Nike Is Releasing A Hijab Line That Muslim Athletes Helped To Create

Recently we brought you news of Nike’s new plus-size clothing line. Well, now the famous sports brand is rolling out the next phase of its inclusive clothing range by creating this smart line of sports hijabs for female Muslim athletes. The range is called the “Nike Pro Hijab,” and the garments are made from durable single-layer Nike Pro power mesh. The Nike hijabs are the result of about a year of work, and the design phase included feedback from both professional and everyday hijab-wearing athletes.

“The Nike Pro Hijab may have been more than a year in the making, but its impetus can be traced much further back. It’s an ongoing cultural shift that has seen more Muslim women than ever embracing sport,” said Nike in a statement, according to Al Arabiya English. “This movement first permeated international consciousness in 2012, when a hijabi runner took the global stage in London,” referring to Sarah Attar, a Saudi Arabian athlete who ran the 800-meters at the UK’s 2012 Olympics. The hijab fashion line was also inspired by Amna Al Haddad, an Emirati female weightlifter who visited Nike’s Sport Research Lab and helped them to come up with a lightweight and breathable solution to the traditional version of the hijab style.

The modest fashion product was designed “as a direct result of our athletes telling us they needed this product to perform better,” said Global Nike Spokeswoman Megan Saalfeld, “and we hope that it will help Muslim religion athletes around the world do just that.”

The hijabs, which will come in dark, neutral colors, is expected to hit stores as soon as Spring 2018. (h/t: Al Arabiya English)

Nike has just created a smart range of sports hijabs for female Muslim athletes

The Nike Pro Hijabs are made from durable single-layer Nike Pro power mesh and will be released in Spring 2018

Nike worked on the design in collaboration with both professional and everyday hijab-wearing athletes

It “was designed as a…result of our athletes telling us they needed this product to perform better,” said Nike

“And we hope that it will help athletes around the world do just that”

The internet’s response was generally very positive

Not everybody was sold on Nike’s new idea however

The Quran clearly states that women are evil and must cover their bodies lest they incite pious men to lust. Quran (24:31) - "And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known." The woman is not only supposed to cover herself, except with relatives, but to look down, so as to avoid making eye-contact with men.

Please stop thinking that the hijab is a symbol of oppression... you will be surprised to see just how many women out there chose to cover themselves up. The hijab is a form of freedom for Muslim women to express their faith to the world, don't get stuck in that stereotypical mindset that women are still forced to wear the hijabs by their husband! Get on the other side of the world and talk to these people for yourselves before thinking otherwise.

The argument here seems to be that only oppressed women wear hijabs, so shame on Nike for furthering the oppression, but if the woman who wants to compete is from such an oppressed nation, at least this gives her some freedom to compete. If she is not from such oppression and chooses to wear a hijab of her own free will, then Nike has done a good thing in offering her a choice. Either way, Nike's choice to offer this article of clothing seems like a positive one to me.

Ok!Time to say something:here I see most people are saying hijab is an oppression. First of all the philosophy of observing hijab according to Islam is this:God is beautiful himself so all of his creations are beautiful too,but he gave women extra beauty.physically and mentally. So Islam says it's better for women to observe hijab in the society so that they be judged by their spiritual, rather than physical characteristics.so if a woman CHOOSES to be a muslim let's just respect her choice. if she didn't and she was forced to observe hijab by her country, yes that could be a bit oppressive. But still it doesn't make what nike has done a confirmation of women oppression.

I am dissapointed with the racism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia in the comments. Get out of here! You racists are not allowed! How come you respect LGBTQ+ rights and black rights but not Islamic rights!? Get a mind! Go get one, even though I doubt you will even be able to understand the building's words "GROCERY STORE". If you don't accept that everyone's allowed in this world, I won't accept you!

What's with the racism in the comments? Women were given MANY rights that ancestors of Christians from the past didn't. They were allowed to marry who they wanted to, inherit land, get a job and education, and just all-round live better than racists with stinky minds and stinky lives.

Religious freedom, America has lived with it for 200+ years, now we're claiming that a woman should leave her oppressive religion because she has to wear a Hijab! What about the Amish and the Menonites, their women are even more oppressed, however, they seem ok with it.

To all saying that wearing a hijab is oppression-please read. Oppression is denying rights to someone because of their race, gender, religion, or sexuality. Some "muslim" groups are oppressive, when it comes to the hijab, and they force women to cover up excessively. (I put muslim in quotes b/c those who kill for their religion do not fit under the label of islam, which is a religion of peace.) But a women choosing to wear a hijab or dress in a heavily modest way is just as much her choice, just as wearing booty shorts or a bikini is her choice. Can you not see the happy words of muslim women who want to stay active and be a bit more comfortable while doing so? Of course, there will always be disagreement on things like this, but there will be disagreement over everything, be it dessert or major social issues. Your opinion is valid. I cannot force you to change your opinion. But I can urge you to rethink it, which was the point of that paragraph.

1. For Nike, it's all about the money, they don't care about anything else. Thanks (not), World Company! ) 2. Instead of focusing only on the veil, hijab, headscarf or whatever you call it, I'd like people to see all that's expected of women in addition to wearing the hijab, as proof of a good behaviour. You'd see that the hijab in itself is a kind of an anecdotic restriction compared to all the others that are linked to it. Also, a number of conditions are required to make a real free choice. Coercition is not the only way to make someone do someting, there are thousands of more subtler and more efficient ways. Sadly, the right to alienate oneself is inalienable. That said, disapproving the hijab is not an excuse to discriminate women wearing it.

Why so many try to look pseudo-intellectuals on these topics nowadays? "It is not oppression if i choose to wear it.... Are you serious? 99% of these comments are probably from people which are not even Muslin... as so, your comments have 0 value. The fact is: In some countries by law, you have to use it..so no option...And in the countries where you don't have a law for it, the family and Muslin society pressure is so big, that you will use it nonetheless...Stop with this pseudo-liberalism, where you defend the opposite of that philosophy ... and yes eventually a certain % might enjoy it, but far from being the majority (Or they simply got used to that..)

I don't care about Nike, sport or religion. It just makes me sad to look at covered heads and necks in general. I think they are simply ugly. Flat oily hair underneath, lots of perspiration, impression of baldness, old look. I hate seeing old ladies in veils as well as young women in hijabs. Whatever reason you have for wearing veils, I don't care, I hate them. So I'm not impressed with Nike's commercial idea.

If it helps some woman to do sport while having/choosing to wear a hijab that's good news...but is the function of the hijab not to avoid the sights of other people (especially men)? in that case, why put a logo on it?

The function of the hijab is to cover the hair an neck only, the burqua has the function to hide the whole body

This is awesome. I am Muslim, and if you think the hijab is oppressing, I think you are just jealous about how Nike isn't making hats tiny enough to fit your tiny heads.

I know I am repeating what others have said, but the hijab is NOT a symbol of oppression. Before judging another culture, please take a moment to educate yourself.

Read in the episode: McDonalds now offers courses in halal-slaughtering. Yippie. What a religion that opresses man, woman as well as animals in such horrible ways.

This is Planet Earth, not NIke's. Whatever... If some women want to cover themselves, well... "Let them have hijab". I couldn't care less. Good for the ones who don't. Today is the International Day of Women. I'm glad I'm free. Freedom is priceless.

go f**k yourselves. we don't need rich country people always trying to play the compassionate-agressive who dictates how other people should live. american and european are oppressed by fashion telling them they must be half-naked all the time.

I love how all these non-Muslims are spouting their opinions on hijabs. The quote from the Quran is particularly rich. It's as if christians haven't even read their own bibles. Leave Muslim women alone

why is it soooo difficult to accept the simple fact that women ARE capable of understanding by themselves that the HIJAB is a better option for them in particular. do monkey-brained european and north-american people think that women are just so stupid that they can only obey what they are told to do in a "man-dominated society"?

I love how the article says that the internet reaction was so good a everyone loves the new Nike woman muslim head rag, but almost whole discussion under article is full of contempt - imho absolutely justified. Not to mention that they post this on Woman internation day, really disgusting. Screw you, both Nike and Bored Panda.
