the wrong country for cold Christmas, so I think my mind thinks temp drops it should be that time. I think they are just fun, and remind us that we are all a little quirky, and spotify lets us be the guy that lets his girlfriend use his log in and play her favourite music when she visits him at Uni - because that must be how that "girls night' playlist billboard came about, right ?
